Rare Gene Vincent Outtakes Available from Bear Family Records
2007-11-11 23:31:00
Here's one that we somehow missed when it came out back in September. Bear Family Records out of Germany has released a six-CD set of every known outtake by the late rock legend Gene Vincent. The sessions in the set date from October 1958 to March 1967 and, except for a few rare exceptions, this is all previously unreleased material. While the set may not be of interest to the casual fan, this is a treasure trove for fans of Vincent and for those who want to see how music develops in the studio. The recording of over thirty-five different songs are chronicled with up to twenty-five different takes included. Hearing all the different takes and the studio discussion gives a great lesson in how different styles and tempos are tested, arrangements are made and the final record is assembled.CDs 1 & 2 contain the final sessions with Vincent's group, the Blue Caps while the balance of CD 2 through 4 are the Capital Studio sessions from January 1961. The end of CD 4 and all of 5 chr...

Gene Vincent - Lotta Lovin' (1957)
2007-07-20 09:00:00
Gene Vincent only had one really big hit, "Be-Bop-a-Lula," which epitomized rockabilly at its prime in 1956 with its sharp guitar breaks, spare snare drums, fluttering echo, and Vincent's breathless, sexy vocals. Yet his place as one of the great early rock & roll singers is secure, backed up by a wealth of fine smaller hits and non-hits that rate among the best rockabilly of all time. The leather-clad, limping, greasy-haired singer was also one of rock's original bad boys, lionized by romanticists of past and present generations attracted to his primitive, sometimes savage style and indomitable spirit. Vincent was bucking the odds by entering professional music in the first place. As a 20-year-old in the Navy, he suffered a severe motorcycle accident that almost resulted in the amputation of his leg, and left him with a permanent limp and considerable chronic pain for the rest of his life. After the accident he began to concentrate on building a musical career, playing with count...

Another quick bit of Jersey music history for you, this time concerning Rock and Roll pioneer Gene Vincent. For those of you who don't know him, Vincent was the the man who penned the classic 'Be Bop A Lula', virtually single-handedly invented the bad-ass black-leather Rocker look, was in the car crash that killed Eddie Cochran......and during summer of 1963, was in Jersey to perform at Springfield Hall (now demolished). Now, Vincent was a bit of a drinker. In 1955 he'd suffered a motorbike crash which almost lost him a leg, and would leave him in chronic pain for the rest of his life. Alcohol helped dull that pain, so naturally whilst in Jersey he sought out a pub. To be precise, The Exeter, in St. Helier's Queen Street. Now anyone who has been to The Exeter will know just how small the place is, and will probably find it hard to believe that in the early 60's there was a pool table in the centre of the downstairs bar. That pool table ended up ruining Gene Vincent's night on th...
