All We Are is Dust in the Wind
2009-09-25 13:06:00 SEPTEMBER 23, 2009: The Australian Outback visits Sydney – the nation’s largest city. It was Nature reminding Man that it cannot be taken for granted and will not be ignored. A Special Thanks from Keep Laramie Dinos
2009-09-06 21:14:00 All of you who have visited the blog or visited with us in person and via e-mail, we would like to thank you for your vocal and continued support of the museum through closure. Because of you, we will have a geological museum again, a unique historical, scientific and educational Wyoming gem on the University of Wyoming campus. We would especially like to thank the Mears family, who have made such a generous gift to the museum so that the ball can roll in the direction of reinvention. Imagine; finally, after years of talking and wishing, those who visit and use the museum will have one that is even better than before. It's unfortunate that a crisis had to arise in order for the magnitude of importance of the museum to be realized by the upper echelon of university administration, but they finally seem to understand. We would also like to thank Department of Geology and Geophysics Head Art Snoke for the effort he has expended in concert with Foundation Director Ben Blalock to esta...

Friday Mountain Blogging
2007-12-14 20:18:00 This is Oregon's Mt. Washington. At 7,795 feet it's not the most impressive of the Cascade volcanoes and since it hasn't erupted for several thousand years it doesn't get the attention of Mt. St. Helens. The picture was taken at McKenzie pass, altitude 5,300 feet. The lava flow in the foreground is about 2,500 years old. The Indian name for the mountain was Squaw Tit since from a distance it resembles a woman's breast.Click on picture for larger image.

Good news / bad news in Peru
2007-09-25 12:01:00 Well, in case you haven't heard the news yet, it's a case of good news / bad news for the folks in Peru with the recent meteor impact. The good news -- that illness they came down with wasn't all in their heads. The bad news -- the illness is a side-effect of arsenic poisoning. It turns out (as the BBC briefly alluded to a few days ago) that the ground water in the vicinity of the new impact crater contains high levels of arsenic. The heat of the meteor's impact vaporized enough of this water to create an arsenic-laced fog around the crater....
Meteorites, the Media, and Mass Hysteria
2007-09-21 20:31:00 When I first heard about the recent supposed meteor impact in Peru, and the sickness it allegedly brought to locals, I was just going to let things go by. Something odd happened in a remote area, and it seemed pretty easy to write the mess off as a miscommunication. But this mess seems to be building up quite a head of steam in the media, so I suppose it's worth a further look...
