Review: Container Gardens 50 Recipes for Year-Round Gardening
2009-11-11 04:17:00 Last week a representative from Crown Publishing Group - Random House, Inc. offered to send me Container Gardens: 50 Recipes for Year-Round Gardening by P. Allen Smith to review. Since I try to include ideas for container gardening on this blog because many Chicagoans live in apartments or small spaces I agreed to take a look. What I thought was a small book on container gardens turned out to be a collection of container garden ideas printed (both sides) on tabbed cards that you can take with you to the garden center or nursery when picking out plants for your container gardens....
Wentworth Gardens struggles to bridge the gap between neighborhoods, gangs
2009-11-04 21:52:00 Beatrice Harris, resident leader at Wentworth GardensBeatrice Harris calls everybody baby. "How ya doin', baby?" "Hey, baby." "Don't worry about it, baby."She's earned the right. As one of the matriarchs of Chicago's Wentworth Gardens, she says she's had a tough job in the last few years, trying to make one community out of a divided complex. For years, Wentworth, a small housing development directly south of the White Sox stadium, served as a "relocation resource" in the Plan for Transformation. As Chicago tore down the massive high rises that were Wentworth's neighbors, like Stateway Gardens and the Robert Taylor Homes, Wentworth took in many of those displaced by the demolition. The low-rise development is a patchwork quilt of families from...

Independent Garden Center Show: Small Space Gardens
2009-08-20 08:30:00 Some gardening products from the Independent Garden Center Show 2009 to make gardening in urban and small spaces, like balconies, decks and patios easier. While they make looks like they are better suited for utilitarian gardens, like vegetable gardens, there's no reason why these couldn't be used to grow purely ornamental gardens. The images above is of the GardenSoxx by Filtrexx which makes square foot gardening pretty easy. About two to three plants can be grown in the organic landscape and garden planters. They don't have to be used strictly for square foot gardening, the website has a couple of videos demonstrating their versatility. My first thought when I came across these is that they would be great for a roof...

Protecting Container Gardens From Squirrels
2009-07-22 19:33:00 A reader, CCWriter, asked for advice on protecting container gardens from squirrels with the catch that the advice couldn't be cruel. I don't really have a squirrel problem. In the past four years there have only been two incidents of plant damage involving squirrels at my Chicago garden. They rarely come down from the telephone wires around here because of the stray cats and dogs. So, I turned to fellow garden bloggers from the Chicagoland area and asked for their advice in dealing with squirrels and container gardens. Here is what they suggested:...

Vacant Lot Gardens in North Lawndale
2009-07-15 19:05:00 Here's a video I came across today that I wanted to share immediately after I saw it. It follows the North Lawndale Greening Committee during one of their annual community garden tours and features Velma Johnson, a pioneer in greening efforts in the North Lawndale neighborhood. North Lawndale Greening Committee from Rebecca Parrish on Vimeo. What an inspiration. One of my favorite parts is Regina Cook-Glanton at the 4:14 mark talking about her childhood home that is now a garden. It is amazing to see what this group of neighbors manage to accomplish gardening in empty lots, especially when you consider the obstacles they have to overcome. I also came across this paper [PDF] from 1999 by an anthropology intern with...
Gardens Cafe @ 1 Utama New Wing
2009-04-26 15:08:00 Listening to:She Is Love by ParachuteI Kissed A Girl by Katy PerryThis is so long ago, I know. But, it's not too late to post since the cafe is still there where it is.It was like what? Last month I think. Man I can't remember. We were out watching Marley & Me and this was after the movie. It's the rather recent Gardens Cafe @ 1 Utama (new wing). I'd have to say I love the way the place is arranged and decorated. It's suppose to look like, well, it's name of course. So naturally, there's leaves everywhere. Besides being a cafe, it is also a shop. You can buy stuff from there and inside it leads you to a casual wear shop where clothes for both you females and males out there. We were pretty much interested with the buffet but it seems that it's a tea time buffet where pastries and mini cakes are served. I think that it's pretty lame since it means that you can only go for that during tea time when you feel like munching on some pastry snacks and chit chat away with your fr...

San Antonio Japanese Gardens
2009-02-25 00:10:00 Chances are, you'd be asking for the Sunken Gardens if you're looking for this place, since that is what others call this Japanese Garden in San Antonio, Texas. The reason for the term is because the gardens are located inside an abandoned limestone quarry. If you can't find the place, ask for "Chinese Tea Garden Gate". It's what they used in the registrations.Post from: FanFic San Antonio Japanese Gardens

Tiny Terrariums, Mini Gardens and Victorian Wardian Cases
2008-09-03 10:01:00 I'm switching from crafts temporarily (storing up energy for the fall-winter holiday season) and for the next month or so will be publishing all sorts of helpful indoor gardening tips to ease from the pleasures of growing things outside to the joy of growing something inside.I'm not sure what appeals to me so much about tiny things but it doesn't matter if we're talking about puppies or poppies small is cute. Not only are terrariums and miniature gardens the solution to small spaces and apartment living but they can be a beautiful addition to your interior design. You don't have to have a fancy antique Victorian Wardian case such as you see above, even a large vase, Mason jar or clear glass cookie jar works well. The key is to plan well.1. Choose your container. I like the Anchor Hocking brand of glass containers they often sell at Walmart because they're decorative and inexpensive but think of any glass container or even a piece of lava rock on a shallow dish is a beautiful ...

unnel Your Gardens Through the System
2008-05-31 04:53:00 Many people are able to appreciate a beautiful garden and if you are looking to make your garden just as beautiful as everyone else's then you should definitely do yourself a favor and find out as much as you can about a number of different things. You need to know about what grows in your area and what diseases are an what works in your area and what does not. You also need to figure out where the sun falls in relation to your home and how to maximize the space you want to use for your garden or if you should move yours gardening space to another area of your yard. Plants In A Container Is A Start While many times people will begin their garden in their own yard and just try to grow things from their own seeds, oftentimes one of the better things people can do is to use containers. If you introduce your front yard to plants from a container that you are able to plant and which have already sprouted up this may cut out a season or two in your gardening trajectory. You need to have ...

Perfumer?s gardens
2008-05-18 18:23:00 I am walking behind Serge Lutens, the creative director of Christian Dior in the 1960s and 1970s, and perfumer to Shiseido since the 1980s, as he shows me around his garden in Marrakech. Immaculately clad, despite the 30°C Moroccan heat, in a tailored black suit, Lutens, 66, occasionally darts off the path into the dappled greenery, emerging minutes later with a flower or seeds for me to smell. 'This garden has a personality that doesn't want to expose itself,' he says in his thoughtful, poetic manner. 'Except for the palm trees, everything else grows in the shade. The garden and I are similar. I wouldn't like to be too public and this is not a public garden. Every time I walk around here I discover something I don't know, because the garden grows itself.' ? From Grow your own perfume in the Telegraph, in which columnist Liz Hancock looks at gardens grown by Serge Lutens, George Dodd of Scent Systems, Edmond Roudnitksa and Michel Roudnitska.

Free Amsterdam: Gardens, art, ferries, conversation
2008-05-05 17:34:00 Looking for ways to save some euros while visiting Amsterdam? Here are five suggestions: Try some flower power. Visiting the masterpieces at the Rijksmuseum will set you back €10, but the baroque and renaissance gardens behind it are free to stroll. Delight in the fountains, statues, and the carefully coiffed hedges and plants. The gardens are open daily from 9 am to 6 pm. Baroque gardens are closed on the weekends. (Note: The Rijksmuseum is undergoing extensive renovations that are scheduled to last until 2010. Until then, visitors may visit a scaled down “best of” collection entitled ”Th-e Masterpieces.”) Pick up a passport to paintings. Speaking of the Rijksmuseum, we’re flying high about the joint venture between the museum and Amsterdam’s Schipol Airport. The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam Schipol, an art space at the airport maintained by the museum, offers annual exhibits free of charge. This year, an impressive collection of Van ...

Singapore En bloc uproar at Bayshore Park, Mandarin Gardens
2008-05-05 08:08:00 Singapore En bloc uproar at Bayshore Park, Mandarin Gardens Sales committees rein in estate councils, irking owners who want to upkeep homes By Jessica Cheam TALL ORDER: With $2 billion each needed to buy Mandarin Gardens (above) or Bayshore Park, analysts say their collective sales are unlikely in the current market. — ST FILE PHOTOS  THE market for en bloc sales may have gone dead quiet, but the issue is still raising a ruckus at two of Singapore’s most iconic condominium developments in the East. Sales committees pushing for the collective sales of Mandarin Gardens and Bayshore Park have been accused of trying to control the management councils running these estates and voting down proposals to upgrade estate facilities. The committees, made up of residents who are pro-en bloc, have denied the charges. Still, things came to a head last Sunday at both condos’ respective annual general meetings (AGM), which lasted up to 10 hours each. Sales committees are ad...
Singapore Mandarin Gardens’ management panel steps down over enbloc d
2008-05-02 19:07:00 Singapore Mandarin Gardens’ management panel steps down over enbloc disputes By Timothy Ouyang, SINGAPORE : Enbloc sales woes and unhappiness at Mandarin Gardens have left the condominium without a management committee for the past week. The previous committee refused to be re-nominated for elections at its Annual General Meeting last Sunday. Since then, no one is taking charge of the day-to-day management at the condominium on Siglap Road. Channel NewsAsia understands that the entire management committee stepped down because of disputes with the estate’s enbloc sales committee. Apparently, the enbloc sales committee pushed through resolutions which are unfavourable to the entire estate, through its control of proxy votes. When contacted, the Strata Titles Board said such cases are rare, but it is unable to do anything at this point. Under the law, all residents are jointly responsible for any liabilities incurred by the condominium during this period. - CNA/ms Source : ...

Water Wise Plants Rescue Parched Gardens
2008-04-23 04:17:00 "Drought is as common as thunderstorms and hot summer days," says Dr. Don Wilhite, founder of the national Drought Mitigation Center in Omaha, Nebraska. "It's part of all climates," Wilhite continues. "The key is being prepared." Unfortunately, the drought in the Southeast is predicted to last well into 2008 in more than three-fourths of the region. The good news is gardening is still allowed in most areas. The key is in knowing what to plant- and where. The water shortages in many parts of the Southeast have resulted in imposed water restrictions, and these water bans have communicated misconceptions that landscaping is non-essential. But, for Mary Kay Woodworth, vice-president of the Georgia Urban Agricultural Council, landscapes are essential in protecting our delicate eco-system. "Lawns, ground covers and vegetation are crucial to managing ground water and assist in retention, filtration and purification of a watershed," Woodworth asserts. Today's consumers want an eco-wise g...
