Daft Punk - Discovered. A Collection of Daft Funk Samples (Rapster Records,
2008-07-25 09:31:00
GRINGO FUNK
2008-07-01 23:26:00
This is actually a post to talk about the latest album from Flamin Hotz. PANCADÃO DO MORRO is an attempt to amend previous wrongs from the label, which was the Sou Funk EP that gave the world Baile Funk during a very dry spell. No need to dwell in the past, investigate further if you want, but their new project is helping the baile's of Sao Paolo. Im not going to post a track from the CD, but from one of the artists called Mc Gringo, who is German, living with wifey in the baile 'burbs. The Cd and Wax are available on Mad Recordings, and I am pretty sure he bites a common Funk riddem called Berimbao, which I first heard by Dj Sandrinho. So who's exploiting copyrights here??? I dont know, get it while you can. Mc Gringo - Birimbal (zshare) Mc Gringo - MyspaceMc Gringo - Mc Gringao (Inertia)This is the package for PANCADÃO DO MORRO. Fully loaded two booklet Carioca Funk. It features Mc Gringo, and a crew of tough Baile numbers.FLAMIN HOTZ - PANCADÃO DO MORROSpeaking of baile gringo...
Fighting the Funk - Taking A Long Walk
2008-06-10 02:43:00
OK, my “Fight the Funk” day is coming to a close. I'm not going to lie, I'm still in a bit of a funk. I started the day better then I'm ending it. I didn't make it to the gym, I wasn't up for a run, so I took a nice long walk alone with my headphones. It was great! AND much better then watching TV for that half hour (which would have made the funk a lot worse!) I realize my blog has turned into a self help outlet but boy did I need it. I'm taking 3 days off this week and heading to the beach with the toddler. I'm hoping a few days away will snap me out of the 'you know what'. I'm not going to even say it again. Tomorrow I plan on posting the question of the week and then I'll be signing off until the weekend. Hope you all had a funk-less Monday!
Fighting the Funk - Something Scary
2008-06-09 19:53:00
OK, This Fighting the Funk Series is EXACTLY what the doctor ordered. I am starting to feel fabulous again! I am really getting a renewed sense of motivation. I got an email from an online friend of mine that said... DO ONE THING THAT SCARES YOU EVERY DAY. I think Eleanor Roosevelt said it and it's genius (of course)! If I sit back and think about it, I do do things that scare me every day! Let's see.... I walked into Weight Watchers, started running, took a spinning class, tried mangosteen (have you seen that scary fruit), climbed the wall, write/wrote this blog, walked into the free weight room, quite my job, embarked on the cook book adventure, I really could go on and on. Some of these decisions scared the $hit out of me! But I did them! So when I read her email it clicked. I just need to scare myself today! What a GREAT idea! That'll pull me out of the funk! I've been considering redesigning WeightWatchen for sometime. I feel as though I'm growing out of it. The ser...
Fighting the Funk - Making Good FUN Food
2008-06-09 16:22:00
If I had to eat boring salads everyday or “diet” foods, I'd go nuts. One way I find motivation is by getting creative in the kitchen and turning my trigger/nemesis foods into healthy fun options. My choice today, pizza, of course! I love pizza, I mean I really LOVE it. It's the one food item I have the hardest time saying 'no' to and if I say 'yes', I have a hard time stopping. Lost on a desert island? It's my choice hands down. On death row, my request? York Style pizza with extra cheese. I think you get the point. Well today I decided on a cross between my Provolone Pita Pizzas and Tortilla Pizza. I used a large whole wheat pita, leftover sauce, short cuts chicken, diced colored peppers and 1oz fancy shredded cheese. It was crispy, cheesy, yummy pizza goodness! I'm starting to feel better, can you tell? Notice the water jug, it's going down!
Fighting the Funk - Solving the Water Problem
2008-06-09 13:28:00
A few days ago I wrote a post about how my water consumption has dropped since being home most of the day. To help solve the problem, and consequently help get me out of this funk that I've been in, I came up with the water pitcher idea. Take a nice sized pitcher, fill it with ice and water and keep it out in plain site. Sounds SO simple doesn't it? But, for me, this seems to be working. It allows me to instantaneously pour or refill my glass and seeing the pitcher reminds to drink the water in the first place. Stay tuned for other “Fight the Funk” posts today. I'll be looking for things to help inspire me today. P.S. Yes, yes, my pitcher is really a vase in disguise. I really like it and it's pretty, so why not? :~)
Fighting the Funk
2008-06-09 04:59:00
Let me start by saying, I don't know what's up with me. I really have had NO desire to write, journal, eat good, or even get out of bed for the last few days. I'm just NOT motivated. As everyone knows, especially those with kids, you just gotta deal but boy I've been kinda miserable. I just feel off and in a funk. That's about the only way I can describe it. Let's see, what's been going on? We had a little get together on Saturday for the toddlers 3rd birthday. For the food spread I stuck with mostly healthy options of Simple Homemade Hummus (I added some roasted red pepper – YUM), fresh cut veggies, cut up whole wheat pitas, baked tortillas, salsa, a cold cut platter with with whole wheat buns, and to wash it down, my healthy party punch! The hummus and punch were both big hits which made me SO happy, the only thing that competed with them was the chicken nugget platter I ordered from Chick-Fil-A. It really was the hit of the party! The toddler and I posted a ...

The Jam:The Larry Graham & Graham Central Station Anthology [2001][CD 1]The Jam:The Larry Graham & Graham Central Station Anthology [2001][CD 2]Graham Central Station, with Larry Graham on bass and Lady Chocolate doing some monster vocals was always one of the greats for pure funk music.Larry Graham, whose percussive and funky bass style(thumpin'-slappin'-pluckin-') was one of the main ingredientsto Sly's catchy lyrics, harmonic hooks and rhythmic flightsof the imagination!Larry took it upon himself to form one of the baddest, most influential and most underated bands of the 70's..."Graham Central Station!!" The best of all their albums from 1973-1980 is on here and in addition to Larry's innovative bass playing you also hear early forays into electronic instrumentation with the useof the "funk box", an early drum machine, as well as synthesizers and moog bass around the same time as people like Stevie Wonder,P-Funk and others were introducing them to black music. The gro...

Funk Brothers Honored for Their Accomplishments
2008-05-18 20:52:00
The Funk Brothers have been named this year's recipients of the Heroes and Legends Legacy Award, given out to artists who achieve timeless accomplishments of historical importance.Founder Janie Bradford said "The Funk Brothers carved a niche in music history by playing an integral part of the "Motown Sound." Over the years, even though the members continued to change, it seemed that each replacing "Funkster" constituently kept the same feeling and emotion in the music, thereby, keeping that unique, special packaged "Detroit Sound" alive and strong. Now as well known all over the world as the artist that they played behind, Eddie Willis, Uriel Jones and Bob Babbitt are all still riding the wave of "fame" from the identify of that special sound created in the late 50's throughout the 60's. Amazing."The award will be presented at the 19th Annual HAL Awards and Scholarship Dinner, which will be held on September 28th at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The Heroes And Legends Scholarship Fou...

A little life lesson before the tune today... being stoned is not conducive to keeping secrets...It's been a while since I've posted some proper African Funk, and that, as they, ain't right! So let's fix that with a jammy by Nigerian sax man Peter King. That's about all I know about him, although if you click the name, I'm sure that article is very informative. I myself couldn't be arsed to read the whole thing this morning, but since when do I have to do all the work for you. The Souljazz Orchestra - Freedom No Go Die (2007)Link 2The Souljazz Orchestra decided to bridge the gap between the worlds of funk and afrobeat, all the while staying open to the exploration of related genres, from boogaloo to soul, from highlife to jazz. Wolfgang Haffner-Live & Real [2002]Real Link 2In spring 2002 the new Wolfgang Haffner Band went on a 25 city - tour across Europe. Without even trying to be bashful about it, this band en route with Haffner,a native from Nuremberg, could just as well be designated a Dream Band when it comes to Groove-Jazz. Multiphonically magnificent the soaring saxophone workby Hungarian top-instrumentalist Tony Lakatos; on loan from the Nils Landgren Funk Unit the authoritative bass voicings from Magnum Coltrane Price; at times thrilling, other times gossamer light, always enchanting the guitar sounds of DutchmanPeter Tiehuis when his fingers touch down on the strings. Vladislav Sendetzki from Poland comps a sovereign keyboard foundation for the group's sounds, paving the way for vocalist Eddie Greene, who performs brilliantly for example in a soul-seething rendition of that Roy Ayers' classic "Searchin'". More a Prince album featuring Eric Leeds than a proper "pop jazz" album, its a complete left turn from what Prince was doing at the time. If anything, the first 2 Madhouse albums will ALWAYS serve as prominent examples of Prince's prowess on the drums. You can play Five and Seven back to back for that. Eric Leeds - Things Left Unsaid [1993]Unsaid Link 2His name is Eric Leeds and he is funky, at least some of the time, on the intriguing and eclectic yet often maddening Things Left Unsaid--his second WB project. Having toured with the enigmatic Prince for years, has picked up many of The Artist's (Prince) habits, both good and self indulgent. Despite moments of hot funk, this disc is all over the place, hitting on fusion, then world beat, then soul, finally Latin. With better overall melodic conception.Eric Leeds from the group Madhouse continues their specific soundscape here, but in a more relaxed way. Excellent album though!Eric Leeds - Times Squared [1991]Squared Link 2Sax player Eric Leeds - known principally for his stinging punches of sound and burlesque-hot solos on various Prince records and as a key member of the defunct band Madhouse - steps out on his own on this hard-to-get record. Manchild - Manchild [1997]Manchild Link 2A group that should have been much bigger than it was, the 70s/80s funk/rock/R&B collective Manchild takes the gritty guitar work of masters like Jimi Hendrix & Sly & The Family Stone and adds exquisite harmonizing reminiscent of Earth, Wind & Fire to create beautifully textured music that any fan of the above-mentioned groups should definitely want to check out. This group was also the first musical endeavor undertaken by the now-legendary Babyface. This compilation disc is probably the best place to start for a good introduction to this group, as it contains material made both before and after Babyface became a member of the group, and many of the group's original albums are available only as expensive import CDs, and the original LPs/cassettes are long out of print and very difficult to come by these days. All track info is in the comment section..

Pleasure - Dust Yourself Off [1975]When Pleasure's debut album, Dust Yourself Off, came out in 1975, the Portland, OR, combo often found itself being compared to the Blackbyrds. It was a valid comparison, to be sure -- like the Blackbyrds, Pleasure offered funk and soul with jazz overtones. Both bands recorded for Fantasy, and just as the Blackbyrds' mentor/producer was trumpeter Donald Byrd, Pleasure's was Crusaders trombonist Wayne Henderson (who, like Byrd, started out in hard bop but became very funk-minded in the '70s). But despite all those parallels, Pleasure had a distinctive energy of its own. And while the Blackbyrds had their share of major radio smashes, Pleasure's only major radio hit was 1979's "Glide." Produced by Henderson, Dust Yourself Off wasn't a favorite at soul radio but did earn Pleasure a small (and enthusiastic) cult following. Those who, back in 1975, were hip to this LP heard a lot of jazz-tinged potential on invigorating funk items like "Reality," ...

Lonnie Liston Smith & the Cosmic Echoes - Cosmic Funk [1974]
2008-04-24 09:41:00
This one is packed with classic tracks and is probably Smith’s best record of them all. He wasn’t quite discoed-out yet and he was fresh off of his traditional jazz runnings, so this record hits a very comfortable middle ground for fusion heads as well as those more tuned into smooth jazz. An incredible record ...

Johnny Guitar Watson - A Real Mother For Ya [1977]Real Link 2Jet magazine called him "one of rhythm & blues? most influential musicians." With a career spanning 40 years, Johnny "Guitar" Watson had success with blues, R&B and jazz.Watson refined his formula with A Real Mother For Ya (released a year after Ain?t That A Bitch), sending the album to #20 on the Pop charts and #3 on the Black charts. "Lover Jones" and the title track were also charting hits, with the latter just missing the Pop Top 40. As with most of his recordings of this time period, Watson handled everything but horns and drums himself.Johnny Guitar Watson-Ain't That a Bitch [1976]Johnny Link 2After his hugely successful late-?60s partnership with Larry Williams ("Mercy, Mercy, Mercy"), Watson had a few fallow years. But in 1976 he hit his stride with Ain?t That A Bitch, a potent combination of funk rhythms, jazz keyboards and stinging blues guitar. The album made the pop charts and reached #4 on the Black c...
