Kickstarter - A New Way To Fund Ideas and Endeavors
2009-11-12 14:00:00
There’s a common theme that seems to apply to more than one conversation we’re having around the office of late: community funded projects. You’ll be hearing quite a bit about this from us in the coming weeks.* Right now though, I thought I’d share a recent discovery, Kickstarter. I love the way they introduce themselves: We believe ...
Narayan Murthy Turns VC – Sells Infy Stock To Launch VC Fund
2009-10-23 07:41:00
We reported how the VC investments in India had nose dived in the last quarter and though it was slightly better on quarter on quarter growth no of VC invetsments were dismal. If one went deeper they were very dismal in seed and early stage investments. Well now all that might improve for sure as one of India’s leading icons of IT Services industry Mr.Narayan Murthy has just sold stocks he held in Infosys to launch a VC fund. Murthy has offloaded 800,000 shares from his personal holding, to raise about Rs 177 crore. This offloading led to a decrease in Murthy’s holding in Infosys from 0.41 per cent from 0.55 per cent. Though overall Murthy and his family still own about 4.83 per cent valued close to Rs 6,200 crore. What kind of companies will this fund invest in? The Fund will invest in young entrepreneurs and would be focused on India. No specific vertical has been specified yet. Great news for Tech entrepreneurs? Given Mr.Murthy’s tech background and also his or...

You Need To Start An Emergency Fund...TODAY!
2009-09-21 16:14:00
Major expenses have a way of coming along when you least expect them. A leaky roof. A sudden illness. A furlough or job loss. Such events can leave you scrambling for cash at a moment's notice. That's why you need to have an adequate emergency fund?an account apart from your regular savings that you can reach quickly when you need to. Having a "rainy day" account will save you from having to dip into your retirement savings and other long-range investments, or taking on high-interest debt.A common rule of thumb is to set aside enough for three to six months worth of living expenses. However, given today's uncertain economy and job market, you may want to stash away even more.So how do you figure the amount you'll need to stock away?First, add up your fixed monthly expenses?the ones that don't change from month to month. Include your mortgage and/or rent payments, insurance premiums, and property taxes. Then add in the average monthly amount of your variable expenses, including g...

Indonesia Fund (IF): 'Hidden gem'
2009-08-28 13:00:00
"Indonesia, a long time favorite, is often overlooked by even savvy global investors," says Carl Delfeld. In Chartwell ETF Advisor he calls Indonesia Fund (NYSE: IF) a "hidden gem.""This year, Indonesia is one of the best performers in the world with a growth rate just a bit behind China. Other attributes are its rich natural resources, less reliance on exports relative to its neighbors, and its growing consumer class which fuels 65% of GDP."Other positives are its appreciating currency and strong banks. Jakarta’s banks are among Asia’s best-capitalized banks. Then there is political stability."Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, re-elected last month as Indonesia’s president, expects faster growth next year and a narrowing of the country’s budget deficit alongside a likely increase in inflation."Indonesia has been less affected by the global slowdown than many thanks to relatively sturdy domestic consumption, due in pa...
Fund scandal clips North Shore
2009-08-25 16:16:00
When the economic tide goes out, all sorts of nasty stuff washes up on shore, and lots of boats get stuck in the mud. Accounting fraud, executive looting and investment scams are easy to get away with when everybody's making money. But when the music stops, things get ugly. So it goes in this tale of a former Continental Bank executive and Winnnetka resident who's accused by the feds and a bunch of rich Chicagoans (among others) of defrauding the investors in his $500 million hedge fund....

2009-08-02 14:17:00
Yeah, you’re reading right, John Chow has just sold his blog to Fund a Whales Association close to his heart! I cannot believe what has just happened…I feel like crying right now! Well to be honest I’m not 100% sure but that’s what I was told on DigitalPoint? – then I thought I’d better get an ad deal because the hype will be to good to miss..right? I was just on MSN to John Chow trying to sort out an Advertising Deal and his deals are not cheap by the way. $500 for 125 advert is a lot but the traffic he gets which is mostly targeted to people wanting to make a living online is a fair price I guess…anyway I was going backwards and forwards with him saying do me a yearly deal. This would have been a cool $6k per year which I think I was willing to pay but oh no John Chow the man offered me a deal…he said if you can rank higher than me for the term John Chow in Google US I will let you have the advertising spot for NOTHING for the who...

City To Plunder Parking Meter Rainy Day Fund
2009-06-27 05:24:00
No one could see this coming. Can you see the look of abject surprise on my face? Don't confuse this look with either boredom or sleepiness or apathy. I always look this way when something shocks me like when the Daley Administration says they have to dip into the $320 million, rainy day fund established when the city got their $1.15 billion for leasing the parking meters. Can you believe it? The city can't balance the budget. There's a budget shortfall. Wow. I've been jolted into a coma. Clout Street has all the details from Friday afternoon....

China Fund (CHN): Assessing China from within
2009-05-14 06:00:00
"The Greater China region covers an area which encompasses Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau and is home to over 4,100 companies," says Nick Lanyi. In his High Yield International, he suggests, "Research in this part of the world can be difficult for U.S. investors (who don't even speak Mandarin) to separate the good from the bad. That's where The China Fund (NYSE: CHN) comes in.""Chris Ruffle and his team at Martin Currie, a Shanghai-based investment firm, have a dozen dedicated China analysts that comb the country's 32 provinces for investment ideas."In fact, management conducts over 1,000 company visits each year and won't invest a single penny without personally checking out an operation first-hand."The managers at the China Fund avoid inefficient, state-owned enterprises and place special emphasis on smaller entrepreneurial companies with promising growth trajectories. So the portfolio is full of future stars."But you'll...
Best bond fund bets
2009-04-24 06:00:00
"We see some opportunity in investment-grade bonds as well as in junk bond," says Nilus Mattive, who adds, "In his Dividend Superstars, he looks at two income funds from Vanguard."The concern about investment grade bonds -- debt carrying ratings of BBB or higher from S&P and Baa or higher from Moody’s -- is that an all-out Armageddon scenario will punish all companies, even the very strongest. "With some forecasts calling for more defaults in 2009 than we saw during the height of the Great Depression, I can see why! "At the same time, when I survey the landscape, I see some decent risk-reward scenarios. For example, I am an unabashed fan of Vanguard’s low-cost funds, and when I look at the Vanguard Intermediate-Term Investment Grade Bond Fund (VFICX), I am intrigued. "At the end of February, 22.6% of the fund’s holdings held the highest rating of Aaa! Another 50% had at least one ‘A’ in their rating. &quo...

Fund expert seeks high yields with less risk
2009-04-01 15:00:00
"Given recent disdain for risk, high-yield corporate bonds trade at considerable discounts to their par values and offer sizeable yields," explains fund expert Mark Salzinger. In his The No-Load Fund Investor, he looks at two relatively conservative income choices: Fidelity Floating Rate High Income (FFRHX) and Fidelity Strategic Income (FSICX)."We have taken this as an opportunity to add high-yield bond exposure to many of our model portfolios, believing that the generous yields now compensate for the extra risk."Fidelity offers two bond-fund offerings that are less risky than pure high-yield funds yet still offer significant yield spreads over investment-grade bond funds, especially Treasury funds. "So, to decrease your risk at the cost of modestly lower income and total-return potential, consider one of the funds discussed below."Fidelity Floating Rate High Income invests in senior secured loans issued by banks usually to below-investment-grade c...

The Venture Capital Fund Structure
2009-02-19 23:55:00
Private Equity funds (including Venture Capital funds) are largely structured under a “2 and 20″ business model. This will run through a quick example about how it works from the Limited Parter and General Partner perspective. Limited Partner (LP): Invest money in the fund and include: pensions, investment managers, high-net worth individuals, etc. General Parter (GP): Select companies for investment and manage the portfolio until exit is realized (IPO, strategic sale, recapitalization) The 2/20 model says that the GPs receive a 2% management fee on committed capital (in this case, $100m) and 20% of any realized capital gains. The LPs, on the other hand, invest $100m into the fund and receive their initial investment plus 80% of the gains. These percentages can change, but they are fairly standard in the industry. The management fee is used to keep the lights on and pay salaries (supposedly) and the “carry” or 20% gains is the profit share. Now, in our exa...

You Need to Know Your Mutual Fund
2009-02-10 19:11:00
There are some basic things you should know about mutual funds in general and about the specific fund in which you are about to invest. Mutual funds with a bad track record are dissolved. The fund assets are absorbed by another fund and the fund manager is given a new fund to manage. Also, an average fund manager has limited experience.A mutual fund company does not want to keep a poorly performing fund in its fund family for very long. A poor performer brings down the average performance of its funds. Also, when the financial media makes comparisons between funds in the same fund category, new assets go to the best performer rather than to one near the bottom of the list. For example, if you were looking at the relative performance of 50 large-cap growth funds, and saw that fund ABC returned an average of 19% a year for the last 5 years and that fund XYZ had lost 2% a year over the same period, where would you invest your money? The company that owns XYZ would not be blind to the f...

"As we head into 2009’s turbulent waters, it will take two oars to keep a straight course; as such, for my top pick for 2009, I am selecting a pair of ETFs," notes fund expert Jim Lowell (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2687).In- his Marketwatch ETF Trader (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2687), the advisor explains, "iShares Dow Jones U.S. Total Market (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=iyy) (ASE: IYY (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=iyy)) covers the market broadly, while WisdomTree International Small Cap Dividend Fund (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=dls) (NYSE: DLS (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=dls)) has a more focused manner.""Buying the broader market in 2008 was a sucker’s bet; make that a sucker punch. Let’s Save the Lawton Chiles Endowment Fund
2009-01-06 18:53:00
The Florida Legislature got together in Tallahassee yesterday to address the state’s budget crisis. Some state leaders have suggested we tap into the Lawton Chiles Endowment Fund in order to balance the budget. Ummm. No. Remember back when Florida settled with the tobacco companies? The state used some of the proceeds to create the Lawton Chiles Endowment Fund and for ten years now this fund has provided critical funding to help our children and the elderly. Last year, lawmakers gave Governor Crist the ability to use $354 million and now the Governor is thinking about taking $600 million from the fund. Again. Ummm. No. Thanks to the brilliance of Wall Street, the fund has lost nearly half of its value and the state would have to sell securities at dramatic losses in order to get its hands on the fund’s principal. The fund would never recover from such a loss. It’s no secret that our governor and many legislators don’t care about the children and elderly who h...
