Heating And Cooling With Geothermal Heat Pumps
2008-05-21 00:00:00 The term geothermal literally means Earth/Ground (Geo) Heat (thermal). Geothermal, or ground source heat pumps, take advantage of the constant ground or groundwater temperatures. These heat pumps use geothermal energy to heat and/or cool your home. A refrigerant loop with a compressor extracts heat from one side (the ground) and pumps it to the heating loop ...
How Does Geothermal Heat System Work
2008-05-06 03:32:00 Geothermal heat originates from Earth’s fiery consolidation of dust and gas over 4 billion years ago. At earth’s core - 4,000 miles deep - temperatures may reach over 9,000 degrees F. Today we drill wells into the geothermal reservoirs to bring the hot water to the surface. Geologists, geochemists, drillers and engineers do a lot of ...

Geothermal energy – what is it, and can it be a good renewable energy
2008-03-23 13:19:00 Geothermal energy is the energy harvested from the warmth of the Earth core, which can be trapped to produce electricity in geothermal power plants that use it to warm water for industry, agriculture, bathing and cleansing. Even though it is in use worldwide, its real potential as an alternative energy source is not fully utilised, thus geothermal may offers an actual alternative in future environment-friendly energy source. There are several ways to use this geothermal power:Wells of geothermal power.A geothermal reservoir is a mass of fractured rock in the Earth’s crust, saturated with hot water or steam. In order to bring the water or steam to the surface, wells are drilled into them. If the fluid coming out is hot enough, bubbles will occur and cause the water to flow to the surface, if not, the wells may need a pump. Power plants make use of the hot water or steam from the wells by redirecting it to a steam turbine and a generator that produce electricity. These plants are wor...

UNITED STATES: New Geothermal Power Supply On Steam For Millions In Northwe
2008-02-25 02:17:00 Vulcan Power Company has announced the G3 Power Plan, a preliminary plan for green grid transmission upgrades to deliver a "green gigawatt" (1,000 megawatts) of clean geothermal power to Los Angeles and Las Vegas from massive natural steam zones located in northwest Nevada.Scientists at the Great Basin Center for Geothermal Energy at University Nevada Reno estimate that 2,500 megawatts (MW) of geothermal natural steam exists in northern Nevada, according to the recent press release of director Dr. Lisa Shevenell. This clean steam fuel could generate power for 2.5 million people, corroborating the US Senate majority leader Harry Reid (D-NV) observation that Nevada is the "Saudi Arabia of Geothermal".There has already been about 240 MW of geothermal online in Nevada for 15 years, which is evenly split between Nevada and California utility buyers Sierra Pacific Resources and Southern California Edison Company, the nation's largest renewable power purchaser. But new green grid upgrades ...

Geothermal heating: bring comfort to your world
2008-02-12 03:42:00 Up to 50% of energy bill is for heating and cooling, people are always finding new way for efficient usage of energy for this 'most household expenses'. How about geothermal heating systems ?.Geothermal system is a system which capture the heat from below the frost line ( about 4 feet deep ) where the temperature are constant at 50 degrees Fahrenheit all year long ). During the winter, the heat pumped from the ground and uses it to warm the air in your home. In the warmer summer months, the processed is reversed, taking heat from your home and transfered it back into the groundWith up to 75% energy efficiency offered compared to the conventional heating and cooling system, geothermal system is offering a great savings. Furthermore in term of environmental, the U.S. Department of Energy forecasts that by the year 2030, geothermal heat pumps can provide as much as 2.7 quads per year of renewable energy. This is very significant, as U.S annual energy appetite in is 81 quads per year...

Top 5 Reasons Geothermal Energy Works
2007-12-04 00:44:00 Part of a series5. You can have one in your backyard. The cost of having a geothermal system in, literally, your backyard, for a 4,000 square foot house is estimated to be $15,000 to $20,000. The payback would only take 5 to 10 years, as well. [reference]4. Maintenance costs are lowGeothermal pumps have very few parts and require very little maintenance. Once up and running, the system can be mostly left alone to produce energy without the need to repair parts of the system.3. The amount of land needed is lowUnlike nuclear power plants, wind farms or solar farms, a geothermal pump does not require much land. Like mentioned in #5, if you live in a suburb, you could install one in your backyard tomorrow. Larger pumps for commercial electricity generation have also been built, and those too require very little land.2. Energy output is unaffected by changing weather conditionsUnlike wind power or solar power, there will always hot magma under the surface of the Earth. It?s predictable wh...

What to call it? Geoexchange or Geothermal?
2007-08-05 20:44:00 Often the two names are used synonymously, but for the ground loop heat pump, geoexchange seems more appropriate to me. While the heat (thermal energy) is coming from the ground (geological), geothermal has the connotation of tapping into volcanic like activity. The term geoexchange implies that you are exchanging the heat or cool in your house with the ground. It’s kinda difficult to cool your house with an active volcano. Despite what I think, both terms are used interchangeably. The most common being geothermal heat pump system. However, when I think of geothermal I think of the photo above, not something that would go in my front yard.Photo by my Mom (no really, she took this picture in 2005)
