Mahatma Gandhi
2008-10-15 10:00:00

Indian visitor upset over Gandhi statue position at Tussauds
2008-06-07 08:09:00
AHMEDABAD: Not happy with the placement of Mahatma Gandhi's statue at Madam Tussauds, a man from Gujarat after his first visit to the famous wax museum has written to Britain's Prime Minister Gordon Brown to shift it from that position. V K Saxena of National Council of Civic Liberties in his letter to Brown said the statue is not placed in the wing where the statues of other illustrious world leaders are exhibited. Gandhi's statue is placed at an isolated corner on the second floor near an ice cream parlour close to the dustbin, Saxena wrote in his letter. Thousands of visitors who use this parlour throw away waste into the bin which often spills out near the statue, he said. He requested Brown to take immediate action to see that this anomaly is rectified. Saxena has also sent copies of his letter to all national leaders including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Leader of Opposition L K Advani.Source: economictimes
Eat Your Heart Out Gandhi
2008-06-06 03:33:00
by Jayne Lyn Stahl What might get lost in the ad nauseum mainstream media coverage of the gladiator-style struggle for the Democratic Party presidential nomination is what the Associated Press calls a "landmark treaty" which received a formal thumbs-up on Friday at a meeting, in Dublin, of more than 100 nations, including many of our partners in NATO. Not only does the treaty call for banning munitions cluster designs, but demands the destruction of stockyards within the next ten years. What's more, not only did the U.S. boycott these negotiations, but joined other major manufacturers of cluster bombs, Russia, China, India, Israel and Pakistan, in doing so. Our focus and that of the other munitions' manufacturers was not on how deleterious cluster bombs are, but on their military (i.e. monetary) value. One defense analyst even went so far as to argue that "only countries that don't fight wars" would draft a treaty like this, and say that its value is stri...

Indira Gandhi
2008-05-25 15:34:00
Life of Indira Gandhi was span which witnessed the transition between socialist India of Nehru and Liberal India of today.  She ruled through a mixture of populist antipoverty thought which was in fact the major force who brought her to power and her strategic alliances internally, with the left parties and externally with other likeminded nations like former USSR. She in fact used the factor in her favors which bothered her father- the anti- imperialist tenets.   She actually was not a corridor between the past and present India after independence. She witnessed the last phase of cold war as both the axis powers withdrew sharply. Back at home, explosion of corruption because of babudom expanding into the economy of the nation, banks were nationalized.  There were schemes like small savings and tax avoidance were introduced to stabilize the economy and the middle class lives were subsidized. At the party level she impacted the congress to the extent that it has never re...

Pakistan's 'Gandhi' party takes on Taliban, Al Qaeda
2008-05-06 10:38:00
The ANP, for its part, wants to bring more accountability to negotiations by putting all the facts before the people. Past negotiations under the military-led government were never made public, says Sen. Zahid Khan of the ANP. So when agreements inevitably fell apart amid accusations and counteraccusations, no one knew who was right. "We'll make all the developments in the talks public so as the masses can judge who is backing out of his words," he says. "The party going against the agreement would have to take the ire of the masses." In this way, negotiations can serve a strategic purpose. Defense analyst Ikram Sehgal says there are many natural points of disagreement between Pashtun tribals and foreign terrorists, such as the tactic of suicide bombing. "Terrorist ideology is completely anathema to tribal ideology," he says. "The whole idea is to drive a wedge between the tribals and the terrorists." Yet Rashid and others say that to ultimately succeed, the government...
Ranbir Kapoor to Play Rajiv Gandhi in Jha's Rajniti
2008-04-30 10:58:00
Ranbir Kapoor is finally ditching the lover boy tag! Looks like the actor will play none other than slain PM Rajiv Gandhi in Prakash Jha’s Rajniti.   “I had my mind and heart set on Ranbir for the role. It’s a role that requires innocence, nobility, idealism, vision and dynamism. It also requires a personality of perfect breeding and gentility. I’d have probably dropped Rajniti if Ranbir hadn’t agreed. I could see he was guarded when we met. But the reserve dissolved when I narrated my script to him. ‘I am doing this,’ is all he said after hearing me out,” says Jha.   Jha is currently looking at three top young international actresses to play Ranbir’s companion. “The heroine won’t be a non-descript model or TV actress posing as a big star for a Bollywood film. The actress opposite Ranbir will be a top-of-the-line name.”

Gandhi daughter visits assassin
2008-04-16 05:02:00
April 16, BBC NewsPriyanka Gandhi, daughter of former Indian prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, says she has met a woman serving a jail term for her father's assassination.Ms Gandhi said she met Nalini Sriharan last month in a prison in Vellore in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.Rajiv Gandhi was killed by a suicide bomb in May 1991 while he addressed an election rally. India has always blamed the attack on Tamil Tiger rebels.Sriharan was convicted for being part of the assassination squad. She was initially given a death sentence along with three others. But her sentence was changed into a life term, following a plea for clemency by Rajiv Gandhi's widow and Congress Party president, Sonia Gandhi.Mrs Gandhi appealed on Sriharan's behalf because she had a young child.Correspondents say Priyanka Gandhi's visit is highly significant because her father's murder shocked India and turned many people in Tamil Nadu and elsewhere against the Tamil Tigers. In 2006, they expressed "regret" for the...

Gandhi An Autobiography: The Story of My Experiments With Truth
2008-03-23 04:36:00
Paperback: 528 pagesPublisher: Beacon Press; Reprint edition (November 1, 1993)ISBN-10: 0807059099ISBN-13: 978-0807059098Gandhi?s nonviolent struggles in South Africa and India had already brought him to such a level of notoriety, adulation, and controversy that when asked to write an autobiography midway through his career, he took it as an opportunity to explain himself. Although accepting of his status as a great innovator in the struggle against racism, violence, and, just then, colonialism, Gandhi feared that enthusiasm for his ideas tended to exceed a deeper understanding. He says that he was after truth rooted in devotion to God and attributed the turning points, successes, and challenges in his life to the will of God. His attempts to get closer to this divine power led him to seek purity through simple living, dietary practices (he called himself a fruitarian), celibacy, and ahimsa, a life without violence. It is in this sense that he calls his book The Story of My Experi...

Arun Gandhi Quits Peace Institute in Flap Over Blog Posting
2008-03-18 21:29:00
I was sitting in the audience a few years ago when Arun Gandhi came to Los Angeles and spoke in a local college auditorium. I was also chosen to stand up and ask the man a question, and he replied to it to my satisfaction. After the question-answer period had come to a conclusion, I had the opportunity to speak to him personally, and I came away feeling rather awestruck by this seemingly peaceful, non-violent nature of the man. Recently he has written in the Washington Post "...that Jewish identity is "locked into the holocaust experience," which Jews "overplay . . . to the point that it begins to repulse friends." The Jewish nation -- Israel, he wrote -- is too reliant upon weapons and bombs and should instead befriend its enemies. "Apparently, in the modern world, so determined to live by the bomb, this is an alien concept. You don't befriend anyone, you dominate them. We have created a culture of violence (Israel and the Jews are the biggest players) and that Culture of Violen...
