Marco Benevento - Invisible Baby [2008]Benevento Link 2Marco Benevento is riding a creative surge. Proof in point is the 30-year old keyboardist's debut studio album Invisible Baby, scheduled for release February 12 on HYENA Records. The collection proves Benevento a sonic innovator in peak form, defying boundaries and blasting through genres to carve out his own universe. Invisible Baby was recorded in a trio configuration with Benevento joined by bassist Reed Mathis (Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey) and drummers Matt Chamberlain (Tori Amos) and Andrew Barr (The Slip). Having earned a multitude of young fans and critical acclaim for his visionary electric keyboard work as one half of post rock instrumentalists The Benevento/Russo Duo, here Benevento utilizes acoustic piano as his main voice. His instincts, however, for arranging sound in fresh and unexpected ways remain firmly intact. On Invisible Baby's eight original compositions, Benevento runs his piano through projector amps and Les...

Prince - C-Note [Rare][2003]C Note Link 2The first 3 tracks are instrumentals named after the location they were recorded. The fourth track is an instrumental with Prince repeating "Tokyo" and was recorded in Tokyo. The fifth track is a live rendition of "Empty Room" (recorded October 25, 2002 in Copenhagen), an outtake originally intended for the album The Gold Experience, though the song was likely written ca. August 4, 1985, when it was first recorded.Collection of tracks recorded during sound checks on the "One Nite Alone... Live!" tourPer4med by Prince and the New Power GenerationPrince - Purple Rain [1984]P Rain Link 2Maybe this music by Prince & the Revolution will never quite sound as, well, revolutionary as it did in 1984 (and nothing else has ever sounded like the extraordinary cooing and fluttering of "When Doves Cry"), but it's a pop landmark in Prince's Artist-ic career. The hit movie was really just a big-screen showcase for Prince to perform these songs (some of...

Madhouse 24 [Rare][1987]24 link 2" 24" is a SUPER RARE collectable for Prince fans, released the same year as the more subtle 'Madhouse 8'! Back in 1986-1987, (Prince, Eric Leeds, Dr.Fink, Levi Seacer Jr, John Lewis, and Sheila E), and they created a more accessible project this time around.Madhouse - 8-16 B-sides [Rare][1987]B-Sides Link 2Much like Sheila E in The Glamorous Life, this was recorded in just under 5 days. More a Prince album featuring Eric Leeds than a proper "pop jazz" album, its a complete left turn from what Prince was doing at the time. If anything, the first 2 Madhouse albums will ALWAYS serve as prominent examples of Prince's prowess on the drums. You can play Five and Seven back to back for that. I had the pleasure of meeting Eric once and he basically spilled the beans on how the albums came about. Prince wanted to repay him for sticking around during all the changes in his band(s). From the beginning of 85 through the end of 86, Eric had been in The Family...

D'Sound - My Today [2006]D'Sound's new album, "My Today" blends the pure elements of their characteristic pop style with fine traces of jazz, bossa, 70s funk and glittering discobeats. Musically tight as always, the new D?Sound production rolls over us and claims the right to funk with the help of musicians like Till Bronner and Incognito's Tony Momrelle. The impressive live band has already toured with Roachford and The Brand New Heavies, and played support for Incognito for their tour of Germany last year. And of course ANYTHING backed by Incognito is automatically declared HEAT here, so check this record out and see for yourself (i.e., don't sleep....)D'Sound - Beauty Is A Blessing [1999]D'Sound - Doublehearted [2003]Out of these records here, this one was the one that seemed to be out in left fields as far as sound. Kyoto Jazz Massive & Especial Records presents Essence of Especial[2006]Link 2This one took me by surprise. Since it was compiled by Kyoto Jazz Massive, I knew I had to at least check it out and that faith was repaid. The insignias on the cover are hint to the label if you're into collecting 12" cuts from Hajime Yoshizawa or Sleep Walker; this is a compilation of tunes from that label - some of these tracks making rare or first appearances on cd format.A real treat is Bakura's "Empty Faces", loaded with neat effects and real great beats and production. I still dig the classic "Vera Cruz" but this is an awesome tribute. Then you've got a KJM Remix to Masa Collective's "Love is Everywhere". A:xus - Soundtrack For Life [2000]Link 2Bascom's focus on alternately earthy and atmospheric house belies the tremendously precise production sense on display for his first full-length. Though he's closest in sound to house and the more danceable end of '90s acid jazz (Faze Action, Beanfield, A Forest Mighty Black), Bascom's fusion of the impeccably produced, the thematically complex, and the musically diverse also places him as an inheritor of Detroit techno. As such, excellent Motor City producers like Derrick May and Carl Craig are the links to a jazz-funk-lite number like "Baghdad Cafe (Callin' U)," the electro tributes "My Planet Rocks" and "Synchronicity," and the interstellar techno-jazz meditation "Pluto." The vocal tracks, with contributions from Naomi N'Sembi and Rosina, are well-spaced and not overly indulgent (occasionally a problem on dance albums). Strong, clever production skills and a feel for musical variety that never sounds forced gives Soundtrack for Life a...

Yoshinori Sunahara - Works '95-'05 [2007][Disc 1]Yoshinori Sunahara - Works '95-'05 [2007][Disc 2]This collection proves, if anything else, that Sunahara's production talents are just as important to his career than any of his original compositions. I've wondered what he's been doing since his last studio album Love Beat in 2001, and this collection provides some answers.CD 1 comprises of 11 tracks covering his four studio albums. All of the tracks are in their original form except for "Elegant World," which has a different mix and which has the orchrestral intro and outro cut out as well as the girl speaking (thankfully). These tracks have been remastered. Apart from the standard audio punchup you get from a remastering, I also noticed more of a separation in the mixes. This clarity is more striking when you listen to the tracks through headphones. Perhaps this was the more pressing need for the remastering since we're dealing with albums that were released fairly recently....

If you know his work with Kyoto Jazz Massive, you'll know that Hajime's groove is already pretty expansive, with bits of Nu Jazz, Broken Beats, brazilian, Latin, Fusion, and soulful House all percolating together wonderfully!! The sound is also expanded even more strongly, but not in that "aggressive" remix album sort of mode, where all the producers are fighting to outdo each other. Herbie Hancock - Future 2 Future
2007-12-29 21:55:00
One of Herbie Hancock's greatest attributes is his ability to take a contemporary form of music and add his own unique perspective through his recordings. Future 2 Future is no exception to the rule. Teaming with Bill Laswell, Hancock recruits some of the most forward-thinking musicians in music for Future 2 Future. The contributions of electronic music pioneer Carl Craig, vocal diva Chaka Khan, drum'n'bass producer A Guy Called Gerald, as well as jazz legends Jack DeJohnette and Wayne Shorter make the album feel like a cross between modern electronica and world music. While a lineup with such immense talent promises the delivery of a powerhouse record, the finished product only delivers the goods moderately. Several pieces produced for the album were almost completed before Hancock contributed keyboards. This production method leaves the record lacking the spontaneity and continuity that grace several of his early electronic-based records and tenure with the Headhunters, to the ...

The trio of the wonders, Mathew Jonson, Danuel Tate e Tyger Dhula aka Cobblestone Jazz, releases its first album, an incredible explosive mixture of techno, jazz, deep house and minimal which sets up, as usual, their winning weapon. The unreleased pieces which impressed me in a particular way, and so I suggest, are ?Hired Touch?, ?W?, (which was already in the last Cocoon compilation) and ?What You Want? (with which is expressly attested the improvisation of these composers of the new age). As it has been always said, winning sound doesn?t change, and so there is nothing left to do but opt for the purchase of the triple vinyl or the cd which features also the unforgettable ?Dump Truck? and ?India In Me? plus the live versions of the news. The Quartertones - Hidden In Plain Sight [IMPORT][2004]The Quartertones? debut album reveals a sophisticated intertwining of organic hip-hop beats with heavy Jazz guitar and bass - accentuated by sultry Jazz and Pop vocals and guest rhymesayers. Developing as a live experiment in merging new and classic Urban sounds, The Quartertones emerged from the depths of Toronto?s underground Hip-Hop scene as the city?s original freestyle Hip-Hop Funk band. A year in the making, and some tracks dating as far back as 1998, The Quartertones are proud to present their debut CD Hidden In Plain Sight. Starting as a Jazz band in 1996, The Quartertones became Toronto?s live answer to freestyle/open mic nights occupying several underground Hip-Hop hot spots around the city. United Future Organization-No Sound Is Too Taboo (1995)
2007-12-04 20:03:00
Pioneers of the Japanese acid-jazz sound, the United Future Organization comprised Tokyo club DJs Tadashi Yabe, Toshio Matsuura and French expatriate Raphael Sebbag. Joining forces in 1990, the trio quickly emerged as a leading force on the Tokyo underground club scene, making their recorded debut the next year with the 12-inch "I Love My Baby (My Baby Loves Jazz); " "Loud Minority/Moon Dance" followed in mid-1992, becoming a cult favorite on club circuits ranging from London to Hamburg to New York City. UFO's debut LP Jazzin' 91-93 appeared that September, the same month the trio made their triumphant British debut at London's Fridge club; an American record deal was not forthcoming until 1994, however, with a self-titled collection appearing on Verve Forecast. No Sound Is Too Taboo followed in 1995, with United Future Organization resurfacing in 1997 with 3rd Perspective. In 2000 the trio returned with the album, Bon Voyage on Instinct.1. Triosk - The Headlight Serenade (2006)
2007-12-01 21:57:00
Triosk is an instrumental trio based in Sydney, Australia. Their music melds their jazz background (the three met at Sydney's Conservatorium of Music) with post-rock and ambient electronica, resulting in a strange, beautiful conglomeration of myriad influences. The group's members - Adrian Klumpes, Ben 'Donny' Waples, and Laurence Pike, on piano/keyboard/samples, electric/acoustic bass and drums/percussion respectively - also make extensive use of samples and processing in both studio and live shows. The group formed in 2001, with their first release - a collaboration with German experimental electronica artist Jan Jelinek called 1+3+1 - being released on the ~Scape label in November of 2003. From leftover studio time for that session came the group's first album distinct from any involvement with Jelinek, called Moment Returns, released on the Leaf Label in October of 2004. Baby Mammoth - Swimming
2007-11-10 13:13:00
Mark Blissenden and Andrew Burdall are the force behind the acid jazzy downtempo duo Baby Mammoth. The two share an appreciation for Deep House. They connected and started writing music together in 1994.Amidst heavy competition, Baby Mammoth is the Pork label's most prolific act, packing in five full LPs of blunted instrumental hip-hop between their debut in late 1996 and the end of the decade. Like other Pork acts Fila Brazillia and Solid Doctor, the duo of Mark Blissenden and Andrew Burdall specialize in earthy breaks and ambient atmospheres, more slanted to the instrumental edge of acid jazz than other producer-based trip-hop acts. The pair first met Pork label-head Dave Brennand and associate Steve Cobby (aka Fila Brazillia) at a club in Hull, where both band and label are based. The relationship blossomed with the release of Baby Mammoth's debut, 10,000 Years Beneath the Street, in 1996. Blissenden and Burdall then released two albums the following year (as well as an EP and ...
