Digging For Victory: Sky Farmers and Guerrilla Gardeners
2008-06-01 11:13:00
Old News: Gardening is In Once again in the UK it has been suggested that we are behind the eco-friendly times, now caught red-faced and red-handed with basket-full of imported vegetables. The production and transportation of food is responsible for 23% of our carbon footprint; above home energy, personal travel, and running shared services like hospitals and schools. [source] China, Japan and Cuba are way ahead of us in their responsible actions, but being a tiny, densely populated island with horrible weather is no excuse, according to the more heroic amongst gardeners. No, gardening, especially growing vegetables, is not just for your granddad, a left-over habit from the War. It’s possibly the coolest pastime of now. To be caught with compost under your fingernails and a faint whiff of Brussels sprouts, rather than an air-freighted fistful of Zimbabwean mangetout, may be your ticket to unimaginable kudos. The Urban Farmer Take Fritz Haeg for example. The architect and design ac...
Celebrity Gardeners Help Celebrate Compost Awareness Week
2008-05-05 16:22:00
Just because I’m a lean, green, vegan machine doesn’t mean my social group swims in the same pool. In fact, while my friends are always progressing, my nearest and dearest aren’t necessarily the most eco-friendly kids on the block. So when I called my buddy Tyler this morning to wish him a HAPPY COMPOST AWARENESS WEEK, I was met with a long sigh, an obvious eye roll and a snappy comeback– “And what’s next? Trash in a tree month?” True, we environmental so-and-sos have a lot of special days, weeks and months, but what’s life without a little celebration every now and then, right? And so in the spirit of green holidays, let’s pause for a moment and celebrate the ever-growing, socially responsible, compost revolution! Compost Awareness week is organized by The Composting Association (CA) and WRAP, with the goal of increasing awareness of compost in the wider community and highlight its many benefits and applications - particularly f...

Why be left to wonder if you’re eating pesticides and other toxins when you can grow your own food. More and more people are turning ...

Gardeners Beware...Purchase Tools At Your Own Risk
2008-03-11 15:09:00
If you can't prove you are over 18 and you wish to purchase garden tools from Wyvale Garden Centers, you might be in for a surprise.... For many years now I have been a fan of Wolf garden tools. I particularly like using the Multi-Change tools, as many different heads will fit numerous size handles, enabling you to use the right tool for the job. Well I needed a larger rake head , for a forthcoming project, and I decided that the nearest place to get one would be the Wyvale in Donnington. The rake I was after was this bow rake.It is made of solid, high quality steel and the special advantage is that it can be used for two tasks: the strong tines will loosen soil and when turned round can be used for levelling out the soil. It also has these attributes...and another that I didn't know about, but was soon to discover.Width - 35cm Curved teeth can be pulled through smoothly and easily. For soil and gravel.Flat top for levelling seed beds. I added the rake to my trolley and had a bit o...
FOR ALL YOU LAZY GARDENERS OUT THERE - WET POT
2008-01-09 16:43:00
Allow your products to take care of themselves with these great self watering pots. The WET POT uses capillary action to ensure your plant receives all the water it requires. Clay naturally regulates water absorption - and so the plant can draw all the water it requires THROUGH the pot. To use, simply down the clay pot in water for a day before planting up with the plant of your choice. Ensure the top of the plant is level with the brim of the pot and that soil is packed tight around the plant. Then all you need to do is pour water through the watering hole until the glass cylinder is 1 inch below the rim - and relaxAs long as water remains in the outer glass cylinder, your plant will be able to draw on these water reserves without becoming oversaturated! Clever huh?

Adelaide Gardeners Revolt
2007-09-04 00:10:00
The common citizen gardeners are revolting against a requirement that they cannot water their gardens, except using buckets. The talk back radio waves are full of angry upstanding citizens ranting against the State Labor Governments attack on gardeners rights and the injustice of old ladies getting up early to walk around with buckets to preserve their gardening treasures. With temperatures already in the high twenties and no rain, it is a real issue for many people. On the weekend the Murdoch Rag had a serious double page spread on the issues of watering gardens, drippers and the like and the need for water economy, which nobody doubts. The major advertiser on the page supporting this was a swimming pool company promising swimming pools by Christmas. You can't fill them, but you can get them installed. Perhaps you can fill it with buckets. For a rainwater tank on the other hand, that would be about 9 months in some cases. Ironic.

A gardeners Tale
2007-02-09 20:28:01
After finishing my degree In PPE (Politics, Philosophy and Economics)  * at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford University. I made (a not very common) career choice and got a job as a gardener in my own college.  At the time I flirted with become a professional gardener and when revising for my final exams I used to intersperse bit of Keynes and Friedman with memorising Latin names for plants.  View: Pictures from my garden
Innovations for the Environmentalists and the Gardeners
2006-09-01 16:48:05
Looking for a way to support our environment? Our Guest Blogger, Gloria Campos-Hensley, is from Houston and is fascinated with innovations that make living and working in today's times a little more convenient. She wrote this article for readers of AmericanInventorSpot.com: * * * * * Innovations for the Environmentalists and the Gardeners Did you know that over 30% of landfill waste could be composted and provide valuable nutrients to plants, but instead the waste is thrown in the trash and sent to landfills? Whether you're an environmentalist, a parent wanting a better world for her children, an avid gardener or just curious, turning waste into compost has become easier for all of us to do. Compost is a mixture of various decaying organic substances, such as dead leaves, cut grass, kitchen scraps or manure, used for fertilizing soil. Many composting products have been made and continue to be improved upon for the kitchen, the restroom as well as the yard. Tha...
6 Fashion Tips for Gardeners
0000-00-00 00:00:00
Clothes and skin cream are far removed from potting out your begonias, or digging a trench for a line of potatoes. But the clothes you wear are important for your protection in the garden. Here are six simple but effective solutions to various gardening hazards... 1. Starting from the top, you need to protect your head. Body heat escapes through the head and in the cold weather a warm hat should be worn. Knit yourself a 'gardening crazy' hat or buy a simple woollen hat on the high street. And in the summer, even more attention should be paid to the head. The sun's rays are not only hot but they actually burn you. We all know this but how easy it is to forget when you want to soak up the sun after months of grey or cold weather. Invest in a cool sunhat. Not only will it help protect you from sunstroke, it will also protect against the drying out of your hair and skin. 2. Keep one old comfortable jacket or short coat, preferably with fairly large pockets, especially for the garden....
