Georgie James: Places
2008-01-17 04:16:00 Georgie James: PlacesI know the name sounds like it should be a solo artist but Georgie James is actually four people: John Davis (formerly of Q and Not U), Laura Burhenn, Andrew Black (formerly of The Explosion), and Michael Cotterman (formerly of The Loved Ones).Places is Georgie James' debut album. It was released on Saddle Creek Records in 2007. I know I'm a little late on this release but give me a break, it was a busy end of the year for me.The truth about Georgie James is their all star line-up is just the beginning of their appeal. Their dueling male and female vocals are reminiscent of the New Pornographers. The music is a great dancy indie pop similar to Mates of State. The things that makes Places great is also its biggest weakness. The album is poppy toa fault. The sugary sweet sound of 70s-era power pop is evident in every hand clap, every "bah bah bah" back-up vocal, and every whimsical piano riff.Rating: 7.0/10MP3: Georgie James "Only Cause You're Young"

Georgie James’ Places due Sept. 24th
2007-09-05 04:11:00 Q and not U’s break-up in 2005 was a sad one, especially after their final effort Power proved to be much better than a typical break-up album. The band more or less split in two, as guitarist/vocalist Chris Richards continued to perform solo under the name Ris Paul Ric and drummer John Davis formed Georgie James with Laura Burhenn. Richards’ solo work as RPR consists primarily (or maybe entirely) of his debut, the poorly-titled Purple Blaze, which I spent many a hazy night listening to in Summer ‘05. My favorite song on that album has always been the title track “Purple Blaze:” [MP3] Ris Paul Ric - Purple Blaze Georgie James was formed in 2005 when Davis met Burhenn (who had already recorded 4 self-released albums of her own) and proposed the two start a band. They worked on a handful of demos, then took their songs to a studio to drop the self-released CD Demos At Dance Place. Based on the strength of that initial release, they signed to Laborato... |
