Gastric Bypass Tool: Patient Growth Stages
2008-12-27 08:07:00
Gastric Bypass Tool: Patient Growth Stages was written by Kaye Bailey from livingafterwls.comWeight Loss Surgery (WLS) is referred to in bariatric medicine as a "tool", only a tool to help morbidly obese regain health through massive weight loss. What is seldom mentioned is that "Tool" causes patients to experience four phases of growth: Conception, Infancy, Adolescence and Maturity. Along the road through those four phases are lots of bumps and bruises, but also many celebrations and successes.Conception begins when patients consider surgery as a treatment for morbid obesity. They may need to lose weight for health reasons, to restore quality of life or improve diminished self-esteem.Conception is followed by birth, an event conducted by the surgeon who partitions off most of the stomach creating a pocket or pouch that will hold one ounce of food. In most gastric bypass procedures the digestive system is re-routed to bypass the intestine and shortcut to the bowel. This prevents too...
Gastric Bypass Is Easy Weight Loss: Changing Public Perception
2008-12-21 08:07:00
Gastric Bypass Is Easy Weight Loss: Changing Public Perception was written by Kaye Bailey from livingafterwls.comIt?s no secret the public at large perceives gastric bypass to be the lazy person?s cure for obesity. In fact some are so indignant about this medical procedure they passionately take a soapbox and criticize the surgery which will be performed on nearly 500,000 Americans this year.Uncensored criticism is one of the most painful things a recovering morbidly obese person faces when they have WLS. Unlike other illnesses obesity is seen to be self-inflicted which allows others to forsake their manners to openly diagnose and treat the fat person. Any obese person will cite an incident where they?ve been told "Eat less, exercise more." We know the slogan and for most dieters the slogan isn?t working very well.Losing weight is never easy. NEVER. Not with Jenny Craig. Not with Weight Watchers or Low-Carb or diet-du-jour. Losing weight is not easy even with weight loss surgery. Wh...
What To Expect After Gastric Bypass Surgery
2008-12-12 08:07:00
What To Expect After Gastric Bypass Surgery was written by Eddie Tobey from e-gastricbypasssurgery.comMost- patients recover after gastric bypass surgery without complications. Typically, those who undergo the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedure, which involves stapling of the stomach and bypassing the first part of the small intestines, have a hospital stay of two to four days. Other gastric bypass procedures may have shorter or longer recovery times.Aside from common risks associated with surgeries like infection, after gastric bypass surgery, patients must be more sensitive to their nutritional intake. Since the surgery bypasses a portion of the small intestine responsible for much of the body?s nutrient absorption, patients may face problems like lack of iron (anemia), lack of calcium leading to osteoporosis, lack of vitamin B12 and more. With nutritional counseling and supplements, these effects can be lessened greatly. After gastric bypass surgery, there is also the possibility t...
Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Surgery
2008-12-02 08:07:00
Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Surgery was written by Eddie Tobey from e-gastricbypasssurgery.comGastr-ic bypass surgery comes in many forms but the most popular are combination-techniques that shrink the stomach by stapling off a small section and shortening the small intestine by reattaching it at a lower point where fewer calories will be absorbed.Gastric bypass surgery and other bariatric procedures were traditionally performed with large incisions but laparoscopes have changed that resulting in lowered risks of many potential complications. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a less-invasive technique involving several small incisions in the abdomen through which surgical instruments are inserted. The laparoscope (camera) is also inserted inside the abdomen so the surgeon can see.The benefits of Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery are smaller scars, lower risk of hernias, and faster recovery compared to traditional large incision gastric bypass surgery. Laparoscopic gastric bypa...
Gastric Bypass: Remembering Surgery 6 Years Later
2008-11-27 08:07:00
Gastric Bypass: Remembering Surgery 6 Years Later was written by Kaye Bailey from livingafterwls.comSeptember 13, 1999Do you remember where you were six years ago today?I do. It was the day I underwent gastric bypass surgery ? a day that changed my life forever.I don?t recall much about that day. I remember feeling embarrassed lying on the preparation table, my enormous belly exposed to be cleansed antiseptically. I remember feeling frightened, but calm with a total acceptance that gastric bypass surgery was the best decision for me. I remember the anesthesiologist, a beautiful woman, not very old and not very big. Then I went to sleep.I woke up puking violently, an unpleasant reaction to anesthesia. I didn?t have my glasses so things were blurry, particularly the flowers from my husband. And I can remember a push-button device that helped me sleep. Later that night I realized I was not yet smaller. In fact my stomach was bloated and sore. In my drug induced vagueness I became convin...
Gastric Bypass: The Easy Way Out Of Fat Land - Right?
2008-11-22 08:07:00
Gastric Bypass: The Easy Way Out Of Fat Land - Right? was written by Kaye Bailey from livingafterwls.comIf you listen, even for a moment, to the talk in overweight communities you will almost always hear that gastric bypass weight loss surgery is the "easy way out" of Fat Land. People with weak spirits and good insurance get a lucky break, have their stomachs whacked and stapled and lose weight the easy way. Weight Loss Surgery: seen by pious public to be surgical baptism for the guilty gluttonous slothful. But those of us who step in the water to be cleansed of our fatty sins know better. Weight loss surgery is NOT the easy way out, a simple dunking of the repentant, the sins atoned, and the price paid, the soul and body healed. We know the atonement is paid every day for the rest of our lives when we set our healthy house in order with gastric bypass. We understand that WLS is not easy. Why, then, does the public think it?s redemption to weight loss?First: what the public sees is a ...

Understanding The Gastric Bypass Diet
2008-04-22 02:10:00
Gastric bypass - the newest method of losing weight today - is effective but risky. This method is not for everyone, especially not for those who only want to lose a few pounds. There are several considerations that must be discussed with the doctor before undergoing the procedure. It involves surgery which makes the stomach smaller. To make the stomach smaller, a small pouch that can only hold small amounts of food is made and connected to the lower portion of the small intestine. The patient feels full easily and consumes minimal amount of food. As a result, excess weight is lost quickly. But there are also risks involved, and one of them is nutrition insufficiency. Because of smaller food intake, the patient does not meet required levels of nutrients which results in poor health. For this reason, the gastric bypass diet is formulated. The surgery causes changes in the shape and size of the patient's stomach which cause discomfort and other side effects. However, these effects can...

2008-04-21 01:13:00
Tonite's episode of CBS's Sixty-minutes featured a fascinating segment about gastric bypass surgery to treat obesity. Obesity and unwanted weight gain is a serious illness for depression patients. Antidepressants such as Lexapro and Zyprexa can cause unwanted weight gain putting the patient at higher risk for Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and sleep apnea. According to the segment narrated by Lesley Stahl:An operation performed primarily to reduce weight in the obese has some startlingly positive side effects. Gastric bypass surgery can send type 2 diabetes into complete remission, in some cases almost instantly. It can also alleviate sleep apnea, common among obese patients, which causes them to intermittently stop breathing in their sleep. Studies also suggest gastric bypass patients greatly reduce their risks from certain obesity-related cancers, according to the American Cancer SocietyAnother beneficial side effect of the procedure may have more to do w...

via Josh Streeters New Life Fitness,From Bill Maher, August 29th, 2003's show Real Time, during his "New Rules" segment:All right, New Rule: No more celebrating gastric bypass. Carny Wilson, Al Roker and now Starr Jones are all being heralded by the media for stapling their stomachs shut. They shouldn't be. They're not making a brave choice to change. They're giving money to doctors to reroute their ability to turn food into crap. It's like kicking cocaine by crazy gluing your nostrils shut.I understand that for some, Gastric Bypass surgery may seem like the only option or the final option in some cases. I get it. What I would like to say is that, to me, in my opinion, it's simply a lack of knowledge about how the body works, how the body uses food, other options for emotional eating such as Emotional Freedom Technique or the SP6 patch that has an incredible effect of ending cravings.Gastric Bypass does not educate the patient about food, about how the body uses food, about en...
