NASA has Published an Awesome Set of Pictures of Colliding Galaxies
2008-04-30 16:48:00
Did you know that Hubble space telescope has been operating already 18 years? To celebrate this anniversary NASA has published 59 new pictures of colliding galaxies. This is the biggest single set of Hubble pictures ever published. Collisions of galaxies is just normal evolution, but it all happens in such a long time period and within ...
NGC 2207 and IC 2163 Galaxies
2008-04-29 10:05:00
Take a look at the spectacular view of two galaxies. These two galaxies are known as NGC 2207 and IC 2163 and they are slowly pulling each other apart. So, billions of years from now, only one of these two galaxies will remain. Astronomers predict that NGC 2207, the larger galaxy on the left, will eventually incorporate IC 2163, the smaller galaxy on the right. NASA
Hubble Discovers 67 more "lensed" galaxies.
2008-03-20 05:33:00
We gotta keep this telescope operational: Hubble discovers 67 new gravitationally lensed galaxies What is gravitational lensing? Gravitational lensing occurs when light travelling toward us from a distant galaxy is magnified and distorted as it encounters a massive object between the galaxy and us. These gravitational lenses often allow astronomers to peer much farther back into the early universe than they would normally be able to do. Here is a cool video of an Einstein Ring. An Einstein ring is a complete circle image of a background galaxy, which is formed when the background galaxy, a massive, foreground galaxy, and the Hubble Space Telescope are all aligned perfectly. Therein creating a complete circle lense effect. > > So pretty pictures are nice, but what impact do these discoveries have on astro-physics?  Well read on dear surfer, read on. ...they can be used to create a census of galaxy masses in the universe to test the predictions of cosmological mo...

Night Trippers From Distant Galaxies
2008-03-02 02:30:00
Last night I was hanging out with Rich from Kill Ugly Radio and Daniel Flessas during Daniel's KBOO radio show, "The Outside World", when I came to the realization that I need to start doing podcasts on Eclectic Grooves. Around three a.m., I dragged myself home in that state somewhere between the realm of awareness and sleep. When I arrived at the apartment, I compiled this mix that I am featuring today. This mix features a wide variety of styles that seem to coalesce into a psychedelic space-rock contingent. Even though this is not a podcast, I plan on featuring podcasts here in the near future. I hope you enjoy the mix, and would love to hear what you guys think. Night Trippers From Distant Galaxies1) D. A Gas Hook Points To Galaxies Future
2008-02-10 18:49:00
Like a fork piercing a fried egg, a giant finger of hydrogen gas is poking through our Milky Way Galaxy from outside, astronomers have found. The location of the intrusion may give a crucial clue to the fate of the little galaxies the gas flows from, the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds.?We?re thrilled because we can determine exactly where this gas is ploughing into the Milky Way ? it?s usually extremely hard to get distances to such gas features,? said the research team leader, Dr Naomi McClure-Griffiths of CSIRO?s Australia Telescope National Facility. The gas finger, called HVC306-2+230, is running into the starry disk of our Galaxy about 70 thousand light-years (21kpc) away from us. On the sky, the point of contact is near the Southern Cross. The finger is the pointy end of the so-called Leading Arm of gas that streams ahead of the Magellanic Clouds towards the Milky Way.Until last year, astronomers generally thought that the Magellanic Clouds had orbited our Galaxy many times, a...
Dark Energy Now Making Galaxies Keep Their Distance
2008-01-31 20:14:00
This picture shows an accelerating expansion of space due to dark energy appears to make it harder for galaxies (blue dots) to fall into crowded clusters today compared to 7 billion years ago.It seems that galaxies today are struggling to clump together against the incredible repulsive power of dark energy, hints a new survey of thousands of galaxies. Measuring this anti-clumping effect puts a new arrow in the quiver of cosmologists seeking to uncover the nature of the mysterious force.Scientists proposed the existence of a mysterious repulsive force called dark energy in 1998 to explain supernova observations showing the universe is expanding at ever faster rates.Since then, researchers have been trying to measure the properties of dark energy more precisely, in the hope of discovering what it is. Possible explanations include fluctuating energy fields from quantum physics and the effects of unseen extra spatial dimensions. In some scenarios, the strength of dark energy changes wit...

Identify Never-Before-Seen Galaxies
2008-01-11 19:01:00
GalaxyZoo is probably not new news, but it is to me. If you create account, you will make a significant scientific contribution by classifying new galaxies, many of which have never been seen before!Trust me it's as easy as it sounds. Turn in your name and you'll even be credited! Try to determine spiral, elliptical, and merging galaxies from fuzzy original photos. The computer program can pick out the galaxies, but the human eye is the only thing that can classify them.Easy as it sounds, labelling can be tricky. They are awfully fuzzy, and sometimes you have to identify photographs from a bad angle.Got some down time? Let's classify some galaxies!P.S. The GalaxyZoo blog will be on the blogroll from now on too! Check it out!

Dark Star Could be Wiping Out Other Galaxies
2007-12-19 06:41:00
A black hole blasting an immense jet of energy into a neighbouring galaxy has been observed by astronomers for the first time. The jet is so powerful that it wipes out any life in its path. The stream erupted in a galactic system called 3C321, which consists of two galaxies orbiting each other in relatively close proximity of just 20 thousand light years."The jet began impacting the galaxy about one million years ago, a small fraction of the system's lifetime," it said in a statement. It said the effect on the stricken galaxy would likely be substantial, but not necessarily negative."The massive influx of energy and radiation from the jet could induce the formation of large numbers of stars and planets after its initial wake of destruction is complete.I think the scienific community is preparing themselves for the inevitable they will soon have to share more wth the general public about what is really happening in our universe because if they don't they realize we will find out they...

Deadly Dance of Two Galaxies
2007-10-31 21:22:00
Yesterday, the Hubble telescope spotted two intertwining galaxies and produced this stunning image:The pair of galaxies are gliding past each other, and literally through each other, and the effects of gravity are evident. Even in the spiral arms, which appear as "fuzz", there are many millions of stars and even though they pass through the galaxy together, stars won't likely collide, though orbits will likely be altered.

Two Million Galaxies
2007-10-07 07:53:00
reposted from: http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apo-d/astropix.html Two Million Galaxies Credit & Copyright: S. Maddox (Nottingham U.) et al. APM Survey, Astrophys. Dept. Oxford U. Explanation: Our universe is filled with galaxies. Galaxies -- huge conglomerations of stars, gas, dust -- and mysterious dark matter are the basic building blocks of the large-scale universe. Although distant galaxies move away from each other as the universe expands, gravity attracts neighboring galaxies to each other, forming galaxy groups, clusters of galaxies, and even larger expansive filaments. Some of these structures are visible on one of the most comprehensive maps of the sky ever made in galaxies: the APM galaxy survey map completed in the early 1990s. Over 2 million galaxies are depicted above in a region 100 degrees across centered toward our Milky Way Galaxy's south pole. Bright regions indicate more galaxies, while bluer colors denote larger averag...
Neighbor Galaxies Just Passing Through

Share on StumbleUpon: Our closest galactic companions are not companions at all — just strangers passing us in the night. New measurements of the speeds of the Magellanic Clouds show that the cloudy apparitions of Southern skies may be zooming past the Milky Way and not its little siblings after all.New 3-D measurements of both the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Small Magellanic Cloud put their speeds at close to the escape velocity from the Milky Way. That suggests they're rather new arrivals and may not even stick around. The speeds of the lesser galaxies were worked out by first establishing the precise positions of very distant and powerful quasars in the deep background sky behind the vastly closer Magellanic Clouds. With the quasars providing an unmoving frame of reference, observations with the Hubble Space Telescope allowed astronomers to directly measure changes in positions of stars in the Magellanic Cloud.

"Missing Mass" Found in Recycled Dwarf Galaxies
2007-05-13 20:59:00
Astronomers studying dwarf galaxies formed from the debris of a collision of larger galaxies found the dwarfs much more massive than expected, and think the additional material is "missing mass" that theorists said should not be present in this kind of dwarf galaxy. The scientists used the National Science Foundation's Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope to study a galaxy called NGC 5291, 200 million light-years from Earth. This galaxy collided with another 360 million years ago, and the collision shot streams of gas and stars outward. Later, the dwarf galaxies formed from the ejected debris."Our detailed studies of three 'recycled' dwarf galaxies in this system showed that the dwarfs have twice as much unseen matter as visible matter. This was surprising, because they were expected to have very little unseen matter," said Frederic Bournaud, of the French astrophysics laboratory AIM of the French CEA and CNRS. Bournaud and his colleagues announced their discovery in the May 10 ...
