Keyhole Gardening
2008-07-17 02:33:00
Spotted this over on Monkeyfister, the keyhole garden.  An innovative idea that could help you grow your own food. Some observations: I wonder if you could pry the cellphones and Ipods away from Americans and get a happy level of participation as shown in this video?  Somehow, I sort of doubt it. The rusty cans was interesting, ...
Gardening A Pastime Continued For Centuries
2008-06-09 04:50:00
Plants were here long before people or animals were. While earliest man supplemented his staple diet of animal meat with gathered nuts and berries, people of later ages learned to cultivate crops to feed more people more reliably, leading to the more diverse diet we enjoy today. Because man’s new knowledge of plant propagation freed a great deal of time he had previously used for survival, he began to find many more uses for plants. One of those uses, gardening, filled the need both for decoration and recreation. A prime example of this pursuit is seen in one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Gardening as a pastime continued throughout the centuries. Asian cultures spent hundreds of years developing plant-based cures for diseases. Plants and herbs formed the entire basis for Chinese medicine. In addition to utilizing plants for their curative properties, Asian cultures revered them for their beauty, as well. Both peonies and maples, found...

2008-05-31 04:21:00
These irises only bloom for a couple of weeks, but they sure are gorgeous. Our garden is full of them. Some are so heavy now that they are keeling over. Rajeev decapitated one of them gardening, and another while playing badminton, but the rest are surviving. Here's another surprise: a bleeding heart. I didn't know it was planted in a pot on the patio, until suddenly in March it burst out of the dirt and grew about a foot a week.

Gardening Leave: Chris Bower
2008-05-30 23:43:00
How often have you wished you could start fresh; have a new life? We all have at some point in our lives. This is a story of a forced start over. Unlike a straight redundancy ?gardening leave? is a quaint English expression that takes being laid off to a new level. As a Department Manager in a large Financial Establishment Chris Bower?s narrator is told to take six months gardening leave meaning he is on call if they should ever need him but they are not going to pay his salary except as a lump sum settlement at the end of the rest period. As a Manager he gets to keep the perks of the job, the company car for instance until the final severance.Bower?s book is written in the first person narration making it feel autobiographical and so we share in the recovery from the heart attack, the despair of being unemployed, the joy of discovering a lost hobby that becomes a salvation and the road to recovery. We laugh at the transition from Mercedes to Mini and feel the elation of new found l...

World Naked Gardening Day
2008-05-27 22:14:00
Darn, missed the May 3rd celebration of World Naked Gardening Day again. I just can’t think about gardening when there’s still snow on the ground, I suppose. This incredible weather, though, prompted me to check the date - and I suppose as with many special days, celebrating late is better than not celebrating at all (I must remember that anniversaries aren’t included in that category - especially the first anniversary). Gardening in comfort, with no laundry to do and no tan lines - who can argue about the logic of all that? (today’s photos won’t be gettin’ posted! )

Forget-Me-Not Nursery in Indian, Alaska
2008-05-26 10:00:00
I have this tradition that started four or five years ago where each spring my mom and I head south to look for some spring seedlings. We're like pilgrims making our annual trip to Plant-Mecca and spring wouldn't be spring without the trip to Indian and Forget-Me-Not Nursery.Indian is a tiny town--maybe just a settlement, it's hard to tell--south of Anchorage along Cook Inlet. The drive down there is part of the prettiest, most scenic, drive in the entire world. I?ve seen pretty before and seriously, the stretch of road from Anchorage to Girdwood on a spring day is about as much beauty as you could expect in one place--just gorgeous. In fact, the trip is only partly about going to get some flowers, it's about enjoying the sunshine and the scenery and basking in the thought of the coming summer. But Mom couldn?t go this year (ironically she can?t go to Indian because she?s in India?ha!) so I got the treat of my sister Melissa to keep me company and we made a morning of it, enjoyi...

Solar Garden Lights - The Happy Marriage of Gardening and Renewable Energy
2008-05-14 04:46:00
Solar Garden Lights are becoming of age; their application is almost through puberty. Solar Powered Garden Lighting is reaching maturity. And no wonder first of all they are a sign of environmental awareness, and secondly solar lights are very convenient. In the old days we were struggling with the wiring in our garden, and especially grid connected systems in an outdoor environment are an accident waiting to happen if not maintained well. Placing additional lights was a good afternoons work, or you had to hire a specialized electrician to do it for you. Solar powered lights are an example of user friendliness, stick them in the ground, and place them wherever you need lighting. Do choose a spot that receives enough sunlight during the day, switch them on. Installation job done! The advantages of solar powered lights are obvious, no wiring, low or non-existent maintenance, and environmental friendly. They are especially the way to go if you are into organically or green gardening. ...

Today I'm welcoming guest poster Meredith from Like Merchant Ships whose wonderful blog is full of helpful tips and support for frugal, economic living. We're swapping blogs for the day: she's posting here and I'm over at her place posting my own thoughts about creative frugal living . . . come on by and say hi!***Nothing makes me want to splurge more than spring nurseries full of gorgeous green plants! Luckily, it doesn't cost much to spruce up the back door using things we already own. Our back entrance looks so cold and sterile without color. (Speaking of which, why haven't I painted these doors yet?)This fall, I budgeted half an hour for a fast-and-dirty transformation. I bought two mums ($8 total), washed the doormats, swept, and consolidated the half-dead plants from around the house. I moved the cherry tomato from the yard so it could anchor the group of smaller pots. I also angled the grill to break up the straight line of the house. I consolidated the outdoor toys in ...

I planted herbs in a pot - my herb dish garden! Not only did I tackle my herb mini-garden, I also transplanted a lot of the anthuriums (on the pots that were drying and needed to be transplanted). Now I am excited to see them revive and bloom!I am thankful to Tackle It Tuesday because it motivates me to do the chores the fun way (fun means I take photos and blog about it :). Creating A Companion Garden
2008-05-06 11:00:00
This week has been great! We had a four day break since there was a public holiday on Thursday (Labour Day) and the whole family has been home. We got out our rubber gloves, our guide to Great Garden Companions and all the garden tools... it was time to start digging! We have been working for 3 days and I must say it is so exciting and very rewarding! After day 2 it looked like this:And after another day of digging and planting, it now looks like this:I must confess, planting seedlings and young plants is so much more rewarding than planting seeds!Although we have planted seeds among the young plants, we will have to have patience and wait to see what it will look like then ;)The whole idea of Companion Gardens is to garden in a natural, biological and environmentally friendly way. No chemicals to get rid of bugs! And of course choosing companions for each type of plant is a vital part of all this. Each crop is grouped with other crops of the same botanical family or according to nut...

Composting Is Key To Successful Organic Gardening
2008-04-27 04:22:00
Compost is a great tool for any gardener. It helps your garden hold just the right amount of water, makes it the right texture for optimal plant growth, and provides it with beneficial natural organisms. While you can buy several different types of compost products at a retail store or gardening center, it's much cheaper to make your own compost. Not only will you save money, you also get the added benefit of knowing that you're not just throwing your yard waste away; it's actually doing something beneficial for your garden and for your health. Before getting started on building your compost pile, you should know what to put in it. To get good compost you need four elements: carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and water. Grass clippings from your yard provide the carbon. Nitrogen comes from leaves in the fall. To make sure your pile gets water, build it somewhere where it will be rained on; just be sure it's not completely soaked with water. Lastly, you can add oxygen simply by mixing the...
It is time for a new hobby: Greenhouse gardening
2008-04-24 16:01:00
For people who would like to do more gardening but live in a short growing season area, a hobby greenhouse is the answer. A hobby greenhouse is not large enough to produce vegetables or flowers on a commercial basis. It will, however, give you a place for a tomato plant or two and some fresh greens even if you live in the northern regions. Greenhouse enthusiasts even have their own association, called the Hobby Greenhouse Association, which publishes a quarterly magazine. The organization also sponsers events and helps individuals connect to get help with the aspect of gardening that they are interested in, whether it's growing cacti or saving seeds. If you are in the market for a hobby greenhouse, there are several types on the market. The smallest type is not large enough to walk into and must be accessed from the outside. It resembles an old-fashioned phone booth made all of glass and outfitted with shelves. This type is designed to fit as many plants as possible in as small a...
Improve Organic Gardening Using Composting
2008-04-24 15:59:00
Building up sustainable soil for organic gardening starts right after the garden soil testing has been completed. The testing of the soil helps to identify the additional fertilizers and conditioners that can be added. When attempting to garden organically, testing, maintaining and improving the soil is a constant process and one that is well worth the effort, according to those who advocate organic farming and gardening. Creating sustainable soil for gardening organically means that you have to be able to replenish the topsoil of the garden. One of the best substances to have for keeping the soil rich and healthy enough for an organic garden is a good supply of compost. In addition to compost, it is good to have enzymes, earthworms, and beneficial microbes available to add into the soil mixture as well. In most cases, when the garden bed has been established with great quality soil that is able to support and sustain organic gardening, it can then be maintained by simply adding h...
