Ginger Fig Streusel Tarts With Honey Lavender Ice Cream
2009-07-14 07:32:00 Thank you guys for toasting Barbara with us in my last post. I know it meant a lot to her and it did to me. (And yes, those were my feet!). It's been a tough journey for her and I often told Bill I'd give my last shirt to get on a plane and try to be of some help (laundry, groceries, you know the drill), crack up some stupids joke or just hold someone's hand. He understands. He also adds that he doesn't like when I travel, saying that I always prepare some good dinners for him to eat while I am gone, I rarely leave dessert. Wrong. Cookies, I always make cookies. This past weekend however, when I went to Veronica's in Virginia to teach what we now call a Pastry Bootcamp (a nice one), leaving four of these Ginger Fig Streusel Tarts with some Lavender Honey Ice Cream. He ate the coffee-chicory macarons. Go figure. He actually did it (unknowingly) right as we had plenty of the tarts to celebrate our 11th anniversary. Still feels like we are within the first 5 years. Very much loving...

Chai Cake with Honey-Ginger Cream
2009-04-21 07:32:00 For April?s installment of the Cake Slice, the bakers voted for a tea based cake. Chai tea was the cake?s main flavor components. Chai tea literally translates to ?spiced tea?; some of the spices found in chai tea can be pepper, cardamom, and cinnamon. A common practice is to mix the tea with milk to make lattes. That is exactly what the recipe instructed to do.The chai tea bags steeped in warm milk, were cooled and then used in the cake mix. The tea tinted the cake to a lovely mushroom color. The recipe also called for more cinnamon and cardamom, which added pleasant warmth to the cake. The cake itself was light and airy, very much like a chiffon. Keeping with chai tradition, honey sweetens the cake's icing. The recipe took a conventional cream cheese icing and added more ?chai? flavors to it. To start, it called for honey as a sweetener. Make sure to use a very liquid honey to ensure that one gets an icing that will drizzle down the sides of the cake. I do not believe the honey I ...

Ginger Cookies
2008-12-23 22:30:00 Ginger is awesome. Sure it has a pretty strong smell and extremely pungent taste, but it?s an excellent spice to use in cooking. Ginger tea is great for those cold winter days. Try Ginger Pear Tea for example. Ginger tea is very invigorating when you have a cough or cold. Ginger is also great for settling stomachs.I?m visiting home for the holidays and I noticed there is a new convection oven in the kitchen. And so, I thought it would be great to make some Ginger Cookies!!Ingredients:2 cups of all-purpose flour½ tsp baking soda½ tsp baking powder2 tsp ground ginger½ tsp ground cinnamon½ tsp ground cloves¼ tsp salt1 cup of dark brown sugar½ cup unsalted butter1 egg, beaten¼ cup crystallized ginger1 tsp vanilla extractDirections:In a mixing bowl, combine the following ingredients: flour, baking soda, baking powder, ground ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and salt.In a food processor or mixer, combine the sugar, butter, egg, crystallized ginger, and vanilla extract. Pomegranate Hibiscus Tea & Honey Ginger Yogurt Verrines - A Virtual Hug
2008-12-05 06:36:00 I play well with food. We get along nicely.I can twirl it around, bake it, cut it, stretch it, play it up, play it down.We spend many hours together everyday. Swishing sounds of the whisk play with the silence of my thoughts. We do get along well. Sometimes though I wish I weren't alone in the kitchen.Peeling fruit, brewing tea. Impatiently waiting for that drop of honey to fall from the spoon. Sometimes I wish I had Barbara with me in the kitchen.I know she would sit on the vintage stool by the counter. For about 5 minutes before heading in there with me.I know she would pour us a glass of wine while helping me pick the buttercream from my cheekLike she virtually wiped the tears from my heart last year when I lost someone I had never met but already loved. She would remind me to dance even if only in my head.In fact I believe she'd turn the radio louder and we'd dance right in the middle of spun sugar and flour clouds. Then we would fall loudly on the sofa and laugh...and hug.Barba...

2008-09-23 04:03:00 OK, so I made these almost a month ago while I was down in Florida for Labor Day weekend and am only now getting around to posting this (hey, I have a wedding to plan! Ginger Cookies
2008-08-29 09:25:00 When I redid this site a couple of months back, I added a link on the top navbar where readers could request a recipe. Honestly, I don't know what I was thinking. This is something you would probably find on Tarla Dalal's or maybe Marta Stewart's official site, not a teeny-weeny amateur cook aspiring to bake a perfect loaf of bread someday! But clearly, others have more faith in me than I myself do and I already have close to 12 recipe requests lying in my inbox. To everyone who submitted one, please be patient which I figure it out! Here is the first one in the series - Ginger Cookies.Personally I don't like ginger-flavoured anything except ginger tea. But when Soma from Kuwait requests Ginger Cookies, she gets ginger cookies. Soma, hope you try and enjoy this recipe. What I Used:Makes 24 cookiesAdapted from allrecipes 2 cups all-purpose flour (I used maida) 3/4 cup butter, softened ...

Royal Foodie Joust Entry: Orange Ginger Chicken Tabbouleh
2008-08-12 06:00:00 This month's Royal Foodie Joust brings on 3 ingredients that seem to have left a few people stumped: citrus, ginger and whole grains. Having just written about Tabbouleh at Short Order Mom, I knew right away that I would make a new tabbouleh-with-a-twist, and so I did. This was really delicious. I love the bright flavors of orange, ginger and mint, and combined they are refreshing and wonderful. Orange Ginger Chicken Tabbouleh2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts - cubed1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepperSea or Kosher salt to taste1 large orange - zested and juiced*1 teaspoon fresh ginger, minced2 tablespoons sliced green onion1/2 cup cracked wheat1 cup warm water1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley1 tablespoon fresh chopped mint1/2 cup cucumber, peeled, seeded and diced*If you do not have 3/4 cup orange juice from the freshly squeezed orange, add enough store-bought to make that amount. The zest should amount to 1 tablespoon total.1. Toss chicken cubes with 1/2 teaspoon of the ginger, 1 tab...

Why Eat Kimchi?
2008-05-28 21:01:00 Kimchi, also known as 'gimchi' or 'kimchee' is a fermented Korean food, equivalent to our sauerkraut. Eaten as a side dish, its main ingredient is cabbage. Kimchi has been eaten for the last 3000 years, and only recently (12th century) began to be prepared with the addition of chili peppers. Other variations today include kimchi made of radishes, scallions, or stuffed cucumber. Kimchi is seasoned with ginger, garlic, onions, and sometimes brined shrimp or fish sauce (anchovy based).Fermented foods like kimchi are known as healthy foods, and not just for the vitamin content (Vitamins A, B1, B2, Calcium, C, Carotene). Ann Louise Gittleman, author of The Gut Flush Plan writes that it's because they "feed and sustain the probiotic population in our digestive tracts," keeping our guts in good shape. Named one of the top five "World's Healthiest Foods" by Health magazine, kimchi contains lactic acid bact...

Clean Well Ginger Bergamot Foaming Hand Wash ~ scented body products
2008-05-17 19:34:00 Clean Well?s Foaming Hand Washes are nature-based, germ-fighting cleansers that make use of botanical essences in a two new, intriguing ways. First, they feature scents created by the well-known natural perfumer Mandy Aftel of Aftelier. Second, they introduce a component called Ingenium, ?a patented formulation of essential plant oils proven to kill 99.99% of the germs that make you sick.? According to Clean Well?s website, the primary antibacterial ingredient in Ingenium is thyme oil, a natural substitute for triclosan or other chemicals. The other ingredients in the Foaming Hand Wash include aloe, white tea, and oat extract as skin conditioners and ? oops! ? a dash of sodium lauryl sulfate as lathering agent. The Hand Wash?s fragrance, however, is completely natural. I had a hard time choosing one scent, and in the end I bypassed Lavender Absolute and Orange Vanilla in favor of Ginger Bergamot, in an effort to step beyond my usual floral-sweet tastes. Real bergamot oil and ginger...

Quick Microwave Upma
2008-04-23 03:41:00 Upma is a great breakfast food - quick to make, filling, and very nutritious too. When I was a child, we had it every weekend for brunch amongst other goodies. But often as a treat it found its way into our school lunch boxes!! Over time I have worked to simplify the recipe so that its microwave ready for a whenever snack!!Dry Ingredients:1 cup sooji (cream of wheat)1 tbsp chana dal1 tbsp urad dal1 inch piece ginger, grated fine2 large dried red chillies, crumbled1/2 tsp mustard seeds1 tbsp fresh cilantro, chopped fine1 tbsp ghee1/3 cup cashews, choppedTo Make Upma:Salt to tasteWarm water, as requiredMethod:Heat the ghee in a large non-stick pan. Protective Antioxidants In Every Bite
2008-04-22 00:29:00 Cheryl Forberg, author of Positively Ageless and nutritionist for the NBC reality series The Biggest Loser, recommends that we eat our antioxidants. In this FirstLook at Positively Ageless, Ms. Forberg focuses on the value of foods high in vitamins, specifically C and E, both of which offer protection from free radicals. Instead of downing vitamin pills, aim to add various types of fruits and vegetables to the diet. These natural foods offer both tremendous varieties of antioxidants and phytochemicals which operate successfully together within the body. Ms. Forberg writes that scientists have "barely scratched the surface of knowing what these food components do individually, let alone in teams."Strongly flavored vegetables like garlic, ginger and onions, when fused together in a dish (think curry) provide antioxidants, antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties. Individually, each extends relief from in...

Tomato Soup with Ginger and Oregano
2008-04-21 05:39:00 When we were on vacation last week, I had tried a couple of interesting cobbled together creations. Well, we had this condo with a really well equiped kitchen so I felt that it would be quite a waste not to use my time at least doing what I so love doing, - cooking. However, naturally since the supplies in terms of spices etc were minimal these turned out to be different from what I might have otherwise done. However, this soup worked wonders with grilled cheese that I made with pepperjack cheese to lend a little zing. Tomato Soup Recipe Makes 4-6 servings Ingredients 2 tbsp olive oil2 onions finely chopped4 cloves of garlic finely chopped1 large piece of ginger, peeled and grated8 vine-ripened tomatoes quartered1/2 cup canned tomato puree2 tbsp crushed peppercorns1.5 tsp salt3 tbsp butter1 tsp garam masala powder1 tsp fresh oregano1 cup lowfat (2%) milk Method of Preparation 1. Heat the oil and saute the onions, garlic and ginger for 2-3 minutes.2. Add the tomatoes, tomato puree, p...
Sticky Date, Ginger & Macadamia Nut Puddings with Butterscotch Sauce
2008-04-20 02:59:00 So this is the first recipe with my homemade Glace Ginger. When I first started making these last night I could never have dreamed that they would turn out so wonderful. They are rich and decadent. They have that gingerbread smell to them. These are not for the faint hearted, they are a meal in themselves. I think the next ones need to be made in smaller ramekins or make one large one and cut into small slices. It was a struggle between the heart and the tummy to finish one. The butterscotch sauce was heaven and complimented the puddings so well. I have taken a good old Women's Weekly recipe, tarted it up and enriched it in a very decadent way. So for all of you in need of comfort like I am at the moment, please take comfort in one of my gorgeous puddings.IngredientsPuddings1 and 1/2 cups of dried dates1/4 cup of glace ginger1 teaspoon of bicarbonate soda1 cup (250ml) boiling water50g butter, chopped1/2 cup of firmly packed brown sugar2 eggs1 cup of self raising flour1 and 1/2 cups...

Glace Ginger
2008-04-18 01:04:00 I have had a brain freeze over the last couple of weeks as to what my next recipe is going to be. I have been fretting. I don't know why? I suppose all the job hunting has put me in a very focused place. I am only in the last 5 days getting interviews for jobs I applied for 3-4 weeks ago. I don't know what is happening with the job market at the moment. It seems to be very different than the last time I actually had to go out and apply for one. I have kinda just fell into the roles I have had. So this is new territory for me. All the waiting kinda makes you feel sick and nervous at the same time. The interviews are now coming through thick and fast which is making my head spin. So cross your fingers for me that I get the one that I want.Sorry I have digressed. Back to the ginger. I was walking through the supermarket the other day talking to myself, saying I have to come up with something soon that is worthy. Then I saw the most beautiful looking hands of young ginger. I picked on...
