East Germans Getting Nostalgic For Socialism
2008-10-19 03:08:00 Although there were reportedly some serious problems with East German socialism (the Trabant, the ubiquitous vehicle, was a piece of junk), with the recent chaos in world capitalism, many East Germans are now saying that they would rather have socialism than capitalism. A recent survey found that 53% felt that the free market was "unsuitable" and 43% said that they wanted a socialist system rather than a capitalist one.Sales of Marx's Das Kapital have tripled since last year and increased 100X since 1990, although sales as a whole remain low. The publisher expressed amazement and said that he never thought the book would sell well again. He said that even bankers and managers are reading it to try to figure out what's going in with the turmoil in capitalist economics. The switch from socialism to capitalism has not worked out very well in the East. Unemployment and poverty are very high. The outskirts of Berlin, Leipzig and the Baltic shore and doing well, but the rest of the regio...

Briton wins damages for hotel with too many Germans
2008-06-04 09:08:00 A British holidaymaker was awarded compensation by a court because there were too many German tourists at the hotel he booked in Greece, newspapers reported Saturday. David Barnish, 47, paid 4,000 pounds (5,100 euros, 8,000 dollars) to take his wife and three daughters to a resort in Kos, but the family were unable to take part in entertainment or children’s activities because they were only organised in the German language, the Daily Telegraph and Sun reported. Barnish sued holiday company Thomson for breach of contract, claiming it had failed to disclose that the Grecotel Park hotel was used almost exclusively by Germans. I think you already know what you can find after the break…

Germans Toast the Anniversary of Their Beer Purity Law
2008-05-07 14:48:00 The German 'Reinheitsgebot,' or beer purity law, started 492 years ago. Germans find reason to celebrate the drink even the mild-mannered Benjamin Franklin once called "proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." Brewski. Suds. Cold one. Pint. Cerveza. Call it what you will, beer may be the world's most traditional beverage. First brewed in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia over 8,000 years ago, it rates a mention in the epic of Gilgamesh, and its earliest chemical traces -- from 3500 BC -- have been found in the Godin Tepe in the Zagros mountains, in present-day Iran. Beer is a model internationalist. The German Reinheitsgebot, or beer purity law, celebrates its 492nd birthday on April 23. On Wednesday, Germans mark their own contribution to the history of beer, the Reinheitsgebot, or purity law, which strictly regulated the price and ingredients of beer at the start of the 16th century. It's an excuse for parties and brewery tours across Ger...

Germans search for new anti-cancer drugs from TCM
2008-02-25 06:20:00 CM NEWS - A group of German scientists launched a systematic compound search in 76 Chinese medicinal plants that are believed to be effective against malignant tumours and other growths. The success rates so far are satisfactory. Curing cancer with natural products ? a case for shamans and herb women? Not at all, for many chemotherapies to fight cancer applied in modern medicine are natural products or were developed on the basis of natural substances. For instance, taxanes used in prostate and breast cancer treatment are made from yew trees. The popular periwinkle plant, which grows along the ground of many front yards, is the source of vinca alkaloids that are effective, for example, against malignant lymphomas. The modern anti-cancer drugs topotecan and irinotecan are derived from a constituent of the Chinese Happy Tree. In his search for active ingredients, Professor Dr. Thomas Efferth of the DKFZ has been concentrating on herbal remedies from traditional Chinese medicine with p...

Frank Rich on The ?Good Germans? Among Us
2007-10-14 20:19:00 The Van Der Galiën Gazette has a more balanced comment as he does acknowledge that "the treatment of prisoners is truly embarassing to the US. Gitmo, Abu Ghraib, etc. have done great damage to America?s image." Unfortunately he also writes, "With regards to the treatment of prisoners Rich compares the US to? Nazi Germany (as liberals are so fond of doing these days with anyone and everyone they disagree with)." This is certainly true of some liberals, and Michael might have been overly-influenced by a recent attack on him from one of the more off the wall liberal blogs in a dispute which did involve the over-use of Nazi comparisons. I do have three objections to this, the first being that, while sometimes true, this is hardly characteristic of the majority of liberals. Secondly, Rich was quoting conservative writer Andrew Sullivan, not a liberal, in making the Nazi comparisons. Thirdly, there are some situations in which Nazi comparisons are valid.
