Ignoring Democrat?s Opposition to Gay Rights while Painting his Republican

Gender Binary Versus Gender Spectrum: Implications for Gay Rights
2009-08-26 15:26:00 The "T" in GLBT causes anxiety for some gays and lesbians, or so I've heard. It's not only that a minority seeking mainstream acceptance may feel tempted to push some of its more flamboyant members out of the spotlight. Trans-people demonstrate the fluidity of gender, which potentially threatens one common argument for gay civil rights. Conservative Christians tout the dubious successes of "ex-gay therapy" to alter sexual orientation. Since change is possible, they contend, there really is no such category as homosexuals, and therefore they should not be a protected class under the law. Understandably, gay activists point to scientific research and personal testimonies suggesting that same-sex attraction is biologically based, innate and mostly unalterable. From what I've read about the ex-gay movement, it seems that the evidence is not on their side. Most participants merely learn to avoid acting on their undiminished desire for the same sex, and to conform to current stereotype...

Support Gay Rights, Not Censorship
2009-06-30 04:14:00 http://www.flickr.com/photos/kc-jc/ / CC BY 2.0 As we remember Stonewall and the beginning of the modern gay rights movement, the progressive community is understandably frustrated with the pace of our administration in bringing about real change. They have a point. Enough already with the military’s ridiculous “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. And it’s about time we legalize gay marriage. Yet after the stunning parades this weekend and the first official recognition of the movement by a sitting working US President, I’m filled with more hope than ever before. Which is why I didn’t allow my blood pressure to rise when WFLA/News Channel 8 aired an “it would be disturbing if it weren’t so silly” documentaryinfomercial Saturday night about wicked gays trying to silence Christians. I urged my fellow libs to take deep breaths and see this program for what it was – a spoiled brat stomping his feet and holding his breath ...

Gay Rights Leader & Bishop, Gene Robinson, to Recite Inauguration Prayer
2009-01-12 20:10:00 After much ado about Obama's stinky pick of anti-gay pastor Rick Warren to conduct the Inauguration invocation, Obama did the yin-yang thing. He chose a renowned gay bishop, Gene Robinson, to perform the Inauguration opening prayer. My first thought was, oh, Obama is throwing crumbs to the LGBT community. But on second thought, you know what? I'll take the crumbs, however they may come. At least Obama made the effort. Put on a little lipstick before heading out the door. I'll take it. In fact, I feel downright jubilant about it. So I wanted to find out more about Bishop Robinson. Here's a quickie run-down:His parents were poor tenant farmers in KentuckyHe was severely ill and partially paralyzed at birth, but overcame his disabilitiesHe was married to a woman and then ordained an Episcopal priest shortly thereafterHe has two daughters, with whom he is closeHe and his wife divorced, but remain good friendsHe has been with his current partner, Mark Andrew (whom he later married), f...

I still consider being against gay rights to be a hate crime, but my other opinions have changed.I can understand more why people don't want to legalize same-sex marriages because of "religious beliefs" or whatever, and I can respect that to a certain extent, but there's absolutely no reason why there can't be benefits provided for those in domestic partnerships and civil unions. While Pennsylvania is still full of hat...
