New Year's Eve in Garapan
2008-01-01 00:02:00
Fat guy in a party hat: New Year's Eve was a lot of fun this year. Before heading out to celebrate the New Year, EJ and I had a nice quiet celebration in my Garapan apartment. Well, it would have been quiet if it wasn't for the Chinese masseuses setting off fireworks downstairs. We stayed in for most of the evening. I made her dinner. We watched a movie. We shared a bottle of wine. The Korean Party Girl wouldn't stay cooped up all night, though. With all that sweet, romantic relationship crap out of the way, it was time to go out and party! My car is still dead and EJ's car was rented out (her parents own that car rental place on the corner of Beach Road near American Memorial Park), so we had to stay in Garapan. We hit up the three most popular bars in Saipan. All three are within walking distance, so naturally we took my scooter.I'm a princess, damn it!: The people at Ocean's were handing out tiaras. I never knew a plastic crown could make a grown woman so happy. The party ...
Gomen na Saipanda

Saipan's mascot is Saipanda. Saipanda is half-panda and half-rhino. The Japanese love him; the locals hate him. What the heck does a panda have to do with Saipan anyways?Well, Saipanda is just a play on words. The Japanese word for rhino is "Sai." So the literal translation of "Saipanda" into Japanese is something like "Rhino Panda." Saipanda can also mean "It's Saipan" in both Korean and Japanese and in Russian it sounds like, "Saipan Yes."So that is the connection between Pandas, Rhinos, and Saipan. It is purely meaningless, has nothing to do with the location, and is just an attempt to be cute.So.In Japanese, Saipan could also translate into "Rhino Bread." So why not create a Rhino Bread Man character? Japan already has Anpanman,a character with a head made out of bread stuffed with bean jam (see photo). From wikipedia:Anpanman (??????, voiced by Keiko Toda): The hero of the story, whose head is a bun made by Jam Ojisan. His name comes from the fact that he is a man with a head m...

Wednesdays are Slow Jam Nights at Chambre Bar at Fiesta. The band, this week it was First Circle, for the next three months it will be Streetbeat, plays slower songs using acoustic instruments. Chambre is set up like a smoking lounge; the combination of atmosphere, live music, and Pirates of the Caribbean II playing on the TV is pretty hip. What a perfect time to discuss hot singers. The girl in the picture with Joe, EJ, and me is one of the singers from First Circle. I don't know her name, but she's hot. The other First Circle singer is hot, too.Remember April and Gina from Brown Republic Band? They were hot. Anchel from Resound was hot and the scary girl from ART was hot, but she was scary.Which leads to a discussion of the two new girls from Streetbeat:So who's hotter? Short skirt or short shorts?Alright, enough about hot girls. On to more important things.Soccer.I strung together a little video of this month's CNMI vs Guam game:Go CNMI!!!Alright, how about some tree hugger stu...
The Saipan Blogger needs a break

Ice Cream Break: I need to take more of these.I truly do not understand people who say that there is nothing to do on this island. I feel like the opposite is true; there is so much to do on this tiny rock in the Pacific that I can't find the time to fit everything in.Sorry for the lack of blogging in the last couple of days (I did make a few posts, but I deleted them). My schedule has been really hectic. I haven't had time to catch up.Beautify CNMI! had two large events, the pet show and the beauty pageant, I made some class visits for CNMI Pet Week, we had several meetings, created new Beautify CNMI committees, had a cleanup, played some soccer, went to the taste of the Marianas, and I even fit in a dive on Sunday afternoon.I even remembered to call my Mom on Mother's Day. Go me.I leave for Majuro in exactly three weeks. I have to finish up the RC&D job by then; maybe things will slow down after I get back....alright, back to work.
