A Fundamentalist Self-Critique
2009-08-24 05:11:00
The last few years have seen the world wide web do a number on fundamentalism.  I speak particularly of the independent fundamental Baptist (IFB) movement, and the influence of blogs like Sharper Iron (SI). Jason Janz, SI’s founder, published his young fundamentalist survey, and soon thereafter Phil Johnson (of Pyromaniac fame), delivered his speech “Dead Right: ...

The pro-Sai activist and most active front man for Sathya Sai Baba on the Internet, Gerald Joe Moreno, bashes critics of Sathya Sai Baba as fundamentalist Christians and/or anti-Semites. He does it because he has the proved agenda of trying to find devious ways to assassinate their characters, not because there is any truth whatever ...

Pastor Steve Anderson is the embodiment of almost everything extreme about independent fundamental Baptists.  It seems he enjoys posting his often abrasive and extreme preaching as a series of video clips on Youtube. I’ve posted a jaw-dropping clip of his before, and this one almost tops that.  In it he defends the notion that Jesus actually ...
A Fundamentalist Christian Looks at Fundamentalist Islam!
2008-12-28 19:13:00
-By Don Boys, Ph.D. Have American Christians misread or misinterpreted historic Islam? I am afraid many have, and as a Bible-believing Christian concerned with the truth, I want to challenge their thinking. Many believe that all Muslims are uneducated fanatics; however, many Muslim clerics are highly educated, urbane, and politically informed. Another false conception is that all Muslims ...

2008-10-06 16:43:00
I have to admit that I was a little leery about this book, as a result it sat on the bottom of my pile. Problem was, eventually the pile dwindled, and only Stories Of A Recovering Fundamentalist remained. I was worried, having just moved into the very apex of the Bible Belt, I am sure ...

Check out a hilarious thread at Sharper Iron: “You might be a fundamentalist if…” (HT: Paleoevangelical). Some of the responses are downright funny. And as one who grew up in fundamentalism, some come too close to home. Mostly this thread has fundamentalists picking on their own quirks and oddities. Enjoy. ...

Excuse me, sir, but may I be of assistance? Ah, I see I have alarmed you. Do not be frightened by my beard: I am a lover of America. Thus starts the monologue of "Changez", the principle character in "The Reluctant Fundamentalist" by Mohsin Hamid.Seated at dusk at a Lahore cafe, Changez tells his story to a stranger, an American. A story of a Pakistani who studied in the US, found work in a prestigious company, met a girl and became singled out after 9/11. Gradually he starts question his path of life and how different he was from the people around him, in a Western country. The story is told with a light, almost frivolous, sometimes ironical English, jumping between the subjects of love, culture, religion, prejudices and the war on terror. Despite the weight of the topics, the story remains so light it almost starts to resonate with irony or sarcasm without giving away any hint of the faith both Changez and his American acquaintance will face towards the end of the book.Very well wri...

Warren Jeffs' Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints 4

Warren Jeffs even turns into blacks as unworthy and filthy individuals. He had breed a religion that promotes belief that seems to be non-existent in the modern world. This video shows a short clip of what he said...Here is a video of Carolyn Jessop - Escaping from the FLDSNow we continue with the story behind this religious sect sourced from GMA News...It came in late March, when a 16-year-old girl reportedly called a local domestic abuse hot line to report that a 49-year-old man had married her, impregnated her at 15, and beaten and choked her repeatedly, according to court documents. In one of several phone calls to the hot line, the girl said her husband had broken her ribs. But church members had warned her to not to flee — otherwise she would be found and locked in a room, according to an affidavit signed by an investigator for the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. On April 3, hundreds of agents — a SWAT team, FBI agents, Texas Rangers, San Angelo police,...
Warren Jeffs' Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints 3
2008-04-23 04:00:00
Although the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is not the only religion which has plural marriages because other religions like Islam also practices this but the thing is they have really gone overboard on this. Marriages with fathers and daughter was really outrageous and horrfying. How could someone even think about that. This church and the founder of this church should really be penalized. They are even giving damage to the original teachings of the Mormon Church. Now we continue with the story behind this religious sect sourced from GMA News...As the months passed without incident, the townspeople's' fear of the group morphed first into a generalized disgust of the sect's polygamous practices, then a morbid curiosity with the now-finished, gleaming white temple (which had 4-foot-thick outer walls of poured concrete), and its priesthood rites, marriage ceremonies and secretive ordinations. When Jeffs, the self-styled prophet, predicted Armageddon in 2...
Warren Jeffs' Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints 2
2008-04-22 04:00:00
Religion is said to be fundamental in man's existence. It is said that it gives him a sense of purpose. But what if that religion and sense of purpose is distorted by someone. In the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints which is one of the largest Mormon fundamentalist denominations and one of America's largest practitioners of plural marriages this had been the case. The FLDS Church teaches the doctrine of plural marriage, which states that a man having multiple wives is ordained by God and is a requirement for a man to receive the highest form of salvation. It is generally believed in the church that a man should have a minimum of three wives to fulfill this requirement. Connected with this doctrine is the concept that wives are required to be subordinate to their husbands. The church currently practices the law of placing, whereby a young woman of marriageable age is assigned a husband by revelation from God to the leader of the church, who is regarded as...
Warren Jeffs' Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints 1

I decided to divide this posting in order to properly expose and show the story of this religious cult who preached polygamy and many acts which are fundamentalism at its higher level. It is a religion so fundamentalist that you will never believe that someone like this could exist.Below is an audio-video of Warren Jeffs teachings of celestial laws of polygamy offered to young female students. This is #7 of the same audio tape in sequence, from a Home Economics class from 1997, of Warren Jeffs voice. The Mormon fundamentalist polygamist sect was founded by Warren Steed Jeffs (born December 3, 1955, in San Francisco, California) known as the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS Church) from 2002 to 2007. Jeffs' position in this organization was reportedly that of absolute ruler. Here is another video of him explaining polygamy...Now here is a background story sourced from GMA News...ELDORADO, Texas - The guy didn't look much like a hunter. He was beanpole...

From the corner. If you're single and happen to be in a swinging part of an Arab state, some of the words here can be very useful. ...when we meet the black-eyed virgin with her black hair and white face – praised be He who created night and day. What hair! What a chest! What a mouth! What cheeks! What a figure! What breasts! What thighs! What legs! What whiteness! What softness! Without any creams – no Nivea, no vaseline. No nothing! … how soft will a black-eyed virgin be, when she comes to you so tall and with her beautiful face, her black hair and white face - praised be He who created night and day. … There is no god but Allah. He told us that if you entered one of the palaces, you would find ten black-eyed virgins sprawled on musk cushions. … When they see you, they will get up and run to you. Lucky is the one who gets to put her thumb in your hand. When they get hold of you, they will push you onto your back, on the musk cushions. They will pus...

More than 180 youth and children removed from Texas fundamentalist compound
2008-04-06 02:20:00
Officials from Texas Child Protective Services (CPS) removed a total of 183 young women, girls and boys from the Fundamentalist LDS Church’s compound near Eldorado, TX. According to Marleigh Meisner, spokesperson for CPS, told reporters they had removed 97 girls, 40 boys and 46 young women over the age of 18 from YFZ Ranch. Eighteen of the girls removed from the compound were put legally into state custody because they appear to be “under threat of physical, mental or sexual abuse, or of neglect.” The remaining children have been taken to a local civic center for questioning and until authorities have found them foster homes. The Eldorado Success reported that the investigation began after Child Protective Services was notified by a 16-year-old girl at the YFZ Ranch who suffered physical abuse at the hands of 50-year-old Dale Barlow. Police set up roadblocks and blocked off the entrances and exits to the compound. According to the San Angelo Standard-Times, a searc...

I know the title of this particular angry rant may frighten some people but understand that it is here I will list my qualifications to set minds at ease and then I will attack mercilessly, pre-emptively and without apology. I warn you now if your sensitive feelings can't handle the truth then just fuckin' blow me.First, I was raised for most of my life here in this small town nestled in the emo buckle of the bible belt.Second, I attended a Catholic church as a child, went through catechism and underwent confirmation.Third, during said catechism classes I was subjected to the most mindless mounds of bullshit crammed down my throat. (I just didn't realize it was bullshit until later...more on that coming up)Fourth, I later became a Baptist and had the same mounds of bullshit crammed down my throat only this time...it was a force-feeding.Fifth, I've been to an apostolic church (whether I wanted to go or not...the latter obviously being the case)Sixth, I've been on one helluva spi...

Islam fundamentalists don't crash into buildings...

the US government does. At least, that's the story according to Alex Jones. Jones is the owner/author of the "controversial" website Prison Planet. Basically what he's saying is that the collapse of the Twin Towers was not and structurally could not have been the result of planes crashing into the buildings. The actual cause of the collapsing towers was the detonation of strategically placed bombs within the building. You can read more on the story here.
Fundamentalist Christians Defame Military Dead
2007-10-25 23:29:00

Last year at the funeral of Matthew Snyder these tormented souls who bring their ...
Organ donation: what do the fundamentalists say?
2007-10-09 16:34:00
Is organ donation a ‘Christian Duty?’ The Anglican church in England thinks so. Body parts should not be mistaken for the person themselves, and the best way to treat them reverently is to use them to heal others, said the Church which would welcome the creation of a European donor pool. “Giving oneself and one’s possessions voluntarily ...

Can There Really Be OC/IC Fundamentalists? Oh, and A Pretty Cool Vid
2007-07-31 17:53:00
I'm nearly finished reading Malise Ruthven's Fundamentalism: The Search for Meaning (ISBN 0192806068), in it he talks about "catholic" fundamentalism which, if one accepts traditional definistions of the term, is . . . well a contradiction of catholicism. Ruthven is looking at a broad spectrum to re-describe fundamentalism so that the term is more accurate. Reading his discussion on "catholic" fundamentalism or "integralism" (a new word to me - I always associated "catholic" fundamentalism with ultramontanism) I started thinking about some of the newer emerging OC/IC/ISM groups, that can easily be described as fundamentalist (sedevantists, the Charismatic Episcopal, and others) it dawned on me how antithetical the our OC/IC heritage "fundamentalism" is.Key to the fundamentalist view of the world, and theology is the rejection of the modern (though not always in ways we might expect) "modernism" "liberalism" the ideas inherent in them that were the back bone of the foundation of th...

We won’t allow this," said Abdul Rashid Ghazi, the administrator of the Lal Masjid. However, he would not object to the movie if clerics approved it.The film in question is Khuda Kay Liye (For God’s sake) and revolves around the growing conflict between fundamentalists and liberal Muslims post 9/11.

News & Current Events :: Scientific Fundamentalists
2007-06-25 14:09:00
Author: Eric Subject: Scientific FundamentalistsPosted: Mon Jun 25, 2007 8:09 am (GMT -4) Scientific Fundamentalists SHMULEY BOTEACH I participated in two debates this week, and between them learned a great deal about the nature of science and religion in our time. The first debate, on the subject of religion, was with Richard Dawkins, the famous evolutionary biologist and atheist, in Toronto. The second, in New York, was with a leading Jewish-Christian missionary on whether Jesus died for our sins. What startled me was how, in the religion debate, although my adversary and I challenged each other's most sacredly held beliefs, there was no offense taken on either side. Less so was there any acrimony directed toward me from the approximately 1000 Christians who were in the audience. Religious people are by now so used to having their faith challenged that being on the defensive is no big deal. Not so science, which has enjoyed hegemony for so long that it has become its...

The Philosopher vs. the Biblical Fundamentalist (Round Two)
2007-05-27 11:28:00
John F. Hobbins, from over at Ancient Hebrew Poetry, has written a response to my post, The Philosopher vs. the Biblical Fundamentalist. In my initial response to Hobbins I claimed that although (or perhaps because) he is a Methodist minister, his position is not a Biblical Fundamentalist one. I believe the reasons for my original assertion will become clear by the end of this post. More significantly, I will argue that even taken on its own terms, Hobbins' position has troubling implications, not only for Biblical Fundamentalism, but for any authoritative view of Christian scripture. Before delving into my reply to Hobbins, I want to quickly address Matt Nehls' reply to my anti-Fundamentalist argument. Both Hobbins and Nehls agree that the locution, “the Son of Man coming in the clouds”, actually refers to Israel’s apocalyptic victory over its enemies. Nehls posits that this interpretation hinges on the following claims:First, this passage is Matthew's redactional work...

Fundamentalist and Terrorist
2007-05-22 06:25:00
Why are most of Muslims fundamentalists and terrorists? We all know this question is often hurled at Muslims, either directly or indirectly in world affairs. Muslim stereotypes are perpetuated in every form of the media accompanied by gross misinformation about islam and Muslims. In fact, such discrimination and acts of violence against West media following the bomb blast, where the press was quick to declare a Muslim behind the attack.According to Zakir Naik's book (Common questions about Islam), a fundamentalist is a person who follows and adheres to the fundamentals of the doctrine or theory he is following (for a person to be a good scientist, he should know, follow and practice the fundamentals of science. He should be a fundamentalist in the field of science. But not all fundamentalists are the same. One cannot categorize all fundamentalists as either good or bad. Such a categorization of any fundamentalist will depend upon the field or activity in which he is a fundamentalis...
Book Review: 'The Reluctant Fundamentalist'
2007-05-20 14:04:00
Charles R. LarsonSpecial to the Middle East TimesMay 18, 2007  --  In an interview he gave with The Stanford Daily last month, Mohsin Hamid - author of the riveting new novel, The Reluctant Fundamentalist - stated boldly, "I am in love with America and deeply angry with it, sort of like Changez" [the main character of his novel]. Hamid explained of Changez: "He is always aware of certain benefits that America hands over to him, benefits that are part of the American corporate culture. At the same time the culture doesn't work for him. He becomes at once ashamed and proud of his background." It is difficult to see how any writer could have captured the conflicting - almost contradictory - feelings so many of us feel about America in these post-9/11 days. Capitalism stinks, yet I don't know of any better system. And democracy? Well, sadly in a democratic society, you get the person you elect. And in these troubled times, too many of us are looking for better leaders than ...
Young Fundamentalists and Old Fundamentalists and separation
2007-05-18 17:29:00
In a great essay on the current path of fundamentalists, the editor of Straightway magazine, Dr. H.T. Spence, makes this greatly enlightening statement : "Though Fundamentalism has endeavored to be strong historically in ecclesiastical separation, one of its great weaknesses from its beginning has been its lack of personal separation." This can be found in the June-July 2005 issue of the magazine in an article entitled "Ask for the Old Paths." This statement helped me make sense of the changes in many of the "camps" of fundamentalism. One who loves old fundamentalism can't help but notice the changes in which the children of the old movement are lowering standards of holiness or obviously copying the world in matters such as entertainment, music, dress standards and general devotion to worldly amusement. The justification for the changes in young fundamentalism is that it lends credibility to a movement that lacks it, and reaches people who are hurting, and needing the church. Becau...

The Philosopher vs. the Biblical Fundamentalist
2007-05-07 14:04:00
I realise that this post is a radical departure from the usual content of this blog, but I thought it would be fun to mix things up a little. Here, I will be presenting an argument against certain types of Biblical Fundamentalism—namely, those which hold to a literal interpretation of the Bible. The argument presented here was originally featured on one of my weblogs as a parody. But after receiving several email correspondences from Biblical Fundamentalists attempting to refute my argument (quite unsuccessfully in my opinion), I am beginning to suspect that I may actually be on to something. My argument, simply stated, is that if Biblical literalism is true (a claim many Biblical Fundamentalist subscribe to) then Biblical Fundamentalism must be false.Let us define Biblical literalism as the claim that the Bible should be interpreted at face value, unless otherwise clearly indicated. On this view, the creation of the world by God, the parting of the red sea by Moses, the resur...
