Lessons in Impermanence, Part 1
2010-02-22 13:00:00 David Bowie singing his signature anthem of impermanence, “Changes.” If there’s anything to learn from this recession is that nothing is permanent. Way before our economy tanked to where it is now, corporations adopted the layoff as a quick road to profits during the Clinton years. Downsizing, reducing redundancies, etc – it became the popular way ...

Nirvana: Voice of Generation X
2008-08-07 01:23:00 The teen spirit that is always a component of the ether can hover for years without coalescing into anything more than a haze ? that vague, uneasy, something-in-the-air feeling rising like swamp gas as a byproduct of living young and unsteady in a hostile world that hasn’t yet made its intentions clear. But it can ...
Generation X
2008-06-01 06:05:00 April sent me an email thing that was supposed to make you fee all nostalgic for children's toys and other fads of the 70s and 80s. I couldn't relate at all, because I was an adult in that time period. She managed to make me feel quite ancient, again. She was listening to some CDs the other day, and that old familiar riff came on, "Under Pressure" by Davd Bowie and Queen. But it was "Ice Ice Baby" and we remarked about how OLD the song was. (chorus: how old was it?) April tried to remember which GRADE she was in when the song was hot. I tried to remember who I was married to. We finally looked it up... 1990. Vanillla Ice's song is 16 years old. It could get a driver's liscence. And I think I will go take another dose of Geritol. And put a blanket over my legs. Things other people did when they were your age. In case you needed another reason to be depressed. (Thanks, Del!) The Institute of Official Cheer will remind you of some of ...

Generation X: Tales From An Accelerated Culture
2008-04-29 19:35:00 I love Douglas Coupland. I've read almost all of his books and loved each one of them. It was only a matter of time before I finally got to 'Generation X'...and I'd have to say I'm disappointed. I mean, it's still the same, insightful Coupland wit that has driven all his other books, but I found it to be too pretentious and condescending. Coupland's social criticism, while always sharp, still managed to walk the fine line between snobby and vulnerable. This time around, the three main characters, Andy, Dag, and Claire spent the entire time on their high horses looking down at the rest of the world as they decide to spend their lives out of "normal civilization" by living in the Mojave desert. Unlike other Coupland books, I was sad to see so little effort given to character development for the trio of desert dwellers, as most of the book revolves around their story telling. Three pretentious Gen X-er's who have nothing better to do than lay around the pool of their condo's, ...
Booting the boys off the bus: Coverage costly, newspapers whine
2008-03-30 19:05:00 Timothy Crouse’s book gave us the overused phrase “boys on the bus.” Now, it seems, the boys (and girls) are being yanked off the bus in droves. Fewer and fewer reporters for the nation’s major dailies are riding the campaign bus and flying on the press plane to regularly cover the remnants of the pre-convention presidential race. That bodes poorly for both the survival of the print press and the level of political knowledge of the electorate the print press decreasingly serves. Jacques Steinberg of The New York Times reports that 650 journalists parachuted into Cleveland, Ohio, in February to cover the debate between Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. “But,” Mr. Steinberg writes, “early the next morning, as the two candidates set off for engagements across Ohio and Texas, representatives of only two dozen or so news organizations tagged along.” [emphasis added]. Newspaper managers say they have reasons for pulling the boys off t...

Why I am for Obama: It?s more than just the man, it?s the movement
2008-02-05 19:51:00 What’s the difference between a skeptic and a cynic? A skeptic is someone who, when told something, doesn’t immediately believe it to be true and looks deeper into the issue before making their decision. A cynic is someone who, when told something, automatically assumes it to be false, and doesn’t bother looking any further, because it’s just got to be bullshit. It’s essential, especially in these times of fear and paranoia, that we maintain a healthy skepticism about what we are told. It was lack of skepticism that mired us in the endless hell of the Iraq war, after all. But I fear that genuine skepticism has been swamped by the all-consuming cynical passivity that says, “This is all bullshit, so why should I care or do anything about it? None of it matters.” But it does matter. And watching the meteoric rise of Barack Obama has reminded me of how much it can all matter, for those who’re willing to believe. As has been noted in the pr...

A human thinking trap (and how to avoid it)
2008-01-28 00:08:00 There is a very important man in human history whose name too few people know: Alfred Korzybski. He’s the father of general semantics, and before you say to yourself, “Oh, it’s only semantics,” understand that improper use of semantics can absolutely, positively, kill you. I’ll explain why, shortly. Korzybski is not only the father of general semantics, but a god high in the pantheon of such fields as cybernetics, neuro-linguistics, consistency theory, and the like. He deserves to be. He was the first to examine human behavior in terms of what people can know, and how they act on that knowledge (Descartes may have provided a foundation, but Korzybski built the palace). He said that there are really only two means of knowing: (1) through the structure and capabilities of the nervous system, and (2) through the structure of language and how we use it. Korzybski divided all human experience into levels. The first level is the event itself. The s...

Bill Strauss, generational analyst
2007-12-19 16:33:00 Bill Strauss, who co-authored a number of important books on generational dynamics, is dead at 60. This is a great loss. Strauss and his colleague Neil Howe were responsible for some of the most insightful and important analyses ever done into American generations. Thanks to them we now have a heightened ability to understand the cyclical nature of generations, affording us a tremendous capability to anticipate coming trends. 13th Gen: Abort, Retry, Ignore, Fail, their examination of Generation X, literally changed my life. Up until I discovered it in th early ’90s I had no idea about the broad economic and social factors shaping what I thought was my own personal little hell. It seemed to me that there was a rulebook for professional success and that everybody had a copy except me. 13th Gen made clear that it wasn’t just me - I was at the very front edge of a cohort full of people facing the same struggles for the same reasons. Howe and Strauss’ work (especially M...
Obama and the false war of generational dynamics
2007-11-24 23:21:00 Pundits are much like birds flocking south for the winter…they travel in large groups, directed a certain way by a few leaders that twist this way and that, directing the rest of the flock to follow. It seems that if you watch the flock, it looks like they have no idea which way they’re going, so willy-nilly and arbitrary are their changes of direction. And so it is that this week we get no fewer than four distinct flocks flying around this week, each one presenting a very different directional tilt on the topic of whether or not Barack Obama is a candidate for “Generation X,” the “Millenial” generation, both, neither, or something totally different. First we have Andrew Sullivan’s “Goodbye To All That,” which paints Obama as a post-Baby Boomer messiah that can deliver the country from the Boomer struggles that are still being fought today through proxies. Iraq isn’t about Iraq, Sullivan argues, but about Vietnam and the c...

Generation X
2007-06-25 17:12:00 Yes, I am in Generation X, yes, I have been swamped in getting this new public relations business in Vermont up and running, and yes - it is finally coming together! I am moved into my new house in the Old North End of Burlington, Vermont, my home office is set up, and I know it is time to get blogging!!So, I just got back from the Lake Champlain Chamber of Commerce Travel and Tourism Study Committee meeting, and have some thoughts I'd like to share. First of all, the purpose of such meetings is to ultimately find ways to beef up tourism in Vermont - an industry that impacts so much of the state's economy, yet - in my opinion - is in constant need of improvement. While sitting at the meeting, I am filled with thoughts and ideas that break from my regular flow of client work (much of which deals with Vermont tourism) that often helps shape new ideas away from my current train of thought. The one I want to write about today - and hope to get some comments on - is Generation X an...

Nissan To Stage Global Reveal For Next-Generation X-Trail In Geneva
2007-02-16 14:58:02 Nissan will be staging a world premier unveiling for its next generation X-Trail crossover SUV at the coming Geneva Auto Show which is but a few weeks away. Unlike many such press unveilings of late, there?s no calculated drip-drip of advance media information or teaser sketches, so the first time anyone outside Nissan gets to see the new X-Trail will be at the show itself. And that?s good?we like surprises. So, what can we tell you? This second generation X-Trail will be spun off the same C-platform family that underpins Nissan?s new small Rogue SUV, and will be targeted mainly at Europe and Japan to fight the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. From what we hear, the trucklet won?t be coming to the U.S. because Nissan will soon have the Rogue and Murano covering where the X-Trail might conceivably go. (We?re not yet sure where that leaves Canada, which presently markets both the current X-trail and Murano). Expect, then? ...another car-based, urbanized SUV with front-drive/selectable all... |
