Disappearing Act
2008-05-19 06:14:00
by Barry Rubin Exaggerations of Israel’s demise are greatly exaggerated, to paraphrase Mark Twain. The question is: why is this suddenly happening now and–even more important–what is the impact of this fad going to be? The answer to the second question is very surprising so keep reading. The suddenness of this trend is illustrated by a telling anecdote. ...

The Israeli disengagement from the Gaza Strip in August 2005 created a new situation which accelerated the establishment of an area fully controlled by Hamas. Retaliation for Imad Mughniyah Assassination Soon?
2008-03-23 15:52:00
Reuters: Hezbollah commander hailed as a martyrBackgroundImad Mughniyah was Hezbollah?s military commander that was the mastermind of several of Hezbollah?s most successful operations starting in the 1980s. He was on the most wanted list in both the U.S. and Israel. February 12 he was assassinated via car bomb. No one has claimed responsibility, though Hezbollah blames Israel?s Mossad, the equivalent of the Israeli CIA. A 40 day mourning period then began, and is set to end tomorrow, when Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah is expected to address thousands of followers at the event in Beirut's southern suburbs. Will Hezbollah retaliate for the killing? It is quite possible Hezbollah will retaliate. In 1992, after the Israeli assassination of Hezbollah leader Sayed Abbas al-Musawi, Hezbollah attacked the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Now that the 40 day mourning period is over, and Hezbollah cells have had time to collect information and to prepare for an attack, an incide...

Hoping That Arab Governments Are Blamed
2008-01-28 23:19:00
On Wednesday I wrote ?Hoping Hamas is Blamed.? It?s pretty obvious now, just as it was then, that Hamas isn?t going to be blamed and Israel?s plan will not succeed. Luckily, a new possible scapegoat has joined the herd ? other Arab governments. The predicamentEgypt?s been left with quite a problem; Hamas will not allow the Egyptian government to shutdown the border peacefully. That leaves them with essentially two options. Option number one of the Egyptians is to shut their border with Gaza down by force. The problem with this, in their view, is that it (a) possibly destabilizes the region (b) infuriates relatives of Palestinians in Egypt.Option number two is allowing continued free passage between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. This would upset Israel and the U.S. As well, it could draw the ire of many Egyptians if Gazans become perceived as unwelcome guests.A new scapegoatUnless Gazans point their fingers at Hamas in retaliation for their poor situation, there is another group they blam...
Israel To Blame For Gaza, Says Arab League

Border Fence Folly at Rafah, Gaza
2008-01-25 03:06:00
Wednesday’s breach of Israeli-built concrete and steel “border fencing” by Hamas militants in Rafah, Gaza, with tens of thousands of Palestinians now streaming into Egypt to buy food, fuel and other supplies they haven’t had access to in months, demonstrates once again the futility of walling people in or walling people out. Desperate people do desperate things, as we theoretically learned from the Berlin Wall debacle. Masked Palestinian gunmen simply blew holes into the Gaza-Egypt border fence on Wednesday, and that was that.
Hoping That Hamas Is Blamed
2008-01-23 23:42:00
Reuters: Palestinians blow up border wall, flood into EgyptWell, it had to happen sometimes. And its too late to change course.Israel?s strategyIsrael has been attempting to isolate Hamas and make their government in Gaza look like a failure. Israel, the U.S., and other western powers have been bolstering Mahmoud Abbas?s (semi-)democratic government in the West Bank to solidify this image. The mistake of the strategy ? or not?Israel has been making life in Gaza miserable for Gazans, and life will only become exponentially worse in the following weeks and months.By increasing poverty, unemployment, and general dissatisfaction in Gaza, the West is creating the perfect situation for terrorism to grow. Terrorism is like a disease: it grows on dissatisfaction. Israel and the United States will be blamed for the bad conditions. Unless, of course Israel and the West aren?t blamed, and instead, the Hamas government is. That is the Ehud Olmert?s hope, at least. It?s too late nowThis blockade a...

The Annapolis Conference: More Hurtful Than Helpful?
2007-11-28 01:04:00
Yes, then Israelis and Palestiians appear to be finally making some progress. But it is hard to be optimistic. Beyond the Cusp (a fantastic blog/blogger) takes a cold, hard look at reality. What happens if Annapolis does succeed? He goes on to make 3 main points: 1. Implementation of the agreement would be extremely difficult 2. Once Israel withdraws from the Palestinian territories (which will be certainly part of the agreement), Hamas will take power from Fatah and declare any agreement invalid. 3. If the agreement appears unsuccessful, Iran and/or Syria could take advantage of the situation and could possibly invade Israel, leading to a regional war.Hits the nail on the head.
DVD Review: Gaza Strip

Gaza Strip, director James Longley’s first feature documentary, is a difficult film to sit through, not only because it lacks a true narrative presentation, but because it showcases some of the most shocking and distressing images brought out of the Gaza Strip to date. Israel's Mistaken Gaza Approach
2007-09-06 02:49:00
Israel is considering a power cut in Gaza in retaliation for a rocket attack that almost hit a kindergarten in a town called Sderot. This may not be the best option, but considering Israel?s current strategy, it could be the best option.Israel?s current strategyIsrael has been attempting to isolate Hamas and make their government in Gaza look like a failure. Israel, the U.S., and other western powers have been bolstering Mahmoud Abbas?s (semi-)democratic government in the West Bank to solidify this image. It hasn?t been going so well. Gaza hasn?t been a failure, but it hasn?t been a success either. But because of an international boycott of trade with Gaza, it will be a failure soon. Gaza isn?t getting basic supplies, and Gaza is being torn apart by it.A power cut would hasten Gaza?s downfall, but it would help to continue to alienate the one group of Palestinians that support?s Israel: the merchants. More on this later. But if Israel is to continue its current policy, cutting power w...

Reporters Go Sightseeing To The Gaza Strip - I?m Not Surprised
2007-07-31 15:51:00
The only thoughts I have regarding this story is that the AP reporters along with the rest of the MSM truly are terrorist cheerleaders who would like to see nothing more than the West along with Israel to go down in flames. For me, this goes down as one of the worst, misleading reports I've ever read. It makes me wonder if Hamas wrote it for them?

Israel at the ready to invade Gaza Strip

Breaking News, Gaza Strip Gunfire
2007-06-18 19:48:00
The previous post touched on the Hamas conflict in the Gaza Strip. Within the past hour news has broken that there has been a shooting at the Israel-Gaza gateway between Israeli soldiers and Hamas militants. So far only one person has died and it has not been confirmed which side the fallen was on.The gateway continues to grow with people from Gaza who are trying to flee to Israel due to the Hamas occupation and violence that is taking over their area. Israel has only let a few through. What concerns me at this point is that the number of people at the gateway continues to grow. More people means more chance for chaos and now that this news has broken it is clear that Hamas lied when they stated that they didn't have any of their men stationed at the crossing. If more gunfire breaks out, civilians may start to fall.
Gaza Strip
2007-06-17 21:05:00
Dead, greedy, multimillionaire terrorist Yasser Arafat's abandoned digs in Gaza City were consumed by looters like maggots descending on tortured and abandoned Israeli corpses. Fittingly, they stole his Nobel Peace Prize. Why the thug Arafat, who expired under rather curious circumstances a few years ago, was rewarded for his terrorism was beyond me. [Jerusalem Post] Al Gore might end up with the medal yet! Fatah is fingering Hamas. Blah, blah, blah. There's still no "peace" in the Middle East and there won't be. Pandering President Jimmy Carter got a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to get these fanatics to smoke the peace pipe. How many years ago was that? Recruit Cat Stevens, now know as Yusef something-or-other, and his "Peace Train."
