Voyage To Southern Ocean Aims To Study Air-sea Fluxes Of Greenhouse Gases
2008-03-03 06:13:00 Scientists will soon embark from Punta Arenas, Chile, on the tip of South America, to spend 42 days amid the high winds and waves of the Southern Ocean। Here they hope to make groundbreaking measurements to explain how huge fluxes of climate-affecting gases move between atmosphere and sea, and vice-versa.The cruise, which departs Feb. 28, should provide important information on how the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide moves between the ocean and atmosphere, said the cruise's chief scientist, David Ho of Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. Comprising 30 percent of global seas, "the Southern Ocean is a source of great uncertainty," he said. "So it's potentially important to our understanding of the global system."Humans put about 6 billion metric tons of CO2 into the air each year, mainly by fossil-fuel burning and deforestation. About a third is thought to be absorbed by oceans, and a third by plants or other components of land. The rest stays in the air--much o...

Putting a Bounty on Greenhouse Gases
2008-01-31 17:26:00 As far as putting a stop to the growing concern on greenhouse gases, it can be done by penalizing people from their continued disregard for the safety of people today. It can be done and through proper implementation of guidelines and modes of violation, people may become weary of the greenhouse gas issues that we are all complaining about. Once these new ordinances or policies are in place, we may even see a drastic decline in greenhouse gas problems we experience today. Tax implementations on them are sure to make people be more cautious afterwards. “Greenhouse gases are treated today as though they can be produced and emitted without any cost. Green taxes should be introduced for industries and consumers to establish a visible price for carbon dioxide as a way of slowing the growth of - and then reducing - emissions,” said Glen Hodgson, Senior Vice-President and Chief Economist. “A national GHG tax system should be designed to be fiscally neutral through cuts...

Fertilizers for biofuel crops could increase greenhouse gases
2007-09-23 15:21:00 We know that producing fuels from plant material is probably beneficial from the perspective of carbon dioxide emissions. After all the plants are absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as they grow rather than just releasing carbon that was trapped in the ground. The overall energy equation is more problematic at least with current feed-stocks like corn, canola and soy. Depending on the processes used, it may well take more energy to grow and process the crops than you get out. As we move toward cellulosic and algae based feed-stocks, the balance should improve dramatically. However, there is another concern with biofuels. The current crops that are being used require huge amounts of nitrogen-based fertilizers to produce. It turns out that a significant portion of the nitrogen in the fertilizers is actually consumed by bacteria in the ground and then given off as nitrous oxide. Previous estimates had placed this at about two percent of the nitrogen, but new studies place that...

Conservative Party plan for Greenhouse Gases in Canada
2007-05-03 00:00:00 This is a guest post by chrisale. A major policy speech introducing the new plan by the Conservative Party of Canada to reduce Canadian GHG emissions has been leaked to the Opposition Liberals... and in an attempt to avoid influencing the markets before they open today (Wednesday), the crux of the plan has been released. The CBC reports: The speech says that by 2020, the government hopes it will have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 150 million tonnes. It also says the government will explore emission credit trading with the U.S. and Mexico, something they have been reluctant to embrace in the past. "The Tory government intends to stop the rise of greenhouse gases in three to five years". [break] So... this begs numbers. Ethanol Gases Could Kill
2007-04-20 04:33:00 A US research was revealed several days ago regarding the presently super famous ethanol gas that is rumored to soon fill the fuel parts of the vehicles in the future. And one very interesting statement is: "Our results show that a high blend of ethanol poses an equal or greater risk to public health than gasoline, which already causes significant health damage." This is what the Stanford University?s atmospheric scientist, the lead author of the study - Mark Jacobson, has to say after they found out that the ethanol can be harmful to humans. You heard that right guys, according to the study, the new fuel can contribute more illnesses to individuals or, in more dangerous cases, it can even cause respiratory diseases. And you are the very unlucky one, you get to experience death. The study also identified that the eco-friendly fuel is even worst than gasoline itself in terms of damaging human health.According to the Environmental Science & Technology, if most of the trucks and car...
