2008-01-27 18:51:00 Written by John Wesley In our society, the study of language and literature is the domain of poets, novelists, and literary critics. Language is considered a decorative art, fit for entertainment and culture, but practically useless in comparison to the concrete sciences. Review: 1984 by George Orwell
2008-01-14 11:00:00 1984. I was five in 1984. The Berlin Wall still stood. Thatcher was busy castrating the unions, Reagan eyeballed Chernenko and the world teetered on the brink of a few atoms. Oh and Tommy Cooper died live on telly. Another taff bites the dust. But the world survived even if Tommy didn’t. And there was no Oceania. So ...
Ban books? Ban ideas, ban imagination, ban a future
2007-12-09 00:26:00 To ban a book is to ban an idea. Some ideas are good; some are bad. But good and bad are judgments each of us must be free to make ? and learn to make. At S&R ? as do so many people in diverse media everywhere ? we discuss ideas and express our opinions about them. We try to not suppress the ideas with which we disagree. Rather, we point out what we see as flaws and attempt to persuade others by providing better ideas. The current flap diverting our attention from more pressing matters involves “The Golden Compass,” a movie derived from the first book in a trilogy called ?His Dark Materials? written by Philip Pullman. His novels and the movie (review) have irritated the Catholic Church, which alleges a secularist agenda and fears the film would drive children toward Pullman’s books. The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, which has published a 23-page denunciation of the film, says: The Catholic League wants Christians to stay away from this movi...

Pinoy Big Brother, George Orwell and Burma Connection
2007-10-23 15:35:00 Though not a fan of the popular show on Kapamilya TV, Tutubi was able to take these pictures of Pinoy Big Brother house on three locations shown below. He doesn't find it entertaining watching a bunch of "eye candies" sleeping and living inside a house full of cameras to simulate "reality," the still present flimsy gimmick of the network to create "reel" love teams and the apparent lack of transparency in the effect of the text votes on who will next be evictedOk, but what about the title?During the oppressive rule of the British in Burma, Eric Arthur Blair was a member of the British Imperial Police Force in Burma in the 1920s. Eric left Burma and decided to become a writer using the pseudonym George Orwell. His first novel was titled "Burmese Days." One of his later novel, the futuristic "1984," tells of a dystopian society watched carefully by Big Brother-- the omniscient, omnipresent head of the oppressive government. The phrase Big Brother is now used to refer to any oppressive...

Pagsasalin kay George Orwell
2007-08-30 14:34:00 Insired by Jego, who has begun translating CS Lewis into Filipino, I begin my translation of George Orwell’s Animal Farm. I took the liberty of changing the setting from England to the Philippines. ... [ This is a content summary only. Visit PinoyBlogoSphere.com for full links, other content, and more! ]
George Orwell - Describes being Shot By Fascist Sniper
2007-08-17 23:59:00 I have been about ten days at the front when it happened. The whole experience of being hit by a bullet is very interesting and I think it is worth describing in detail. There seemed to be a loud bang and a blinding flash of light all around me, and I felt a tremendous shock - no pain, only a violent shock, such as you get from an electric terminal; with it a sense of utter weakness, a feeling of being stricken and shriveled up to nothing. It was at the corner of the parapet, at five o'clock in the morning. This was always a dangerous time, because we had the dawn at our backs, and if you stuck your head above the parapet it was clearly outlined against the sky. I was talking to the sentries preparatory to changing the guard. Suddenly, in the very middle of saying something, I felt -- it is very hard to describe what I felt, though I remember it with the utmost vividness. Roughly speaking it was the sensation of being at the center of an explosion. There seemed to be a loud ...
Fat - Thin Quotes - George Orwell

1984 - George Orwell
George Orwell
2007-04-26 14:39:00 During my school years, one of the few authors I read, (apart from Tolkien) was George Orwell. At the time, I was fascinated with his books, "Homage to Catalonia", "The Road to Wigan Pier", and "Down and Out in Paris and London". A feature of Orwell's writings, was that he always seemed able to see both points of view. Thus, although he was a committed Socialist, he powerfully portrayed the failings of his own ideological supporters. "If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear." "Sometimes the first duty of intelligent men is the restatement of the obvious. " George Orwell Quotes

Finished Reading George Orwell?s 1984
2006-12-16 16:11:01 GEORGE ORWELL’S 1984 is a very disturbing book. Not just because of the fact that much of the book talks about Winston Smith’s torture—both mental and physical. The book paints a very bleak picture of the future. I realize that some Americans have compared Oceania to America under the Bush administration, but this isn’t a fair comparison. It’s not even an accurate comparison for the most part. It’s hard to believe that humanity could disappear because of an oligarchy of powerful rulers who want to stay in power. I personally think that Orwell must have had some dark area in his brain to be able to think up the whole plot and the intricate detail of the Inner Party’s workings.
