Don't Take Advice from Bloggers
2008-06-02 02:21:00 If you can get past my attention-grabbing blog post title, you might consider taking my advice about taking advice from blogs and forums on remedies for advanced technical computer problems. In the process of researching issues with Windows XP SP3 installation, compatibility and performance, I spoke with a number of industry experts. Their affiliations include Microsoft, Dell Technical Support, and The Geek Squad. I also scanned some industry and technical magazines, forums and blogs. In many blog comments and forum posts, I was shocked to find high-risk, but authoritatively-stated fixes to blue screen and Registry problems. Far too often, those detailed technical recommendations were not checked for typos or were authored by someone unknowingly giving bad advice. The average non-technical computer user gets flustered when his or her computer has a serious, unexpected malfunction. At that point, they are in the greatest danger of acting on bad advice and making their unfortunate situat...

TechIQ?s Founder: Leaping From Windows to Mac OS or Linux?
2007-11-16 15:14:00 Posted by Mike Perkowski: I have to admit ... I?ve always thought The VAR Guy was whining needlessly when it came to his lamentations about Windows XP and Vista. Why was he so ecstatic about dumping Windows for Mac and/or Ubuntu Linux? But then my own 3-year-old Dell desktop crashed at home this weekend -- and my outlook suddenly changed. Now, I need everyone?s input to help me decide what to do next: Vista, Mac OS or Linux?

Wal-Mart = Geek Squad? I Don't Think So
2007-10-10 02:16:00 Today @ PC World announced a story that Wal-Mart is teaming up with Hughes Communication to resell satellite broadband at their retail stores. Additionally, PC world says Wal-Mart is "rumored to be training a Geek Squad-like team of in-house Wal-Mart techies." Isn't that a scary thought? When I think of tech-savvy stores in my local community, I think of Best Buy and Circuit City. I know one of the last retail centers I'm going to think of with tech-savvy employee's is Wal-Mart. I don't know about your local Wal-Mart, but I would say the majority of those people employed by mine work there because they aren't qualified for other employment. My Wal-Mart is full of pimply-faced teenagers and people willing to accept a minimum wage job because that's all that is available. Do you really want someone working on your computer that couldn't find a job anywhere but Wal-Mart? And the fact that they need to train a team speaks volumes. It means they aren't willing to pay ...
Speakeasy + Best Buy + Geek Squad: How to Make It All Work
2007-09-20 15:58:00 Speakeasy + Best Buy + Geek Squad On paper this troika is a very good thing. One of the biggest issues all VoIP companies have is servicing the small business market on the installation end. The synergy being established here makes sense on paper. But it comes down to the execution. This story shows that there are still teething pains going on. My take is that if Best Buy can line up a relationship with DeVry Technical Schools then they could have a pipeline of Geek Squad members to help support the future growth.
Geek Squad City Tour
2007-09-13 09:30:00 So I just got back from the IdeaFestival kick off party at Geek Squad City and I?m pretty speechless. I?ll give the quick and dirty since I?m tired and a bit inebriated. The facility there is HUGE. Imagine over 600 ‘agents’ showing up in black slacks, black shoes, white shirts and a black tie to ...

Geek Squad steals porn from dead pornstar Jasmine Grey's HD
2007-07-13 10:10:00 I worked for Best Buy 285 several years ago (2003-2005) and was both a Blackshirt and an Agent once the Geek Squad rolled out. At my store, searching and copying files was not a common practice at all. We were the good guys of the district. One day, however, a gorgeous woman walked in with her computer complaining of her PC locking up when she went to use her webcam. She refused to give us her website so we knew something was up. She authorized us to do a tune-up to remove unneeded files and update her to SP2. During the cleanup process, we saw that her Norton Protected Recycle Bin was consuming 12gigs of files. It was password protected... but she used the same password as her windows login (which users provide on one of the thousand forms they fill out when they drop the PC off). Once we got into the recycle bin, we realized it was entirely filled with naked pictures and movies. It turns out that this young woman was a pornstar named Jasmine Grey.

Geek Squad scours computers for sex
2007-05-03 14:00:00 Confessions of Geek Squad crew member prove to be more revealing than the last photo you kept of your ex-girlfriend. Apparently a 10 page paper on the inner-workings of Best Buy's Geek Squad shares the takeover from tech support to sales and the magic tricks of the trade. Perhaps the most pertinent of highlights included an entertaining easter egg hunt for customer's porn. Using USB drives, the Geek Squad grabs whatever remaining un-Flickr-ed photos and porn they can find on hard drives for their grubby one-handed typing. This ten-pager may come off as more-than-terrifying for ex-girlfriends and lonely guys alike.tags technorati : best buy geek squad porn
