WordsDay: Jefferson no Lion in Winter in ?Twilight at Monticello?
2008-05-29 18:00:00 Alan Pell Crawford?s Twilight at Monticello: The Final Years of Thomas Jefferson tries to simultaneously be a Jefferson lovefest and an attempt at balanced history. Jefferson himself was a man of well-documented contradictions?he said ?All men are created equal,? yet he owned slaves; he opposed strong central government, yet he made the unilateral decision to buy the Louisiana Purchase; he suffered under crushing debt yet spent lavishly beyond his means. It?s perhaps no surprise, then, that a book about Jefferson might be filled with contradictions, too. Crawford, like most Jefferson defenders, tries his hand at explaining away inconvenient contradictions. Take slavery, for instance: ?Although he was sincerely opposed to slavery, Jefferson simply could not imagine a realistic way to end it,? Crawford writes. ?Jefferson genuinely believed that all men were equally free moral agents who functioned at their best as individuals?a position convenient for the slaveholder but less so for ...
Maryland vs. George Washington set for 2008 BB&T Classic
2008-05-21 13:09:00 The Maryland Terrapins have been slotted to face the George Washington Colonials while the Virginia Tech Hokies will meet the Navy Midshipmen in the 2008 BB&T Classic, reports the Washington Post. The men's college basketball event will be held December 6 and be televised by MASN.The announced lineup doesn't seem very inspiring at first glance. While it would have been great several years ago, Maryland vs. George Washington isn't all that compelling now. Maryland has all but become an NIT perennial while the George Washington program fell last season into outright disarray. Navy did improve in Patriot League play last season but to credibly believe that it can take Virginia Tech is a stretch. While granting that the BB&T Classic does raise money for charity, the seemingly irreversible falloff in its marquee value points to an event that has outlived its usefulness. There have to be better ways to raise money for charity than this. There are certainly better ways for the teams invo...

Is Japan trying to militarise space?
2008-05-14 15:00:00 “This is a major change in Japanese space policy,” says space policy expert John Logsdon of George Washington University in Washington, DC, US. For many years, scientists and engineers have run the country’s space programme for their own purposes. Logsdon told New Scientist that the change will “allow Japan to carry out military programmes as long ...

What Does John McCain Have In Common With George Washington?
2008-04-22 05:08:00 TEMPER TEMPEREvidently it is perfectly acceptable for other Presidents and candidates to have tempers. It is acceptable for anyone but John McCain. Strange, isn’t it? LBJ had one. They say JFK’s was explosive. Lincoln had one. And George Washington’s temper was so bad he was known to punch out arguing officers, and had a mouth so foul he is secretary would shake in terror when he would was “poetic”, so what’s wrong with John McCain having one? (Even Ronald Reagan had one).It seems to me if a person isn’t capable of losing his/her temper there’s something wrong. Not ...

John Adams on HBO: 5: Jousting of Ideas
2008-04-07 22:54:00 An intellectually powerful and sophisticated Episode 5 of John Adams on HBO last night - the most vivid so far in the mini-series in portraying the contest of political philosophies that made this country. Indeed, the most compelling I've ever seen on television. We see:.John Adams, who believes the best (and only reliable) path to a continuing, free America is a strong central government. Towards this end, Adams even wants a monarch-like way of addressing the President - an idea soundly defeated in the nascent U.S. Senate. Adams protests that he's not really a constitutional monarchist, but it's difficult to see exactly the ways in which he is not..Thomas Jefferson, who shocks even Abigail Adams with his famous statement that "the tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants" - not insignificantly putting patriots ahead of tyrants in the blood letting. What's really at stake here is Jefferson's view that government is not the pr...

George Washington women seek redemption vs. Rutgers in NCAAs
2008-03-30 17:48:00 The George Washington Colonials are again faced with a rematch in this year's NCAA women's basketball tournament, this time against a #2 seed Rutgers squad that walloped GW by 25 on the Colonials' own home court. Since that debacle, #6 seed George Washington has run off 22 wins out of 25 games. The late season run includes an upset win over #3 seed California last Monday out on the west coast, decided by a last second jump shot from Sarah-Jo Lawrence. Rutgers though represents another quantum leap in opposition. While George Washington will almost certainly give a better effort in this Sunday afternoon's rematch, the Colonials remain significant underdogs to reach the Elite Eight and will need to be at their very best to win. Nonetheless, reaching the regional semifinal game for a second straight year marks a watershed occasion for the program.Start time will be approximately 2:30 p.m. from Greensboro, N.C. on ESPN2 television and GWRadio.com streaming audio.----Relevant links: ...

George Washington meets Cal in NCAA women's 2nd round
2008-03-25 00:03:00 The George Washington Colonials take a major step up tonight in the NCAA women's college basketball tournament, matched up against #3 seed California for 2nd round action. The Pacific 10 power Golden Bears comes into the pseudo-home court at Stanford, Cal. with a 27-6 record and #10 national ranking, two days off a dominant win over San Diego. Our local George Washington squad from the Atlantic 10 has a nearly identical 26-6 record, a #6 seed and #20 national ranking. GW won a first round rematch against Auburn last Saturday, 66-56, opening up the winning margin only in the final minutes of the game. Conference player of the year Kimberly beck was held to 3 points (though she did contribute with 7 assists) while Jessica Adair took up the slack with 17 points and 13 rebounds.----To advance to the sweet 16, the top Colonial players will all have to be on their best games in front of what should be a hostile crowd. Then again, hostile NCAA tournament crowds are nothing new to the Georg...

Pantheon entry: George Washington
2008-02-18 20:58:00 Washington in action Who: Soldier, father of nation, all around good guy. Why: An obvious choice for my new pantheon, George Washington was, in the truest sense of the word, an amazing man. A consummate man of action, Washington wasn't an inventive genius in the manner of a Franklin or a radical intellectual like Thomas Paine. Nor was he necessarily a man of reflection like Jefferson. All Washington did was win the War of Independence and steer the radical experiment that was the United States for its first eight years. In other words, others talked, and Washington did (although talking had its role). Character was Washington's calling card. How important is character in a leader? Consider that Washington's greatest achievement isn't what he did- it's what he didn't do. Although encouraged by many close to him, Washington refused to be the first King of the United States. In a move unprecedented in secular world history (St. Thomas More, but he did so for religious ...

George Washington holds Saint Louis to record low 20
2008-01-12 18:16:00 The George Washington Colonials did Thursday night what no other D-1 men's college basketball team can claim to have done in the shot clock era, held an opponent to only 20 points. The Saint Louis Billikens were held to a record low 20 points by GW in a farcical 49-20 game. The result was a combination of offensive ineptitude with numerous missed shots by Saint Louis combined with deliberate defensive pressure applied by George Washington. The Colonials blocked 11 shots and made 9 steals against Saint Louis. George Washington is now 1-0 in Atlantic 10 conference play, off until a Wednesday night outing at Fordham.Relevant link: Yahoo, Colonial Hoops

George Washington, UMd rout women's basketball foes
2008-01-07 15:59:00 The George Washington Colonials women's college basketball team routed one-win Brown by a startling score of 98-22 Sunday to set a school program record for margin of victory of 78 points. GW's overwhelming triumph comes off a much closer but much more meaningful win several nights ago at #18-ranked Auburn. The Colonials' resurgence comes a month or so after the team had suffered losses against Rutgers and UNLV among others that faded the early season hype for the squad. The return of key players from injuries that had caused starting lineup discontinuities is being credited for George Washington's revived positive run.Not to be outdone, the #5 ranked Maryland Terrapins simultaneously clocked Clemson in ACC action, 110-46, a 64 point margin in its own right. James Madison beat UNC Wilmington by 40 points, a lopsided outcome in any other context than this blog post.Relevant link: GW Hatchet

George Washington Would Hate Your Team: Cubs at Gnats 6:05 CDT
2007-07-05 22:16:00 In life, there's no reason to lose to the Washington Nationals. Ever. Because I'm starting to like our team (well, certain members of out team, at any rate), I'm going to be charitable and chalk yesterday's loss up to patriotism on the part of our Cubs. Alas, the Fourth is over, the last firework has been lit, the last rib has been eaten, and the last kid has been wheeled into the ER for sticking a sparkler up his nose. In other words, time for you to go back to losing. Taking the Hill today for the Cubs is Sean Marshall. There's been a lot of contrversy on this site as of late regarding Marshall, and I plan to put it to rest once and for all: I give you exhibit A: and Exhibit B: Note particularly the similiarity around the ears. Here's a shot of the ears dead on: I don't think there's any question what we're dealing with here. Legolas's opponent today? The sinister Jason Bergmann (1-5, 3.47), rumored to be a staunch communist and hater of freedom. If we lose, the ter...

George Washington Carver
2007-05-07 14:49:00 This was taken at the George Washington Carver National Monument, about fifteen minutes from Joplin. George Washington Carver National Monument is one of my favorite places near Joplin to go for a short hike. This statue is of the brilliant African-American botanist George Washington Carver as a young man. He was born into slavery on the site of the monument, and lived with the Carver family after slavery was abolished. It was on this farm that he gained his great passion for botany. He later went on to accomplish amazing things in that field.Over the next few days I'll show you some of what I saw yesterday on my hike.
