2007-08-15 05:28:00 Author: Eric Subject: The Bible on the Age of the Earth & the UniversePosted: Tue Aug 14, 2007 11:28 pm (GMT -4) Is the Bible Clear About the Age of the Earth and Universe? Mark Van Bebber and Paul S. Taylor God uses a relatively large amount of space in Genesis 1 to make it very clear that He created the universe in six days. There is no mention of billions-of-years or any great period of time. However, many people still wonder whether or not the modern scientific belief that the earth and universe have existed for billions of years can be harmonized with a literal interpretation of the Bible. Most Christians have heard the argument that the word “day” in Genesis does not mean a literal 24 hour type day, but rather that the “days” represent 6 great ages of time. This is often referred to as the day-age theory. Many people have wondered whether this argument is valid. It is true, after all, that the Hebrew word for day (yom) can have several different meanings, depending...

2007-07-31 03:52:00 Author: Eric Subject: How Old are Dinosaur Bones?Posted: Mon Jul 30, 2007 9:52 pm (GMT -4) Dinosaur Bones - Just How Old are They Really? An evolutionary dinosaur expert reveals some fascinating facts! Carl Wieland Most people think that fossil bones (of which the most well-known examples are those of dinosaurs) must be very, very old—because, after all, they have turned to stone, haven’t they? Even millions of years might, to some, not even seem long enough to allow for natural processes to gradually, molecule by molecule, replace the original substance of the bone with rock minerals. But this common picture is misleading. A recent book, co-authored by a world expert on dinosaurs, points out some things about dinosaur bones that are of great interest to creationists.1 For one thing, it says: ‘Bones do not have to be “turned into stone” to be fossils, and usually most of the original bone is still present in a dinosaur fossil.’2 Ok, but even if the actual b...

How old is this earth anyway? The textbooks are teaching the kids the earth is billions of years old. Yet if you add up the dates given in the Bible, it says about 6,000 years old. Somebody is clearly wrong. If you look in of Colossians 1, it tells us Jesus created all things. So I would bet that Jesus knows how old the earth is. And in Genesis 1, it says God created all things. So God knows how old the earth is. Jesus is God Almighty in the flesh, by the way. And Jesus said in Matthew 19:4, “Have you not read that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female.” Well, if that was the beginning then we should be able to figure out the age of the earth because it tells us in the book of Romans tha...

Helium has an important safety advantage—it cannot burn or explode like hydrogen. It is also a vital part of air mixtures for breathing by deep-sea divers—unlike nitrogen, it hardly dissolves in blood or lipids (fatty compounds) even at high pressures. This avoids nitrogen narcosis, where the nervous system (60% lipid) becomes saturated with nitrogen, which can make divers feel as if they had consumed one martini per 100 ft of depth. It also avoids the bends or decompression sickness, a painful and dangerous condition caused by nitrogen bubbles forming in the diver’s blood, nervous system, joints, and under the skin, if the pressure drops too fast as the diver re-surfaces. The ...

For many centuries, man considered the seashore as little more than a shallow, sandy extension that went from one continent to another. Then, in 1873 a group of British scientists carrying out research in the Pacific Ocean discovered a “recess” (trench) 35,800 feet deep. A trench is a long, narrow depression in the ocean floor that looks like an enormous gash with extremely steep sides. The topography and depth of these trenches are used to distinguish them from other valleys and depressions in the oceans. Three major oceans have trenches in them, but the Pacific is most renowned for such. Extensive studies have been carried out on the Marianas Trench off the coast of Guam. In fact, several years ago a research team, using the bathyscaph Trieste, traveled almost seven miles down into one trench. The Bible, however,...

2007-06-02 21:13:00 Author: Eric Subject: Radioactive Dating Method ‘Under Fire’Posted: Sat Jun 02, 2007 3:13 pm (GMT -4) Radioactive Dating Method ‘Under Fire’ Andrew A. Snelling In most people’s minds today, the radioactive dating of the earth’s rocks by geologists has supposedly proved that the earth is billions of years old. Yet most people really don’t know much about these radioactive dating methods. So slick and convincing are the presentations of results, particularly in glossy media and museum propaganda, that no one even bothers to question how these dating methods work, what assumptions are involved, and how reliable they are. Such questions, however, are highly relevant. The answers are not only instructive, but demolish the evolutionary geologist’s case for a 4.5-billion-year old earth. This in turn allows the evidence for a young earth and universe1 to ‘speak’ more loudly in support of the scriptural chronology of a 6,000-7,000 year age, which of course leaves no time for any ‘bi...

2007-05-26 05:50:00 Author: Eric Subject: The Shape of the EarthPosted: Fri May 25, 2007 11:50 pm (GMT -4) What Shape is the Earth In? An Evaluation of Biblical Cosmology J. P. Holding A rather common accusation made against the Bible in skeptical circles is that it teaches a view that promulgates a "flat earth" and contains other primitive cosmological/natural data like a solid, domed sky. Here we will have a look at some of the verses commonly used to assert this position. We begin with a bit of groundwork. It should be understood that the Hebrews, like all ANE cultures, obviously lacked the scientific terminology we use to describe things today. We should not expect descriptions of "tectonic plates" or of "molten lava". On a lesser scale, we will find that the Hebrews lacked key words which would have been most useful in describing cosmological phenomena. Furthermore, we will not address certain words and verses that use "phenomenological" langu...

How long has this planet been here? Ask most Christians this question and you will likely receive a quick, self-assured answer. All would be well if you could count on receiving the same answer! However, some will very quickly tell you that the earth was created during creation week and can be no more than six to ten thousand years old. Other Christians will tell you, with just as much confidence, that the earth is 4.5 billion years old. This is no minor discrepancy! What adds even more to the confusion is the fact that you can find both opinions within conservative evangelical circles. You can even find both opinions within the ranks of the few Christian geologists with Ph.D.s! Let me assure you that this is just as confusing for me as it is for you. ...

2007-04-28 18:25:00 Author: Eric Subject: RADIOACTIVE AGE ESTIMATION METHODS Posted: Sat Apr 28, 2007 12:25 pm (GMT -4) RADIOACTIVE AGE ESTIMATION METHODS - Do they prove the earth is billions of years old? How old is planet Earth? There are enormous differences of opinion. The most common view is that Earth is approximately 4.5 billion years old.1 Others say it is older or younger. The lowest age defended on a scientific basis is in the 6 to 10 thousand year range. Evolutionism, of course, requires billions of years to support the plausibility of life's emergence and of subsequent Evolution from "amoeba" to man. Theoretically, Creationism remains workable within a wide range of age estimates. Scientists have proposed numerous age estimation methods. Most systems promoted by Evolutionists involve radioactivity. Various radioactive elements are involved, including Carbon-14, Uranium-238, Thorium-232, and Potassium-40. By the way, it is important to understand that most rock strata &q...

2007-04-24 06:23:00 Author: Eric Subject: Evidence for a Young World Posted: Tue Apr 24, 2007 12:23 am (GMT -4) Evidence for a Young World by D. Russell Humphreys, Ph.D. Here are fourteen natural phenomena which conflict with the evolutionary idea that the universe is billions of years old. The numbers listed below in bold print (usually in the millions of years) are often maximum possible ages set by each process, not the actual ages. The numbers in italics are the ages required by evolutionary theory for each item. The point is that the maximum possible ages are always much less than the required evolutionary ages, while the Biblical age (6,000 years) always fits comfortably within the maximum possible ages. Thus, the following items are evidence against the evolutionary time scale and for the Biblical time scale. Much more young-world evidence exists, but I have chosen these items for brevity and simplicity. Some of the items on this list can be reconciled with the old-age view only by making...

A Geologist Talks Peak Oil & Canada
2007-04-06 05:32:00 I'm always on the lookout for articles like the one below.I know that we have a choice to either stay with a major focus on using the oilsands to drive our economy or invest instead in cleaner and more sustainable forms of energy. Eventually we (and our descendants) will be left with depleted supplies of fossil fuels. It's up to us now to decide on how fast we want this to occur. It's obvious to me that the faster we extract oil from the oilsands, the faster we'll use it up, or rather the faster the United States will use it up. What's the rush? It's not going anywhere sitting in the ground, except for maybe up in value.I like to focus on solutions. The problem is that our economy is driven by the destruction/development of the oil sands. The development of oilsands is causing massive greenhouse gas emissions (in turn contributing to global warming), illnesses due to pollution, ecological degradation, and is attached to other unresolved issues. The solution starts with ending g...

Note: the human fossil record is not covered in this chapter, but in chapter 12. Evolutionists say, ‘Paleontologists have found many examples of transitional fossils for creatures such as birds, whales, and horses.’ The fossil record: prediction of evolution? Scientific American claims that the placement of fossils in the geologic record was predicted by evolution and is strong evidence for it. But it can’t even keep the ‘facts’ straight. But one should not—and does not—find modern human fos...

Gadsby The interpretation of Genesis 1:1-2, as it applies to the Gap (Ruin-Reconstruction) Theory, revolves around four major points: 1. The alleged (by Gap Theorists) difference in meaning between the Hebrew verbs BaRa' (" to create") and aSah ("to do", "make", etc.). Gap Theorists say that 'aSaH cannot mean "to create" and so therefore Exodus 20:11 which speaks of Gods "making" ('aSaH) everything in six days must refer not original creation but a supposed re-creation (described Gen. 1:2ff). 2. The grammatical relationship of Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2. Gap Theorists affirm that the grammar allows, or even requires, a chronological hiatus between the events described by these two verses. 3. The translation of HaYeTHah in Genesis 1:2. Proponents of the Ruin-Reconstruction Theory translate: "the ...

The gap theory is an early and significant attempt by Christian theologians to explain the apparent short scale of world history found in Genesis, in order to reduce or remove conflict with the popular belief that geologists since 1700 have provided undeniable evidence that the world is exceedingly old (currently estimated at 4.5 billion years). In W.W. Fields’ book, Unformed and Unfilled, p. 40, he writes, 'One of the men who is perhaps most responsible for the origin and popularity of the gap theory is Thomas Chalmers (1780-1847), a famous theologian of Scotland, and founder of the Free Church of Scotland.'
Geology, Geography, & Archaeology :: Origin of the Oceans
2007-03-06 21:40:03 Author: Eric Subject: Origin of the Oceans Posted: Tue Mar 06, 2007 3:05 pm (GMT -5) Origin of the Oceans by Frank Sherwin, M.A. Secular scientists are unclear as to the origin of anything: the universe, our solar system, the earth, the oceans, or the creatures that inhabit the oceans. Where did the oceans come from according to evolutionists? Baby boomers may remember this "just-so story" described in the popular Time-Life book series (that includes a veiled swipe at the Biblical explanation while bowing to naturalism). Finally the day came when the falling raindrops did not hiss away in steam, but stayed to start filling the crevices and corners of the naked planet. Then it rained, and the accumulation of the seas began. The accumulation did not take place (in the opinion of modern geologists) through "the greatest deluge of all time" that has so often been described. So far as anyone can tell, it may merely have rained as it rains today. Nature ...
Plazes.com - Geolocation Community
2007-03-02 21:35:01 Here's a rare rave review - I found Plazes (it's a startup from Germany) as a plugin through Netvibes - it's a unique mashup that tracks peoples' whereabouts by geocoding where their laptop is or via their cell phone. Plazes has dual utility - it tracks where your contacts are in real time, but it also allows users to add favorite destinations - wifi hotspots, coffee shops, railroad stations, offices - they can inhabit. My hang out is Javaholics coffee shop, I call this "Plaze" my home. Here is a snapshot of Javaholics (the X) with other Plazes added by users: When I'm out, I can SMS Plazes.com to set my location via GPS. Centered in my new location, I can use Plazes mashup to locate the free wifi, coffee shop or gas stations in the area. Furthermore, users can comment on the locations - bad coffee? history of the building? Finally, I can invite contacts and monitor where they are in real time. Here's a map of where all the Plazes users in San Francisco are on March 1 at 11...
Geologically Yours
2007-02-26 23:11:00 For some reason, I just can't get excited about rocks. I am very interested in what we can learn about Earth's history from the geologic record, but I have so far failed in my attempts at generating interest in actually studying rocks. At first I thought it might be an issue of timescales (since rocks don't "do" anything in an observable timescale), but this couldn't be it--after all, I did my undergraduate work in astrophysics, where the timescales are so large they sometimes become incomprehensible. Perhaps familiarity adds to this; I see rocks almost every day, but I only see a planetary nebula if I look through a telescope or find pictures other astronomers have already taken. Whatever the reason, I want to care about rocks, but I haven't been able to yet.Maybe the Death Valley field trip in two weeks will help change this. Or maybe I just don't have a geologist's heart. |
