Selfish Genes
2009-08-19 10:12:00
This is a re-post from a contribution of mine to Bitesize Bio. I doubt that anyone reading Bitesize Bio has never heard of Richard Dawkins. He’s always been controversial in one way or another, ever since the release of arguably his most popular book, The Selfish Gene (Amazon US/UK). But despite Dawkins’ notoriety, maybe there are ...
Are Contaminants Silencing Our Genes?
2009-08-04 16:07:00
From Scientific American: Each of us starts life with a particular set of genes, 20,000 to 25,000 of them. Now scientists are amassing a growing body of evidence that pollutants and chemicals might be altering those genes--not by mutating them, but by sending subtle signals that si

Moss Can Be Used As 'Surrogate Mother' To Human Genes
2009-05-12 02:28:00
Moss, that dark green, short, furry plant that seems to grow spontaneously in dark, moist spaces, has unexpectedly shown up as a kind of surrogate mother to human genes, able to read human genes and manufacture the proteins encoded on them!  This finding, made by  Martin Fussenegger, Professor of Chemical and Bioengineering at ETH Zurich and others at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau, is a 450 million year old reversal of fortune!

Genes breast cancer risk
2009-02-17 05:21:00
Reporting this week in Nature Genetics, Wei Zheng, M.D., Ph.D, and his colleagues have identified a region on chromosome 6 that is strongly linked to breast cancer susceptibility in Asian women. This genetic "locus" may help guide efforts to find the specific genes linked with sporadic or non-inherited forms of the disease, the authors suggest........

2008-12-30 13:42:00
Researchers have uncovered 3 genes that they say made the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic so deadly. According to the Japanese-US research team, the genes allowed the virus to reproduce inside lung tissue making it impossible to contain. The researchers noted that the virus replicated in the upper respiratory tract, but also in the lungs, causing primary pneumonia ...

2008-12-16 14:55:00

Black Genes in Southern Europeans
2008-11-20 00:25:00
My post here, A Little Black In All Of Us, has aroused a tremendous amount of controversy. Not to beat this dead horse with a stick, but there are Southern Europeans and their supporters who strongly object to the notion that they have more than a smidgen of Black blood in them. In fact, there are websites that are set up in part to specifically negate that premise. Some of their supporters are simply racists. This is definitely a sore point with Southern Europeans. As an Italian friend of mine said, "The Southern Italians really hate to be called negri. If you call them negri, they pull out the knife." A little sensitive? In my post, I suggested that some Southern Europeans, notably Sicilians, Greeks, Spaniards and Portuguese, had more than a negligible amount of Black in them, around 5%. This produced a hailstorm of protest from the aforementioned folks, and resulted in some bannings from the comments.I admit I'm not an expert on the subject. The Black genes in these Southern Europ...

Genes and Language Match Well
2008-10-08 21:00:00
This post will look into whether or not genes and language line up well. The question may seem academic, but it is important for linguists in the battle for whether or not there is anything to the large macro-families that the "lumpers" are creating. It's yet another skirmish in the lumpers versus splitters battle in Historical Linguistics. Historical in the branch that deals with language families, language relationships and reconstruction of old languages that are no longer spoken. The debate has heated up in recent years due to the prominence of lumper theories publicized by the late Joseph Greenberg and his followers and disciples, notably Merrit Ruhlen at Stanford University. Ruhlen and Greenberg use a technique called mass comparison which has come under a lot of wild and irrational abuse, but seems to be a valid scientific method in the hands of an expert.Greenberg used to come up with the four major language families of Africa a long time ago and his classification there has ...
Berber Genes in Europeans
2008-09-13 10:16:00
It seems reasonable that Southern Europeans especially would have a considerable amount of Berber genes in them. This has been disputed by certain Southern European White racist bloggers like Dienekes Pontikos and Racial Reality. These bloggers are vociferously opposed to the notion that Southern Europeans are anything but pretty near pure White. For instance, here Dienekes states gives Berber percentages in Europeans as follows:Nation Berber %Spain 1%Italy 1.75%France 2%I am going to disagree with this assessment, though I admit I am not an expert on the subject. Looking at this journal article (table here). we come up with something a lot different. From Cruciani et al 2004:Ethnic Group Berber %Spain (Cantabrian Pasiegos) 30%Spain (Cantabria) 17%Southern Portugal 12.2%Northern Portugal 4%Spain (Basques) 3.6%France 3.5%Spain (Asturias) 2.2%Southern Spain...

Viernes 13: las imágenes
2008-07-24 01:26:00

Putting People in Prison For Their Genes!
2008-07-06 09:16:00
Image via Wikipedia Addiction Largely Determined By Our Genes - Annual Meeting Of The Royal College Of PsychiatristsThe mystery of why one person becomes hooked on alcohol, heroin, sex or gambling, and another remains free of addiction, lies deep in the brain and is largely determined by our genes - [Medical News Today, UK]This, should anyone consider it to be true, makes a mockery of the Misuse of Drugs Act's Class C and B with the duress of prison sentencing for ingestion of any kind of cannabis. (possession is logically even more irrational) Targeting of minority's based on genetics is an abrogation of common decency and a violation of human rights. It is time that disability legislation dealt with this matter ASAP.(no decision about us, without us.)Cannabis Law is defacto Eugenics -'bioethicists should be on the look out for those subtle social forces which canundermine the voluntariness of people's choices and consents.' - Eugenics and the Criticism of Bioethics, Ann Kerr ...
Older fathers, older maternal grandfathers and new gene mutations in genes

VERY IMPORTANT ARTICLE "The roots of several mental disorders lie in defects in the synaptic proteins, more than 50 of which have been linked to diseases like schizophrenia, Dr. Grant said."Brainpower May Lie in Complexity of Synapses By NICHOLAS WADEPublished: June 10, 2008Evolution’s recipe for making a brain more complex has long seemed simple enough. Just increase the number of nerve cells, or neurons, and the interconnections between them. A human brain, for instance, is three times the volume of a chimpanzee’s.Get Health News From The New York Times » A whole new dimension of evolutionary complexity has now emerged from a cross-species study led by Dr. Seth Grant at the Sanger Institute in England. Dr. Grant looked at the interconnections between neurons, known as synapses, which until now have been regarded as a standard feature of neurons. But in fact the synapses get considerably more complex going up the evolutionary scale, Dr. Grant and colleagues r...

Tumor Suppressor Genes Affect Aging
2008-06-02 19:10:00
On Friday the Mayo Clinic announced that its researchers had shown that—in mice, at least—a pair of tumor suppression genes had a significant impact on aging. Their findings were published in the online issue of Nature Cell Biology. The researchers discovered that when the tumor suppression gene p16 was over-expressed, tissues in their mice models started aging rapidly. But when the p19 gene was overexpressed, it counteracted the effects of p16, retarding aging. Whether these results will have any implications for humans is yet to be determined.

What are the causes of depression?; it is in the genes.
2008-05-20 19:06:00
While depression can strike anyone at any time, research has identified several factors associated with an increased risk for depression: Family History—Having an immediate family member with depression increases the risk of developing depression. Other mental illnesses, such as alcoholism in family members, also can increase the risk for depression. Early Childhood Experience—Early childhood trauma, such as loss of a parent before adolescence, child neglect, physical, emotional or sexual abuse, and parental divorce are all linked to increased risk for adult depression. Stress—Negative life events, such as divorce, loss of a loved one or loss of employment are associated with increased depression. Research shows that chronic stresses (such as illness, lack of social support and numerous "daily hassles") also are linked to depression. Alcohol—Depression and alcoholism often is seen in the same patient at the same time. Alcohol is a depressant and its presence ...
