Gamecocks? top hoops star arrested
2008-05-06 05:58:00 LEADING SCORER DOWNEY CHARGED WITH ON-CAMPUS ASSAULT For the University of South Carolina’s athletics program, the off-the-field legal problems have just been extended to the basketball court. News has just broken that Devan Downey, the sophomore who led the Gamecocks in scoring last year, was arrested Monday on a simple assault charge. We spoke with USC spokesman Russ McKinney, who said early last week around lunchtime Downey and another USC student got into an argument at the Russell House on campus. McKinney described the incident as “very minor.” Campus police investigated, and at the time, the student decided they didn’t want to press charges against Downey. That student changed their mind Monday, and Downey found himself at Richland County’s Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. [WIS] Unlock the football players arrested, Downey is a major star. He’s easily USC’s best player and one of the best in the Southeastern Conference. To call this...
Ariail on Gamecocks in Five Points
2008-03-31 17:22:00 STATE EDITORIAL CARTOONIST LAMPOONS USC PLAYERS The recent wave of University of South Carolina football players getting arrested or in fights has been incredibly troubling for Gamecock fans. When you add in the fact that a number of these situations have involved starters — including highly touted quarterback Stephen Garcia — it’s been a particularly difficult offseason. Almost as troubling as these problems is the fact that it seems like all of them have happened in Columbia’s Five Points. That’s because a number of them have. Defensive end Jordin Lindsey was stabbed in the neck with a broken beer bottle last December. Earlier this month, freshman lineman Kevin Young was charged with fighting and resisting arrest. Two weeks later, walk-on safety Michael Newton was arrested for disorderly conduct during the St. Patrick’s Day celebration. And we still have five months to go. Now, I can personally attest that Five Points is ground zero for figh...

Gamecocks Slighted in 2007-08 College Power Rankings
2007-11-15 17:28:00 CollegeHumor has released their 2007-2008 Power Rankings with Clemson coming in at #9 and the Gamecocks at #15. It is hard to question this flawless formula, but there are a few categories that I must address. According to my calculations if the following changes were made South Carolina would jump to #8, one ...

Gamecocks party, Gamecocks lose
2007-11-05 23:40:00 PLAYERS WENT OUT PARTYING NIGHT BEFORE ARKANSAS TRIP DRUNKENVILLE, S.C. (TPS) - For Gamecock fans, Saturday’s loss to SEC rival Arkansas was the third straight heart-breaker in as many weeks. The 48-36 loss means South Carolina is no longer ranked and, with two tough opponents remaining, faces the prospect of going from 6-1 to not making a bowl. While it was the team as a whole that lost and not one particular player’s fault, one of the most glaring weaknesses was the offensive line. Quarterback Blake Mitchell was sacked twice and hurried at least another dozen times. It seemed the rare occasion that more than three seconds passed between the time the ball was snapped and the time the Razorback defense was in the South Carolina backfield. And then we received these hilarious photos of Gamecock’s right tackle Justin Sorensen (above and left) — among a number of other players — from a reader who said they were taken on Halloween night in Columbia&rsqu...
