Tokyu Hands
2008-10-04 10:43:00 I been going for jogs in the middle of the night with my friends who live in the same apartment as I do. We go jogging along the Yagami River but when it's one in the morning it can be very very scary. Now Japan is a country that has one of highest suicide rates in the world, and jumping off a bridge isn't an uncommon way to commit suicide. So as we were running along the river, we had to cross many bridges and two of them had flowers tired around the poles. One of my friends also mentioned someone committed suicide on one particular bridge we happened to run across. Now this wasn't exactly the happiest thing to be talking about when it's the middle of the night, dead quiet (except for the sound of the river) and extremely dark! I was certainly freaked out! However the run was worth it though, I felt so much better afterwards (I had burgers that evening -_-;;).I know I talked about burgers in my last post (as well) but I have been making home cooked meals as well.1. Cooking past...

Olympics
2008-08-28 11:25:00 Okay, I wrote this post about two weeks ago before I left to go to Suzhou and Shanghai, so it may seem a little old, especially now that I'm back in Beijing.Studying Chinese in Beijing during the 2008 Beijing Olympics is probably one of the best decisions I've ever made. The atmosphere is great. I love the Olympics, it's the only time I can spend all day watching sport without anyone nagging me, as everyone is doing the same thing. My favorite things to watch are of course my favorite sports, the Men's Basketball, Women's Volleyball and the Men's Tennis. I also always watch the Diving, Gymnastics and Track & Field but I've also developed a new liking to Fencing. A few day ago my friend Han and I went shopping at the Dongwuyuan Fuzhuan Pifa Shichang (the Zoo Fashion Markets). Although there was a large selection of clothes and everything was super cheap (20, 30RMB anyone? = AUD$3.5, $4.70), the clothes were so horrendously ugly that I wouldn't wear any of it even if they ...

08.08.08
2008-08-09 11:26:00 So much has happened since I last blogged. I now have long hair, lost 2 kilograms of weight and most surprisingly a shoujo manga like storyline has surfaced. The first is due to a magical thing called extensions, the second is due to my dislike of Chinese food and the third... well, it's complicated.Sometime last week I went to have dinner with my oldest cousin and my grandparents. We went to a place called, "Hai Di Lao" which roughly means "Scoop Under the Sea". It's a popular hot pot restaurant and the "Scoop Under the Sea" comes from the act of scooping the bottom of the hot pot for meat/vegetables and other wonderful things. My first cousin and I at the restaurant.Look, I have hair!!!They have waiters who make noodles from a piece of dough. These guys dance and do all sort of acrobatics while making it.Our hot pot. It was very very spicy. My cousin and I outside the restaurant.Last Saturday night I went to the GongTi Xi Lu clubs with my French friends from Uni. We first went to ...

Beijing Summer
2008-07-28 10:06:00 Here I am in Beijing... in Starbucks, again. I heard that there was going to be free wireless connection in the city during the Olympics but obviously it hasn't started yet. So now I am forced to drink overpriced black tea and ice cubes just to use the net. Oh well, at least the connection is fast.It is so very hot and humid here. A stark contrast from the SNOW (very very light flaky snow, but snow nonetheless) that swept over the Sydney's North Shore this afternoon. Snow in Sydney??!! That's the craziest thing I've ever heard. I'm going to ask my sister if she saw any.I have to wake up at 5:30am every morning to get to class (I'm studying Chinese at Beijing Language and Culture University at the moment) because the University is so far away from my house. I live East, close to the city but the University is North West outside the 4th ring (the city of Beijing is surrounded by rings with Tiananmen Square being the center. The 2nd ring is the ring that basically surrounds the C...

Taiwan & Thailand
2008-07-12 17:28:00 I wrote up a quick entry for my last post as I was just about to hop on a plane to go to Taiwan and later Thailand. It seems I have returned from my tropical journey and all I can say is Sydney is damn cold! I really hate the cold, but I don't mind New York or Beijing kind of cold because at least that means 24 hour heating. Shanghai or Sydney cold isn't actually cold enough to have that kind of heating and using the air con non stop is such a waste of energy, and thus I am cold at home as well as cold outside. So I have to say I thoroughly loved my tropical holiday in Taiwan and Thailand. My first stop was Taipei, Taiwan where my family and I stayed for 2 days. We went to the Night Markets on the first night which was a lot of fun. The Night Markets are just roads of small food, clothes and accessories stalls. Bargaining is a must there, but you can't bargain off a lot though since they prices are already quite cheap. I was trying to put on a Taiwanese accent while bargaining but...

Uber Quick Post
2008-06-30 13:13:00 This is a uber quick post for two reasons. 1) My bandwidth is kaput, 2) I need to pack and 3) I need to paint my nails a nice bright shade of pink. Okay that was three reasons, the last one came up in an epiphany of nail polish fumes. So apart from EXAMS! These have been my activities for the last week.SundayWent shopping with Dave for a tie. We found a nice one in Louis Vuitton then we moved onto other shops. Since I was still sulking about sacrificing my Chanel I went to buy a Fendi to cheer myself up. I guess it was my 21st birthday present to myself. I sound like such a brat but I'm only bratty over bags.Dave and I also checked out the new Apple Store that just opened in Sydney on George St. It's really quite big, but I'm a PC girl myself. Blah.TuesdaySince I have no life I went to the Sydney Flashmob Freeze. It was so much fun, best 3 minutes of my life. My friend caught us on video, hopefully she'll post it up soon. They said there were 2200 people who attended this event a...

What I did when my parents were away...
2008-05-16 15:43:00 WednesdayWeather: Sunny (26 degrees).Top: Black Cue top bought in Sydney.Bottom: Pencil Skirt bought in Syndey.Shoes: Black peep toes, present from friends.Bag: Gucci Jolicoeur.Accessories: Wolford stay ups and Heart necklace.I always enjoy a dressing up, so I jumped at the chance when I met up with my friends Cindy and Adam for dinner. They told me they were going after work so they would be in their suits, I almost convulsed with glee as I rarely ever have a chance to wear corporate gear, being a non-commerce student at all. So I raided my closet, but went a little bit overboard in the "secretary" look department. When I met up with my friends they glared at me weakly and said, "Mel you look like a PA."That was totally not the look I was going for..."No!!! I'm a divorce lawyer.""No you're not. Divorce lawyers don't dress like that.""How about a PR Exec then?""That might work.""Yay!"So in the end I was still happy with my new found role as a PR Exec. I think I've been watching ...

Sick of Presentations
2008-05-06 15:51:00 FridayWeather: Sunny (27 degrees).Top: Uniqlo white shirt bought in Japan.Bottom: Kookai denim shorts bought in Sydney.Shoes: Chunky black heels bought in Beijing.Bag: That Longchamp bag (Le Pliage) everyone is carrying.Accessories: Brown belt and Tiffany & Co. Open Heart necklace.I wore this for a friend's birthday dinner after spotting some model lounging around in a similar outfit in Harper's Bazaar. Of course copying a model probably does wonders for ones body image, but I was still relishing on the fact that I had lost 4 kilos while I was in China. My skinny friends are all dieting at the moment awaiting their trip to Japan. The skinniest one of them is on a Fruit Diet!!! I almost fainted when I heard that. It's almost as bad as when I go on detox (she can still eat carbs though). However, dieting isn't going well with one of them... she's constantly trying to persuade people to go eat Deep Fried Mars Bars with her... I don't even know what that is! I'm not detoxing...

Beijing Baby!
2008-04-23 14:29:00 Wow I know it's been about a zillion years since I last blogged but I've been so caught up with Uni, work and friends I've barely had time to sit down in front of my computer.Loads have happened during the past month. I know I sounded like I was whining about going to Keio University instead of Peking University in my last post but now I'm extremely extremely happy that I'm going to Keio. It was such a challenge to get into (a Professor had to even vouch for me) and I definitely won't be taking this chance for granted. Having said that I also get to go to Beijing and study an intensive Chinese course at the Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) for 4 weeks right before I go to Japan for my 6 month exchange. So I kind of ended up with the best of both worlds. The only thing is, some of my best girlfriends are leaving for Japan in the beginning of July for a 3 week holiday which means they miss my 21st birthday!!! Holy *a4i&*^% can you believe I'm turning 21?! I mea...

When Married People Snort
2008-04-07 03:01:00 Saturday night we were invited to dinner by a couple we don't know well, the parents of a girl that Rooster plays with at daycare.Until Saturday we had never socialized with them beyond running into them at the school and the odd meeting at the local playground.I like them both, but I was a little nervous.[How long would it take for these cool people to figure out what a complete and utter dork I am?]When we arrived, their daughter (my daughter's friend), appeared at the top of their staircase to greet us.She was completely naked. She stretched her arms to the heavens and spread her legs wide apart."Ta DA!" she yelled. Her mom blushed."Ta DA!!" she yelled again jumping down a step. She jumped down one step at a time and with each landing she announced her impressive nakedness with another, "Ta DA!"Her mom hurried her back up the stairs to dress her, but before she went she told us that her husband was taking a shower because he had just finished cooking. In an act of extreme culinary ...

Shanghai Baby!
2008-03-20 13:30:00 I know I'm really late with my China posts but you have to realize I'm sloth lazy.As you know I spent a few weeks in Suzhou just hanging out but since it was snowing so hard for the first time in like 85 years, I didn't get to go out as much as I would have liked. Besides there are only two relatively good malls in Suzhou: Taihua (which has almost completed the construction of Suzhou's first Louis Vuitton store) and the Matro shopping mall on Guan Qian Jie (the only shopping street in Suzhou). The real shopping fun began when my cousin Oli, his best friend David and I headed for Shanghai (about an hour drive from Suzhou). We only spent a day there and let me tell you what an exhausting day it was. We managed to shop in over five malls and a mega Zara store and spent a combined total of 20000RMB ($3125AUD).There are definitely some excellent malls and department stores in Shanghai, and since I'm terrible at remembering names I can't tell you what they were called but all you rea...

Shell of A Post for Silly Photo Display Purposes
2008-03-16 20:45:00 My friend Deana and I rented a car to drive to Nashville. The problem with making an "economy weekend special" reservation is that Enterprise gives you a flying tic tac and calls it a car.The Flying Tic TacI was a bit worried when we arrived at our hotel. In the parking lot, Angry Road Rage Man unloaded a mouthful of bile on me for no good reason."If you were a guy I'd be in jail right now!" he screamed. No more coffee for YOU, Mr. Road Rage Man!Then my hotel's elevator walls were covered in pony hide.Is it me or does red pony hide just SCREAM super classy? At first, I worried that my bed might vibrate, but I was immediately distracted by the dress on display in the lobby...Ouch! Pointy! The dress was made entirely of pink crayons.Where could someone most appropriately wear such a garment? We asked the dimly lit hotel clerk to recommend a good, local bistro so we could eat before the Ani DiFranco show."Hmmm," she said, "local BEE-STROW?"I knew what was coming from experience."Oh! I know...

Talisman
2008-02-18 22:00:00 For K?s 40th birthday, Grandma Seattle gave him a weekend pass for two, meaning she offered to fly in for the weekend so that he and I could go away for two nights.Two. Nights.[Swoon.]We chose Valentine?s Day weekend and made some fancy schmancy (non-refundable) reservations at a B & B in the mountains. Grandma Seattle was all set to arrive last Friday afternoon. But then The Mayor?s arm broke.Neither K nor I felt comfortable simply walking out the door without making sure Grandma knew all the routines that had quickly developed around his arm. We didn?t even know if she could lift him in and out of bed.Once everything was in order, we finally left town on Saturday afternoon. Our fancy schmancy B & B turned out to be fancy only in terms of the price. It was nice enough, but our overall response was,?Eh.?After a totally random prime rib buffet meal at a nearby mountaintop inn without a liquor license, we headed back to the B & B where, for some inexplicable reason, I at an...

Lots of Snow.
2008-02-04 08:08:00 I can really feel the holiday mood kick in these days. I'm not doing much except sleeping late, getting up later, shopping and eating. All would be perfect if the temperature raised 30 degrees.I thought I would do some bargain hunting but without realizing (I haven't been converting RMB into AUD very well) the pices for clothes these days are actually quite high. A simple top seems to be at least 500RMB (roughly $80AUD). When did material items become so expensive in China? The other day I bought a skirt for 1200RMB which I regretted later on because I certainly wouldn't have bought the same skirt for $187AUD. Besides that, my stocks plummetted before I was able to sell them (stupid volatile market!!!) so now I'm becoming really poor... thank goodness for the Chinese New Year red pocket. Now one thing I didn't have to buy was this silk dress I pulled out from my grandmother's closet. She had it made for her over a two decades ago and since she couldn't wear it anymore I was ab...

I'm not exactly beach ready yet. I need to run a few times around the neighborhood, do a few laps in the pool and watch that yoga video on repeat, then I'll definitely be ready... although I'm still very pale. I'll probably start frying before the sun even touches my skin. If you see a stupid looking girl with her face covered with piles of clothing, sun baking at Manly Beach then come over and say hi. It will mostly likely be me. I have an obsession for keeping my face pale and my body tanned so I cover my face on the beach to the point of asphyxiation. I'm obviously not trying to create an extremely conspicuous differenc...

This shit is BANANAS!
2007-07-31 15:11:00 First off everyone must must must go to Bittersweet on Saturday night this week. It's at the Roof Bar @ Skygarden, 77 Castlereagh Street, so it's a pretty place, and it starts from 10pm to the wii hours of Sunday morning. Tickets are $15 prepaid (get your friends from UNSW to buy them off the Comsoc people, in fact find the vice president of Comsoc and tell her "Mel asked me to ask you when you were going to empty your hardrive on her computer?") and $25 at the door. Everyone with any hint of coolness will be there and since I trust that all of you are cool (why else would you be reading my cool blog then? Everyone replies: "Obviously for reasons other than coolness..." -_-;;), so you all must come and dance until you legs fall off!MondayWeather: Sunny (14 degrees Celcius).Top: Silver tulip dress bought in Newtown, Sydney & Baggy navy cardigan stolen from my Grandpa in Beijing.Bottom: Black opaque stockings.Shoes: Black satin heels, a present from friends.I felt slightly overdre...

We had high tea at the Swissôtel where I funnily enough, bumped into Ryo who was working. High tea was fantastic! I devoured the scones, sandwiches and mini cakes that looked delicious on display (but even more delicious in my stomach). I also got to congratulate Gala Darling for getting a job at Cosmop...

I frantically flipped through my outfits book (my outfits book is a book filled with squiggly arrows with descriptions pointing to badly drawn drawings of outfits I've seen other people, from fashion shows, from people on the street, from celebrities etc. wear that I like and is possible to create with my own wardrobe. It's fantastic when you need to go out in 5 minutes and haven't decided what tow wear yet) before rushing out of the house - makeup-less! - to go to art class. And who should I bump into but my 3rd Grade teacher who I admired so much as a little girl (you see my art class has a tuition college right next door to it, so he must hav...

Doggie Party
2007-07-13 17:10:00 This was from two weeks back I think. Joyce and Dickson held a birthday party for their baby Sam at Cafe Scrumptious (everyone should go visit the wonderful Cafe Scrumptious in Erskineville!). All the other doggie mummies and daddies also bought their babies along with them to celebrate. Since I don't have a doggie I brought my sister instead LoL.My sister loves animals and especially dogs. I on the other hand don't receive the same excited pulsations in my heart when I see animals. I mean my favorite animals are Dinosaurs (fascinating creatures they are). So I bought a stuffed toy along with me. My sister named her (during the car ride) Coco Chanel (if I had known, I wouldn't have brought her along in a Vuitton bag). Anyway, she's a labrador and she's 3 weeks and 3 days old. Don't kids have the greatest imaginations? It was very windy that day so my cardigan and pashmina didn't protect me at all, so despite my efforts to look good at the Doggie party, I ended up borrowing an ...

If you are a person with any taste in film then stay far far away from it. The first Hostel film actually wasn't too bad. It wasn't the most thought provoking film, but it was exciting, action packed and obviously sickening. This second film though, delved too much into the human emotions of the killers. I mean the audience doesn't want to see that! The killers who bid for their kidnapped prey are crazy sadists, so why would we want to understand and relate to them?! What made it worse was that the two killers we saw most of were from Desperate Housewives...

Going Out of Town
2007-04-30 15:46:00 John is spending the week with his folks, at least until Thursday when he has to be back for his class. I will be away at a conference Tuesday through Friday. I am looking forward to it but I am extremely busy at work with tons of phone calls and details. Everybody has a deadline of when they have to have my test completed by and so I'm the most popular person in town right now. The test that I give is only given by a small number of locations in the state and I usually get people from a 75 mile radius. Since this is a densely populated area, that translates into mega people! So I have today to get as caught up as I can. While I am gone, I have to get caught up on my class too. I'm having trouble with this instructor like I did with the last one. I emailed my first assignment to him and he told me to do it again. I looked at it and didn't know how to improve it so I asked him for more guidance. He ended up grading what I turned in and I got a 96% on it. It didn't need improvement...

Going out with a BANG! or 2 or three...
2007-04-21 22:16:00 Alright well the title of this blog is in reference to yesterday, a sad day for myself and all the guys that I work with. I've written many times about this bad area that we go into and almost everytime we are there, something goes down. Now Im sure most people in my shoes would be like, "Hey GREAT! No more getting shot at all the time!" and in that regards, I guess in a way it is a good thing. But what most people dont and cant comprehend is that as an Infantry soldier, my job is close within the enemy and to kill or capture them. If Im not doing that, then Im just sitting on the sidelines. Well, basically what has happened is just that. Our battallions area has changed slightly, and 90% of the bad area, to include the REALLY bad area has been handed over to another company, who until the other day (working with us) had never been shot at or anything. My company will still maintain a small slice, which makes us slightly optimistic. If anything goes down, we will always be right th...

2007-03-16 06:20:00 Post Mardi Gras - Summer's Going out with a Bang not a WhimperI was enticed out to the Mardi Gras party at the last moment - a friend (yes, that's you C. C.!) sweetly offered to get the tickets on the afternoon of the day.Next day, another buddy sent me a bunch of photos of the pre-party Parade. And, now that the squillions of Mardi Gras posts are over, I could consider a final one! And, if I were going to post any of these photos, what would I start with but Parade People Highlights, such as the 'Priscilla Cast Duplicates' - Bernadette and the 'Chorus Fragment':And follow that by:Obviously a spontaneous moment, not posed in any way!And then finish up with another classic (I know just how far I can push this particular post!):But these fireworks continued, even after the Party:Can't decide which is more spectacular: our parade efforts or those of the gods.

Going Out On A High Note
2007-02-07 15:21:06 So here?s one. I?m resting between sets of bench presses, and I notice a guy come in and drop his gym bag next to the squat rack. He throws three plates onto each side of the bar, warms up with a quick check of his nose hairs in the mirror, and then settles in for his lift. What luck: I am present for the setting of a new land speed record, 0-300 in about ten seconds flat. My high school band teacher always insisted that the proper way to warm up is not to pick out the highest note you can play and to blow it as long and loudly as you can. Likewise, a warm up in the gym needs to be a thoughtful process that maximizes strength while minimizing the risk of injury. The specifics aren?t critical; you?ve warmed up adequately when you?re ready to hit your first heavy set at full weight. My father, in his home gym, first picks up all the ping pong balls so inconsiderately left on the floor from the night before. I warm up with a 3-5 minute stroll on the treadmill, followed by stretch...

DIARY: Govt Museum visit
2006-12-22 00:19:00 DIARY ? A visit to the Museum ( Govt. Museum, Egmore, Chennai)28/8/2006 11:00 amAt the Museum, First floor, sitting on a bench.Cushionless sofa, actually. Listening to the music (lyricless) of A R Rahman (recognized him (Roja), dunno abt the rest of the music). Facing the life size portraits of past Governors of Fort St. George.Feeling fairly awed, calm, satisfied and lonely(and not in a bad sense). Since I am unaccompanied. I'm thankful for the solitude and the place to sit. It's a relief and a change to be alone. Nowadays, I never am alone.Saw 10 of Raja Ravi Varma's paintings. Got the list. See?Right to left, as I viewed: Mother preparing Vegetables, Water Carrier, Portrait of Ravi Varma, The Miser, A Native Noble Man, Retired Sepoy, Going Out, The Lady with the Mirror, Yasodha and Krishna, and their main one- Shakuntala.Wow! This was my first viewing of an original Ravi Varma. All the 12 governors are staring malevolently or disdainfully at me. Dunno which. Will have to ask th...
