Maryland's economic hits just keep on coming
2009-09-18 16:50:00
I hate to sound like a broken record, but Maryland's finances are bad ... and getting worse by the minute. This summer saw Gov. Martin O'Malley announce budget cuts of $280 million and $454 million. Autumn is off to a...
Judge says, "You should have sued the General Assembly"
2009-09-09 23:30:00
Judge Peter Flynn, of the Chancery Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County, has issued a ruling in my Driver's Education Fee lawsuit. That's the case in which I challenged, in behalf of my daughter, Dawn, the $350 fee that Buffalo Grove High School and School District 214 charges for its Driver's Education Behind-the-Wheel class.  (The classroom portion of Driver's Ed is free.) Dawn and I challenged the amount of the fee because the $350 charge is used mostly to cover the salary and benefits of Driver's Ed teachers. Article X, Section 1 of the Illinois Constitution, says, in pertinent part: "Education in public schools through the secondary level shall be free." The Illinois Supreme Court, in E. L. Segar...
General Assembly caught playing hide-the-ball on donations to churches and
2009-07-10 19:30:00
In a desperate dirty tricks attempt to illegally sneak our taxes dollars to their favorite churches and parochial schools and to conceal it from me, Speaker Mike Madigan and the Illinois General Assembly secretly transfered the proposed unconstitutional donations from House Bill 313 Senate Amendment 3 to Senate Bill 1221 House Amendment 3. Thanks to information provided to me by Burt in the Skokie district office of State Representative Lou Lang, they didn't get away with it.  I caught them, and now I'm going to stop them....

News: Sandinista priest presides UN General Assembly
2008-06-07 20:43:00
Former Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Miguel D'Escoto Brockmann is elected president of the U.N. General Assembly. His bio is more interesting than merely "being a US born Roman Catholic priest".He backed the revolution in Nicaragua, joining Sandinista leader Daniel Ortega's government as foreign minister, a period sprouting fierce US under cover opposition in the so-called "contra-revolution".D'Escoto's- anti-American past includes successfully taking the US to the International Court of Justice in the Hague for arming Contra rebels and staging a hunger strike against U.S. policy. In 2004 he told a U.S. news program former President Ronald Reagan was "the butcher of my people" and called President George W. Bush Reagan's "spiritual heir". (Full)In his acceptance speech, he said "(..)love is what is most needed in this world. Selfishness is what has gotten us into the terrible quagmire in which the world is sinking, almost irreversibly, unless something big happens."d'Escoto spoke ...

Kentucky General Assembly: Damned if they Do and Damned if they Don't
2008-01-16 00:37:00
The Family Foundation always seems to be a thorn in the ass and the poison in the belly that slows progress in Kentucky, either by spreading their hate via the Kentucky Citizen or standing on their hypocritical stump preaching against gambling in Kentucky. The Family Foundation has teamed up, as always, with Say No to Casinos to spread the word of GOD and to stop Vito Corleone from making Kentucky his home. I thought this country was built on the foundation of, We the People, not we the Kentucky General Assembly. When an issue of such polarity such as a constitutional amendment for and or against casino gaming is being debated; it is in the best interest of the members of the Kentucky General Assembly to listen to the people. We know these right wingers only use the Constitution when it suits them. They seem to have no problem distorting the spirit of our Constitution by making the ridiculous suggestion that Kentucky Lawmakers should ignore the people's voice. Of course they ar...

A spokesperson for The Bahamas United Nations Office in New York told The Guardian that The Bahamas has a position that it would take during the vote, however, the spokesperson declined to state what that position would be. The Third Committee of the UN General Assembly met yesterday to discuss the resolution and also to deal with 14 amendments to that resolution. They are expected to reconvene at 10 a.m. today to take a vote. There hasn't been a hanging in The Bahamas since David Mitchell met his fate at the gallows on January 6, 2000. The First Committee Carnival Begins
2007-10-17 11:02:00
This week, the UN General Assembly's First Committee, which deals with disarmament and international security, began its annual 4-week marathon of arm-twisting and horse trading that will result, at the end of the month, in a crop of draft resolutions on almost every conceivable aspect of disarmament, arms control and international security. From guns, mines and missiles; through chemical, biological and nuclear weapons; to preventing an arms race in outer space; all this, and much more, will be discussed, debated and voted on in New York over the these four weeks. It is difficult, to say the least, for a casual observer to get an overview of what goes on at First Committee (not to mention understanding it all). We can be very grateful, therefore, for the excellent reporting provided by the First Committee Monitor produced by the Reaching Critical Will project. Even so, there is a lot of information to keep abreast of. 192 States (yes, all UN Member States are also members of the Fi...

President Bush Addresses United Nations General Assembly
2006-09-20 04:24:02
THE PRESIDENT: Mr. Secretary General, Madam President, distinguished delegates, and ladies and gentlemen: I want to thank you for the privilege of speaking to this General Assembly. Last week, America and the world marked the fifth anniversary of the attacks that filled another September morning with death and suffering. On that terrible day, extremists killed nearly 3,000 innocent people, including citizens of dozens of nations represented right here in this chamber. Since then, the enemies of humanity have continued their campaign of murder. Al Qaeda and those inspired by its extremist ideology have attacked more than two dozen nations. And recently a different group of extremists deliberately provoked a terrible conflict in Lebanon. At the start of the 21st century, it is clear that the world is engaged in a great ideological struggle, between extremists who use terror as a weapon to create fear, and moderate people who work for peace. Five years ago, I stood at this po...
