Peter Golenbock may write Yankees histories, but he's rooting for the Rays

Mickey Mantle, image via Wikipedia By BOB ANDELMAN Sportswriter Peter Golenbock is one of my heroes, a guy I want to be like in many ways when I grow up. For now, however, I?ll settle for just being to call him a friend. The major characteristic I admire about Peter is his ability to be working constantly. He?s always writing a new book, always engaged in an envious research project. Actually, more than one. As a guy who also makes his living writing books, it drives me nuts. Let me give you an example. The first time Peter was on my show, he was promoting his hotly controversial first stab at fiction, 7: The Mickey Mantle Novel. But while he was setting the New York media community on fire with wild tales of the Mick getting up to bat with Joe D?s gal, Marilyn Monroe, he was already hot at work with actor Tony Curtis on his autobiography and on a history of Brooklyn. When I had him back to talk about those books, he was chomping at the bit to talk about his George Steinb...

Joe Girardi meets with George Steinbrenner for first time as New York Yanke
2008-02-17 23:22:00
Joe Girardi was summoned upstairs for the first time. The new manager of the New York Yankees met Sunday with owner George Steinbrenner, who hadn’t spoken with Girardi since the former catcher interviewed for the job last October. “It was great to see him. He was doing well,” Girardi said after Sunday’s session at Legends ...

CNN reports that Mitt Romney has officially ended his bid for the Republican presidential nomination. Romney is quoted as saying that if he were to continue his campaign he would be forestalling “the launch of a national campaign and be making it easier for Senator Clinton or Obama to win.” He went on to say ...

More Steinbrenner Horse Crap and Why HR's Are Bad [Aaron DeRosa]

"I think the most important thing is whoever we hire, give 'em a chance because he's not getting the '96 Yankees. He's getting an even younger team or for the most part a team in transition. Give him a little while,'' Hank Steinbrenner said, "We want to win the World Series every year. We're not stupid enough to think we can do it. Of course, we'd love to win the World Series next year.'' While I buy the sentiment that New York is a bit impatient, let's call it like it is. The 2007 Yankees are, on paper, a better team than the 1996 Yankees. Just a look at the basic numbers: 1996 Team Stats: .288 / 162HR / 830RBIs / 871 Runs 2007 Team Stats: .290 / 201HR / 929RBIs / 968 Runs So, a more potent offense. But surely the pitching isn't as good:1996 Team Stats: 4.65 ERA 2007 Team Stats: 4.50 ERA Younger? Actually, the average age of the 1996 Yankees was 29.7 or so, while the 2007 Yankees was about 31.Perhaps it's because there is more talent in the league nowadays that the Yan...

Say it Ain't So...So Long Joe [J. Mark English]

Its official. The long drawn out wait is over. The Yankees brass down in Tampa have finally put an end to the Joe Torre era.All Joe did with the club was to take them to the playoffs for 12 straight years. He won four World Series, won the AL East division 10 teams, including 9 years in a row between 1997-2006. The Yankees have had a successful run over the last decade in a half that is hard to maintain in the modern day sports era. He may be impossible to replace, and is assured to have many job offers thrown his way starting tomorrow. Here is more from the Associated Press:Joe Torre is out as manager of the New York Yankees, rejecting a substantial pay cut after the team failed to make it past the first round of the playoffs for the third straight year. Torre turned down a $5 million, one-year contract Thursday that still would have made him the highest paid manager in baseball. Bench coach Don Mattingly is the leading contender to replace Torre, who led the Yanks to 12 straig...

Shoutout for Joe Torre
2007-10-09 07:21:00
So, the Yanks lost tonight - the third straight year they didn't go on to the World Series after making it into the playoffs, and everyone's disappointed, and George said the other day that if the Yankees didn't progress then Joe Torre might be finished as Yankee skipper...But let me say the obvious: Third straight year that the Yankees didn't make it to the series after getting into the playoffs? For any other manager, that would be cause for the owner offering a hefty long term contract. How many other teams make it in the playoffs year after year - in the case of the Yankees and Joe Torre, 12 years, to be exact, with World Series wins and all.But that's not the most important reason that Joe Torre deserves credit and continuation, in my book.In the end, baseball is just a game. What lasting value it has comes from the humanity and lessons its players give to the world. And when it comes to that, no one holds a candle to Joe Torre. He has brought to baseball a whole new l...
Boss of old: George Steinbrenner says Yankees must win or Joe Torre likely
2007-10-07 23:56:00
Win or else! That was George Steinbrenner’s message to Joe Torre before the New York Yankees played the Cleveland Indians on Sunday night. With the Yankees trailing 2-0 in the best-of-five, first-round playoff series, Steinbrenner reverted to the blustering boss of old and said Torre likely wouldn’t return as manager unless New York reaches the ...

George Steinbrenner Jokes About How He?s Depicted On ESPN?s ?The Bronx Is B

NEW YORK (AP) - George Steinbrenner wants TV viewers to admire his cuddly side - and his good hair days. Asked whether he likes how he’s depicted on ESPN’s new miniseries ”The Bronx Is Burning,” the New York Yankees owner joked via his publicist: ”They always show me angry; they never found a softer, kinder, ...
George Steinbrenner Defends His Hair
2007-07-20 06:02:00
All week the thing that’s been on everybody’s mind is what George Steinbrenner thinks of his portayal in “The Bronx is Burning.” Well, the verdict is finally in and Steinbrenner is angry, but according to his publicist Howard Rubenstein, it’s mostly because of how the series is portraying his finely groomed head of hair and stylish wardrobe. Rubinstein said one inaccuracy Steinbrenner talked about related to his personal grooming. “What he is saying is he didn’t like the hair they put on the guy,” referring to actor Oliver Platt. “George’s hair is more neatly trimmed; he goes to the barber regularly. He didn’t deal with the inaccuracies other than the wig they put on him really wasn’t appropriate.” Steinbrenner also related through Rubinstein that Platt’s clothing was un-George-like. “He said they put him in a blue blazer and he thinks he dresses better than the actor,” Rubinstein said....

George Steinbrenner Comes to the Aid of Victims of a Fire in the Bronx...

Spending a lot of time in New York City and being a baseball fan, we often know about the legend of George Steinbrenner and his sometime tenuous relationships with players, coaches and managers. As well, he is often criticized for the Yankees spending and perhaps playing a large role in the financial disparity of franchises in the game today. Well, I have seen George Steinbrenner show a lot of heart to players and with charity work, and yesterday he offered to help out nine victims of a horrific fire that engulfed a Bronx row house in the same vicinity where the Yankees play by paying for their funeral arrangements. Some of us may hate or like Mr. Steinbrenner for his massive ego and theatrics in the past, but he stepped to the plate for a family in a time of need, and you only have to respect what he’s done.
