Oxygen levels in River Ganges dip alarmingly
2008-04-16 09:27:00 Even though millions have been spent to preserve the sacred River Ganges, the pollution level in the river has reached an alarming level. The oxygen level in the river water has dripped to alarmingly low levels. The banks of the river present an ironical picture where on one side religious activities like prayers, recital of hymns and fire-rituals take place and on the other side, heaps of garbage lies unattended to. [ ... ] According to reports, while funds are being allocated for the noble and much required river cleaning projects, the many projects have not seen the implementation stage as yet. While the pollution data has made the environmentalists pull up their socks, the religious seers in the country have been protesting against the increasing pollution levels for quite some time now. "The trees are being cut, there is imbalance in the ecology. The glaciers that used to feed the river are melting today. It is an alarming situation. If things don't impr...

Rafting the white water spectacles of Ganges
2007-07-20 07:49:00 It was pure magic. We were floating right in the middle of the holy Ganges, with the white water gushing from all sides. Is it the real me? I wondered. Considering I am not the dare devil type, it was hard to believe that I could convince myself to jump right in the middle of the busy river. I guess it was all about the experience. After all, we were cruising through the rapids of the river with life jackets as our only protection. And then, the sheer magic of the virgin nature around me probably made everything seem possible, even jumping into a river without knowing the S of swimming. For me, the river rafting trip meant a lot more than just the exciting sport.Love at first sight None of us were prepared for what was going to meet our eye after the six hour drive from Delhi. We had spent the 27 kms drive from Rishikesh, (which seemed more like a chase to a no man's land) in excitement and anxiety. After all, we had not seen any brochures and had done no web search. So, when we se...

Holy River - A Journey Down the Ganges
2007-03-12 02:51:00 I look forward to following the journey of Peter Foster as he travels down the River Ganges. The river Ganges is held to be sacred in India. Beginning high in the foothills of the Himalayas the Ganges is viewed as the personification of the deity Ganga. It is the Hindu belief that bathing in the Ganges can purify your sins. Slowly Down the Ganges, Eric Newby
2007-01-26 15:41:01 Long a favourite of Adventure Literature fans, Eric Newby records his, and his wife’s, attempt to navigate the Ganges via water during the winter of 1964. The attempt falls to pieces in many different ways, but like Newby’s other adventures, the pratfalls are what make the attempt worth reading about. On his forty-fourth birthday Eric Newby, a self-confessed river lover, sets out on a 1200-mile journey down the Ganges River from Hardwar to the Bay of Bengal, accompanied by his wife, Wanda. Things do not go smoothly as they run aground 63 times in the first six days, but gradually India’s holiest river, The Pure, The Eternal, The Creator of Happiness, lives up to its many names and captures them in its spell. Traveling in a variety of boats, most of them unsuitable, as well as by bus and bullock car, the Newbys become intemately acquainted with the river’s shifting moods an colorful history. Slowly Down the Ganges brims over with engaging characters and ent...
