Is the Federal Fuel Tax About to be Cut?
2011-08-04 20:36:00
It what will amount to an absolutely asinine and incredibly stupid move should it happen, some members of Congress may oppose the renewal of the federal gasoline and diesel fuel tax when it is set to expire this fall. This tax generates revenue which is used to keep our highways from falling apart. Considering our ...
How the New Fuel Economy Standards Could Kill The Economy
2011-07-26 21:25:00
I?ll be upfront with this, I don?t believe that the White House?s soon to be proposed higher fuel economy standards are going to kill the economy. I just don?t think it?s realistic. In fact, I tend to be on the other side of the argument and believe the new standards would create jobs, largely due ...
Ads Against Raising Fuel Economy Standards Scrapped
2011-07-21 18:52:00
After several days of posturing and, quite frankly, whining about the Obama administration?s proposed new fuel economy standards, the Alliance of Automobile Manufactures has decided not to air its radio campaign aimed at getting the public behind less substantial fuel economy increases. (Just a note in case you didn?t know ? the new standards, which ...
Michigan Lawmakers Prepare to Fight Possible Proposed Fuel Economy Standard
2011-07-21 03:34:00

Fuel Economy vs. Fuel Taxes ? Which Will Do More?
2011-07-20 03:14:00
Here’s an interesting question: which is more likely to make you use less fuel, forcing you to buy a more fuel efficient vehicle or forcing you to pay a much, much higher fuel tax? This is sort of a relevant question because there is news that the Obama administration is considering raising fuel economy standards ...

High Gas Prices Deters Speeders, Says UK Survey
2010-10-22 10:09:00
Discouraging patterns of high-speed driving, public education campaigns have been the first stage of maintaining safe vehicle speeds. As we know, these preventive measures are not enough to completely change the situations on streets and highways. Police speed traps, photo radar and even airplane surveillance over highways are deployed to catch the velocity seekers red-handed ...

3 Surefire Ways to Combat Rising Gas Prices
2009-01-14 20:36:00
I have heard the rumblings of many of you in Readerland about the recent spike in gasoline prices. In fact it's all I seem to hear about lately. But at least it keeps you from rumbling about the infrequency of my columnsand articles. Nonetheless, I have decided to try to help you get through this crisis by generously providing: 3 Ways to Combat Rising Gas Prices!1. Don't Drive Your CarThis is, of course, the most obvious solution. If you never take the old Plymouth out the driveway, then it won't matter that at current gas prices it takes $125 to fill up the 30 gallon gas tank, or that you only get about 2.51 miles to the gallon. If you never drive, you could care less.Of course, I know what you're going to say. "But Tim, I have places I need to go-like work. And the kids have school and soccer practice. And then there's grocery shopping and yoga lesssons and dinner at the Richardsons and blah blah blah and...." Ok, I get the point. Not everyone can sit around the house writing ...
Gas Prices Rise at the Pump for First Time in Three Months
2009-01-06 23:19:00
The conflict in the Middle East has prompted a surge in gasoline prices across the US. Despite the rise, gas prices are still down $1.44 cents from this time last year, when a gallon of regular cost $3.00. So much of it depends on if you think the glass is half full…or half empty. I’ve always been one to believe that the glass is half full. As long as gas prices stay low enough that everyday Americans can afford the cost to get to work and back, it’s a good thing. It will be interesting to see how the conflict in the Middle East turns out and how the transitional of power here in the US effects gasoline prices moving forward into the spring and summer of this year.

Cold Weather & Gas Prices
2008-11-11 00:57:00
These thing aren’t intertwined or anything. I just didn’t want to do two posts. Cold Weather I don’t know if I’ve ever mentioned it or not, but I’m a cold weather person. When the temps start to dip into the 40’s, that’s when I’m happy. Today’s been a cold rainy day and I’m ...
Buffalo Gas Prices
2008-11-07 22:30:00
The NYS Attorney General should start investigating why Buffalo and WNY pay not only the highest gas prices in the state, but in the lower 48 states. Sales taxes aren't the reason, nor is our location. I don't buy that for a minute. To explain the price ...
Are Gas Prices the reason the economy is bad?
2008-11-05 14:20:00
The housing market and bad banking has been blamed for the bad economy. I think the fast rising and inflated gas prices paid a big part in the down fall of it all. What are your thought on this subject?
Gas Prices
2008-10-13 00:39:00
I don’t know what they are in other parts of the country, but around here gas is down to $2.75/gallon and $2.85/gallon for no ethanol. That’s over a dollar drop in, what, 3-4 months. When it was around $4/gallon you couldn’t watch a newscast without them mentioning it every 5 minutes. And ...
High gas prices are good for the US
2008-08-28 15:21:00
Okay, before taking this the wrong way, hear me out. They can't help you get a loan for gas prices, though. Sorry.
2008-08-14 17:13:00
Everyone needs a car-- which means everyone needs an Auto Loan, because saving up for a car is tough; if you wait until you have $5,000, $10,000, or $20,000, it'll be a long time before you're driving around town in that new sedan.Trying to get an auto loan in the past was tough -- you either had to go around to various banks and waste a bunch of time, or go into the dealer and test drive a car and pick it out and then hope that you get approved for credit, and hope that the dealer gets you a loan through someone that's reputable and that your interest rate and payments will be okay, all while you're sitting there making small talk with a car salesman and drinking that terrible coffee. That's all in the past: ApexAutoLoan.com now has the ability to get you a car loan online in just minutes. No driving around. No terrible coffee. No salesmen (until you go to get the car; they can't help you with that.)ApexAutoLoan.com can even help with Bad Credit Car Loans -- so good credit ...

Democrats Try To Tie High Gas Prices To Republicans
2008-06-30 23:02:00
Some Democrats from the House will have found themselves a Bush impersonator for a radio ad that tries to blame Republicans for the high price of gas in the country. Really? The national average today is over $4/gallon. In January 2007, when Democrats took control of Congress, it was around $2.20/gallon. ...
90% of Americans See Hardships With High Gas Prices
2008-06-30 13:03:00
Photo by Saintbridge Want to be the nation’s hero? Figure out a way that we can solve the high gasoline prices that have 9 in 10 Americans saying have caused them financial hardship. E85 ethanol might be one solution. Hydrogen could be another once fueling stations are built. Whatever we do, we need to do it quickly. The airlines are already near financial ruin.  Our automobile manufacturers are suffering.  Our credit is crunched — and many cannot afford to fill up their cars without borrowing from their credit card. Our economy is heading toward a 70s-style malaise with high energy prices and stagnant incomes. What do you think will end up being the solution to our nation’s energy problems? Could the answer be more domestic drilling, bio fuels such as E85 ethanol and bio diesel, hydrogen, hybrids and plug-ins, or some combination of the above? Which will be the longest term solution to America’s energy crisis? If you were elected president, what would you ...
Offset high gas prices by turning your car into billboard
2008-06-10 18:41:00
Gas prices suck and the job market is almost as bad, but a little uglification of your car or truck can net you some big bucks. Alternative marketing companies that want to plaster your car with “tasteful” advertisements are paying hundreds of dollars to the right people, but chances are you aren’t one of them. There is a reason you don’t see many of these driving billboards, because the companies with the money are looking for people who travel a lot and park their car in interesting places.

The Grand Illusion on Gas Prices

Gas Prices Finally Impact US Car Sales
2008-06-06 15:07:00
More on the better side of record gas pricesFor some reason pickup trucks and SUVs have rooted themselves in American culture. Apparently they serve as symbols for strength, power, durability and more values that are held dear to many Americans.I?ve read somewhere the pickup serves as the modern horse, keeping the old west?s heritage alive. With all due respect to culture it seems more and more Americans are finding it hard to continue maintaining these gas eating monsters with gas prices constantly rising.Americans save on gas by switching to economy carsAccording to Reuters US auto sales tumbled in many as consumers spurned pickup trucks and SUVs in the face of record gasoline prices, driving General Motors Corp (GM.N), Ford Motor Co (F.N) and Chrysler LLC to double-digit declines.Furthermore, Japan?s Honda Motor outsold Chrysler for the first time to emerge as the new No. 4 U.S auto-maker with Toyota closing the gap on General Motors.Record gas prices apparently sent Ford?s sales...
Strip Clubs hurt by high gas prices
2008-06-06 14:26:00
Strip clubs in the Jacksonville, Florida area are feeling the pinch of the tanking economy. A recent story from Jacksonville?s NBC-TV affiliate tells the story:The rising prices of gas, food and travel are having a major effect on the adult entertainment industry on the First Coast. The typical lunch crowd at Sinsations has dwindled to just two guys and a couple of sandwiches. It's the same story at gentlemen's clubs all across the First Coast."People just don't have the money to go out, they don't have the money to buy a drink, they certainly don't have the money to spend on an entertainer," said the manager of Emperor's Gentlemen's Club Joe Serafini.Serafini says he has been forced to lay off staff, reduce prices and limit hours to turn a profit. Managers at Sinsations say their income has dropped by roughly 35% in recent months. "I have to go to other places to try to make the money," said an exotic dancer known as Storm. "[I've gone from] about a grand a week, down to a c...

GM Throws In The Towel To High Gas Prices
2008-06-03 15:25:00
Posted By:Phil LeBeauThe plant closings are prudent. If gas remains at high levels, there will be fewer and fewer buying trucks and SUVs. Sales are down 17.3 % this year, and may not get much better the rest of this year. With 4 fewer plants, GM will save roughly a billion dollars. More importantly, it will reduce the number of SUVs sitting on dealer lots in the future.     Read More Topics:Alternative Energy | Energy | Economy (U.S.) | Economy (Global) | Automobile IndustrySectors:Oil and Gas | Automobiles and PartsCompanies:General Motors CorpMEDIA:PHOTO |   VIDEOPermalink

How Gas Prices Could Effect Urban Markets
2008-06-02 22:35:00
Prior to the introduction of the automobile most people either lived in large urban areas or small town farming communities. Starting after World War II, cheap gas sent families out of the urban areas into the suburbs. Throughout the sixties and seventies many major cities throughout the United States saw a steep reduction of total population in their cities. Detroit and Philadelphia were examples that were ranked top in population and over a short period of time saw a dramatic fall as large influential suburban hubs attracted the population. Cities began to stabilize and in some cases grow over the last ten years as they began to transform themselves as new urban living opportunities including live-work type homes, new condos and attractive apartment living with amentias opened up. A younger population along with baby boomers ready to experience a new life after kids has found urban living attractive once again. So how will gas prices affect urban living? Will families find it to...
As Gas Prices Escalate, Worries About a Recession Turn Into Fears of Inflat
2008-06-02 19:30:00
As the post-Memorial Day hangover lingers, and $4 per gallon gasoline becomes a national reality, expect more and more daily energy prognostications. Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS) already is on record for $200-a-barrel oil. As you all know, our own Keith Fitz-Gerald - Money Morning?s investment director - has projected a crude-oil price of $225 a barrel. Do I hear $250? What about $5 a gallon gasoline by July 4th? Sometimes, these daily price gyrations take on lives of their own, but at the end of the day, the basic laws of supply and demand always work themselves out. The upcoming week?s hectic economic calendar…
Schools Feel the Clutches of Higher Gas Prices
2008-06-02 19:01:00
Like all of us, schools around the nation are feeling the effects of high gas prices. As but one example, Nash-Rocky Mount schools in North Carolina burned through about $729,000 in fuel in the last fiscal year ? nearly twice as much as in the previous year. In an effort to cope, schools are coming up with a range of strategies--all of which involve cutting services. In Minnesota, for instance, one district plans to eliminate classes every Monday to come up with the extra $65,000 it needs to fill its buses' tanks. The superintendent commented "I know $65,000 may not sound like a lot, but it's more than one teaching position,"
W.Va. Groans Under Gas Prices
2008-06-02 14:38:00
The Associated Press' Tom Breen highlights efforts by one industry group, West Virginians for Better Transportation, to aid the state's main roadbuilding and repair fund amid rising fuel costs."West Virginia drivers can now log onto http://www.keepwvmoving.org to calculate their daily, weekly, monthly and yearly state gasoline tax bill," Breen writes. "The group worries that high prices are keeping people off the road, which means lower tax revenues. The problem is that the state Road Fund, which pays for maintenance, paving and repairs on state roads and bridges, relies on gas taxes for about 60 percent of its revenue."AP reported earlier that "county school systems need an extra $5 million to keep their 3,000 buses rolling in the wake of record diesel prices, and Gov. Joe Manchin might ask lawmakers for the money this summer during a special session."And the Charleston Daily Mail noted previously that "overall fuel tax revenues for West Virginia have been growing at a steady p...
