GAY PRIDE PARADE BIGGEST EVER!
2009-06-28 22:22:00 Gay Pride Parade with the Baton Show Lounge Girls! It was such an honor to ride in the 2009 Gay Pride Parade this year! I was invited by Jim Flint to ride on the Baton Show Lounge float and it was a thrill of a lifetime. Jim has participated in every single one of the 40 parades to date and he said this one was the biggest one ever. With 250 floats involved and close to 650,000-700,000 people I agree--I've never seen anything like it. Everyone was there, obviously, and since the weather was perfect, they were all in a great mood! Senator hopeful Alexi Giannoulias was right behind us and was a real crowd pleaser. What a wonderful day for everyone. ...

Check it out I never would have guessed that that was the real reason, but it makes sense to me!...
GAY PRIDE PARADE SUNDAY!!!
2009-06-23 22:43:00 Me with famous Baton Show Lounge star, Chilli Pepper. Grab your favorite guy, girl, both or one of each and head over to Halsted and Belmont for this Sunday's annual Gay Pride Parade! It starts at noon and they are expecting over 500,000 people in Boy's Town this year! 2009's slogan, as featured in Chicago's Pride logo, is "Stonewall: 40 Years After." This was a rebellion where gays, lesbians and transsexuals fought back at a police raid. It's fitting then, that this year's Grand Marshall is Alexandra Billings who is a transgender woman. She married her wife, Chrisanne Blankenship, in Chicago in the mid 1990's and also recently married her again in their home state of California. They are...
Will new rules put damper on Chicago's Gay Pride Parade?
2009-06-22 16:15:00 Photo Credit: Michael Lehet via Flickr This year marks the 40th Anniversary of the Stonewall Inn Riots in New York City, the riots credited with starting the current LGBT Rights Movement. 40 years ago a gaggle of drag queens, hustlers, and transvestites fought against the police in a raid of the Stonewall Inn that sparked three days of riots in the city and caused the community to rally together and become activists for LGBT Rights. Having been born in 1969, the Stonewall Riots were always a part of "history" to me instead of being a contemporary issue. I've always taken for granted the rights that I have now based on the difficulties that our queer brothers and sister worked so hard...

What I did for love (TA at the gay pride parade)
2007-12-09 16:21:00 (Why yes, that post title is a reference to A Chorus Line. Man, I’m cheesy.) It was the night before the parade, and I approached my mother in the kitchen to ask her again if I could attend the gay pride parade. She, again, refused. “Please,” I whined, “my gay friends are counting on me to be ...
Heather Findlay, "Girlfriends" editor: Mr. Media Interview Classic
2007-10-31 19:57:00 Originally published December 2, 1996 Just because Girlfriends is a magazine for lesbians, don?t assume everyone who works there is on their team.?We have bisexuals in the office,? notes editor-in-chief Heather Findlay rather brightly. ?And we employed a straight over the summer! It?s not a job requirement to be a lesbian towork at Girlfriends.?Talk about an equal opportunity employer ? even the publisher is straight! Of course, she?s Findlay?s mother, Erin.?At least I think she would ID as straight,? Findlay says with a laugh. As one might imagine, this is not the typical parent/child work relationship. When Findlay and several co-workers left the infamous lesbian erotic magazine On Our Backs to launchGirlfriends two years ago, her mom became one of its major investors and accepted the title of publisher. It?s a long way from the day, 10 years ago, when 23-year-old Heather cameout to her family.?My mother was great, hilarious, actually,? Findlay says. ?When I told her, she went thro...

World's Biggest Gay Pride Parade
2007-07-07 02:47:00 Sao Paulo hosts world's largest gay pride paradeSAO PAULO, Brazil -- Millions of people packed the streets of Sao Paulo for what organizers said was the world's largest gay pride parade, dancing and waving rainbow flags in a carnival-like atmosphere to condemn homophobia, racism and sexism. At least 3 million people filled the canyonlike Paulista Avenue on Sunday, organizers said, surpassing last year's count of 2.5 million. The larger count was confirmed by a police spokesman who is not authorized to be quoted by name under department rules. "This is the biggest parade on the planet," Tourism Minister Marta Suplicy said. "Our city is showing, once again, its respect for diversity." In comparison, recent gay pride parades in New York and San Francisco have drawn tens of thousands of people, and world gay pride day celebrations in Berlin in 2004 attracted between 200,000 and 500,000 participants.(AP) Participants kiss each other during the annual Gay Pride Parade in Sao Paulo,...

Gay Pride Parade Gets Dose of Religion
2007-06-27 15:05:00 NEW YORK CITY –”Gay pride,” it seems, got a dose of religion on Sunday, June 24. And some media were quick to put it into headlines. “Religious groups lead New York gay pride parade,” an International Herald Tribune headline, for example, declared atop an Associated Press report on the June 24 “gay pride” march in New ...
Army and Royal Air Force ban personnel attending Gay Pride parade from marc
2007-06-26 15:00:00 The Army and Royal Air Force has banned personnel attending the Gay Pride parade from marching in uniform. The Times reports that about 125 servicemen and women have told organisers of the march that they would like to take part. But the Royal Air Force has said personnel who wear uniform to march in the parade in London this Saturday (30 June) will face disciplinary action. Last week, the head of the Army issued orders banning soldiers from marching in uniform. The Royal Navy, which is a member of the Stonewall Diversity Champions good practice scheme, allows sailors to march in uniform and uses it as a recruitment opportunity. The Ministry of Defence is keen to promote all the armed services as good employers for minority groups, including gay and lesbian staff. |
