Incredibly Ignored Iolite
2008-03-25 10:19:00 ?That?s not real tanzanite?..its just iolite!? Ever hear that from one of your customers? Or perhaps be out in someone else?s store and hear someone make that remark? Ever since tanzanite came on the market a few years ago, iolite has been given a back seat on the gemstone marketing bus. Why? Because iolite offers the same beautiful blue color of tanzanite, but has a second color of?well, colorless?instead of the purple of tanzanite. So tanzanite has been getting all the attention, because iolite is blue/colorless rather than blue/purple. You can see the two colors in the images below. And for many years iolite has been regarded as a tanzanite wannabe. A cheap substitution. Well, that is no longer the case. Its time to start paying some attention to this Incredibly Ignored Iolite.Let?s face it, the jewelry industry needs some cost effective tanzanite alternatives in today?s market, both for themselves and for their customers. Tanzanite continues to be in full production, in spite of...

Enhancement of gemstones ? Part I
2008-02-28 10:17:00 Luster or fire, color or lack of color, iridescence, opalescence, asterism and chatoyance (cat?s-eye or star effect) are some of the unique properties that increase the beauty and value of a gemstone. Since the beginning of civilization jewelers have increased their profits by using various means of making gemstones appear more attractive and valuable. In Harappa and Lothal, sites of the Indus valley civilization, archaeologists have uncovered pieces of agate and carnelian that were cooked in charcoal furnaces to change their color and enhance their appeal. Even in the ancient cities of Egypt, Ur, and Babylon, gem traders commonly practiced some kind of gemstone enhancements. Egyptian payrii describe some of their techniques, as for instance, how pearls were bleached by passing them through the intestines of a live cock or by soaking them in slaked lime. Verdigris and vinegar, oil and calves bile formed part of a process to make Emeralds. Various gemstones of Indian origin found in ...

The Healing Gemstones
2008-01-20 04:21:00 I am really into the spiritual and healing stuff this year. In about 3 weeks time, the energy of the world will change into a new water energy - Rat Year. Hope, it will be a good year for me and to you as well. But it will be a hostile year for those who were born in the Horse Year, i.e accident, death, relationship problem, divorce, bankruptcy....who knows? Thank God, I don't have Rat in my birthchart because the clashes between Rat and Horse, is the worst clash ever....really painful! But the interesting part of my life now is the healing stuff. I did not believe on it at the beginning, but the experienced that I have, changed the whole of my perception on these stuff - the healing gemstones!I have a problem with nervousness, I hate when that feeling comes, it's really killing me. It is some kind of phobia..I've got nervous about the height, public speaking, exams, meeting VIPs, fast driving. It was just a hunch when I bought the Amethyst bracelet supposely healing the skin prob...

How to Buy Genuine Diamonds and Gemstones on eBay
2008-01-14 15:35:00 Purchasing a genuine diamond or gemstone ? not a ?faux? or ?simulated? stone - on eBay can be a scary prospect. Unlike going to a jeweler, you can?t examine it in person and assess how it looks on your ring finger before you shell out your hard-earned cash. There?s the very real risk that you?re not going to get what you paid for.But these concerns can be addressed by being a smart eBay shopper. After all, when you buy on eBay, the savings can be huge and you can find really unique jewelry items! Before bidding on any diamond or precious gem (such as emerald, ruby or sapphire), make sure you understand how value is determined for that particular stone. There?s no excuse for not being an educated shopper. If eBay sellers don?t address these characteristics in their auction listings, click on the ?Ask seller a question? link and get answers before you bid!Determining ValueFor diamonds, that means evaluating the four Cs: clarity, color, carat and cut.Clarity is the term used to describe...

Gemstones, the Significance of Colour
2007-11-17 09:59:00 Our response to colour is actually much more complex than most peoplerealise. It's a mixture of instinct, cultural conditioning and theresult of personal experiences and associations. We can seeinstinctive responses in nature, warning colours like red, orange andacid green are associated with being poisonous and animals haveevolved to avoid those colours (as other animals have evolved to mimicthose warning colours as self-protection. Associations of coloursnaturally come from our environment too, the blue of the sky, the goldof the sun, the green of grass, the red of blood and orange of fire, all produce memories and emotions. However, the memories and emotionsabout fire colours for example would be very different for someone whoassociates them with a log fire on an winter evening and someone whohas had the isfortune to be caught in a house or car fire. Oftennegative memories mean a "gut response" to a colour; the person mightnot even be aware on a conscious level why t...

Cardinal Gemstones & Semi Precious Gemstones
2007-11-13 14:33:00 Historically, the term Cardinal gemstones was used to refer to five gemstones once considered to be of prime importance: diamond, emerald, ruby, sapphire and amethyst. The status of Cardinal was imparted to these five stones due to their rarity and, by default, value. With the exception of amethyst which, due to large deposits since being discovered, the Cardinal stones have maintained their venerated status of most valued and valuable stones. The term "precious" has superseded Cardinal as the adjective for such gemstones. By implication most other gemstones including turquoise, garnet, amber and amethyst are now classified as "semi-precious".The distinction of precious and semi-precious is considered outmoded by some. Robert M. Shipley, the founder of Gemological Institute of America, called it “an indeterminate and misleading classification”.The argument for employing this distinction is that it helps dealers and buyers understand the value of the stones they are selling or buyi...

However, aquamarine blue is alsothe colour of water with its life-giving force. And aquamarine really doesseem to have captured the lucid blue of the oceans. No wonder, when youconsider that according to the saga it originated in the treasure chest offabulous mermaids, and has, since ancient times, been regarded as thesailors...

Two New Hand Fabricated Men's Rings set with Semi-Precious Gemstones by Joh
2007-06-18 16:32:00 New to the Tonga Collection, this hand fabricated Sterling Silver Men's ring is set with a 12 carat faceted Amethyst. Hand fabrication is a more labor intensive method of ring making and produces a higher quality ring as opposed to the most common method - lost wax casting. Here's why: PorosityCentrifugal Lost Wax Casting was developed in the 1930's as a way to make fine jewelry more affordable through mass production. With Lost Wax, a ring is carved in wax, set in plaster, then placed in a kiln where the wax is "lost" through burn out, leaving a reverse impression in the plaster. Gold or Silver is then melted and poured into the mold, then spun within a centrifuge (or vacuum) to disperse the molten metal throughout the mold. After the metal has cooled, the ring can be cleaned and polished. The finished ring can then be cast in rubber, producing a mold. Hot wax can then be injected into this rubber mold, producing "copies." The copies can then be assembled onto a "t...

New Gemstones!
2007-03-11 16:59:00 Hi All! Sorry about the delay with my posting. I've had company for a week. That's the excuse, but the truth is I haven't been inspired to write lately until now.Below are photos of new gemstones I just got in. They are aquamarine rondelles & I can't wait to work with them! Of course, it could be a while - I have a backlog of gems waiting to find a home:) With these ones I'll need to decide if I want to keep the color mix or if I will attempt to separate them by color. I guess that will depend what pieces I decide to make with them. I also took photos against a black background. I like to see how gemstones look against different colored backgrounds. It really can change their entire personality. Thanks for having a look-see. I hope to post more often now, so check back occasionally! Also, be sure to check out my store to see some of the pieces I've done with other gemstones.

It really can change their entire personality. Thanks for having a look-see. I hope to post more often now, so check back occasionally! Also, be sure to check out my store to see some of the pieces I've done with other gemstones.
