I love the spectacle of the Cheltenham Festival which culminates with the Gold Cup on Friday afternoon. It promises ...

Gangtok, Oct. 28: The “black magicians” are back in town with a different name but the same intent. The all-Nigerian football team arrived here yesterday to take part in the 29th All India Governor’s Gold Cup. Last year, as GMHK Lions, the team had stormed into the semi-finals of the tournament, prompting the fans to dub them the black magicians. This time, the team will play under a new name — Nigerian Eagles. The team, which is part of the Nigerian Professional Footballers’ Association, consists of players from across the country who are either studying or working in India. Many of them also play club football.“We are happy to be back playing football in this wonderful place where people have so much love for the game. We have a number of good strikers and promising players in the side. We aim to lift the Gold Cup and we are working very hard towards that goal. We also promise an enthralling performance,” the team’s coach Fuja Tope told writer. The intent was very muc...

Gangtok,October27: Football mania is set to sweep Sikkim for the next 12 days with the 29th All India Governor's Gold Cup Football starting from today at Paljor stadium here. Sikkim's new Governor Sudharshan Agarwal inaugurated the tournament and the first match saw the local favourites-- Sikkim Football Association (SFA) XI locking horns with the JCT (Academy) although failed to win it. Buoyed by the last year's huge success, the SFA has left no stone unturned to cement the tournament in the national football scenario by inviting top national clubs and those from neighbouring countries.Six international teams, including an all Nigerian team would be the major attraction in this hilly region, where a total of 16 football clubs are participating. The international teams-- Nigerian Eagles, top two clubs from Nepal (NRT and Three Star), two from Bangladesh (Chittagaon Abahoni and Badda Jagarani Sangshad) and Bhutan XI-- were participating, SFA president Tempo Bhutia informed media. US Soccer team wins Gold Cup, what's next?
2007-06-25 21:25:00
Landon Donovan scored his 34th career goal, tying Eric Wynalda atop the career list, and Benny Feilhaber connected with an impressive kick to rally the United States to a 2-1 victory over Mexico on Sunday in the final of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, the championship of North/Central America and the Caribbean. It's the first time in 53 meetings dating to 1934 that the Americans fell behind Mexico, then came back to win.The victory extended the Americans' dominance over their border rival to the south and gave the United States a berth in the 2009 Confederations Cup in South Africa, a big date to prepare for the 2010 World Cup. The United States is 9-2-1 against Mexico since 2000, including 8-0-1 on U.S. soil. This CONCACAF win is huge for the US team, but what's next for them? Now they will be heading to the COPA America Soccer Tournament which is the South American Championships. They are a guest for the tournament, and will be playing with some unknowns. While Argentina and just about e...

US Beats Mexico for Gold Cup Crown
2007-06-25 05:49:00
The United States National Team with the Gold Cup trophy It wasn't a pretty road to the Gold Cup finals for US or Mexico. The semifinals saw the US squeak by Canada by a dubious bad call, while Mexico struggled to get more than one goal in on non-FIFA members and Gold Cup debutantes Guadeloupe.
CONCAF Gold Cup Finals
2007-06-24 23:04:00
I cannot think of a game that a team should be so ashamed to be winners of since Argentina beat England with the "Hand of God" goal. The USA beat Mexico 2-1 today in an absolutely pathetic show of soccer. Now my Foxsports channel seems to be non-operational so I had to watch the entire game on Univision, which only broadcasts in Spanish, so my comments are purely my own; I have not been influenced by the commentators at all! There was not a player on the U.S. team that I would have ranked over a 5 out of 10. Howard, the U.S. 'keeper, was put under pressure continuously by the team's porous defense from the opening minutes and had more trouble contending with bad back passes (three of them) from his own players than from the Mexican offense. The one save he had to make should have been caught but he gave away the corner instead. Where did they find Carlos Bocanegra? He looks like and plays like the old rhino, David Unsworth, and as much as Everton fans love our players none would e...

US Soccer Cruising So Far Through Gold Cup
2007-06-15 22:07:00
In what will be a very busy summer for US Soccer, with two continental championships, and an Under-21 World Cup to participate in, it has been so far, so good in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. In addition to being the only team to obtain the maximum nine points in the group stage, they are also the only
Weekend Quick Picks
2007-06-15 20:08:00
When I was doing mixed martial arts blogging, I use to have a feature prior to a big UFC or Pride card where I would pick the winners, and I was pretty damn good at it (still am). Most bloggers out there would really break down each fight and then offer a prediction. I'm too lazy for that shit, so I just offered "quick picks" with a very short explanation as to why I made the pick I made. Now that I've launched a rugby blog, I figured I may as well try my hand at picking rugby results as well. Guess we'll see how well I do. Again as I use to tell my MMA readers, if you want some in depth breakdowns, find another blog, you won't find that here. So...here we go...my weekend rugby & soccer picks:Tri NationsSouth Africa-26Australia-19Should be a very good match. I give the nod to South Africa as I feel they are entering the Tri Nations on a bit of an up swing, plus there's the fact that the Springboks are hosting this one. Bryan Habana will be missed, but they have plenty of w...

2007-06-13 14:18:00
The United States breezed into the Gold Cup quarterfinals by defeating El Salvador 4-0 in their most dominating performance of the tournament.DeMarcus Beasley scored twice while Landon Donovan and Taylor Twellman each netted a goal. Soccer: U.S. Looks To Finish Group Play Undefeated
2007-06-12 15:02:00
The United States takes on El Salvador tonight in their final Group B game. The U.S. have already secured a spot in the quarterfinals, but tonight they look to finish first in their group. They can take the top spot with either a win or a draw tonight. Winning the group would be huge for the Americans, because that would mean playing the 3rd place team from either Group A (Guadelope) or Group C (which is still pretty much up in the air at the moment) in the quarters. The U.S. holds a 14-1-3 record versus El Salvador all time. The U.S. got to this point in the tournament by defeating Guatemala 1-0 and Trinidad & Tobago 2-0 and enters the game with 6 points in the group. El Salvador defeated Trinidad & Tobago 2-1 and lost to Guatemala 1-0. They enter the contest with 3 points in the group. Right now the tournament is setting up quite nicely for the U.S., especially with Mexico already suffering a loss. The improvement of play between game 1 and game 2 is also very apparent. In the o...
Final Saturday Update
2007-06-10 05:05:00
Had a rough time today trying to fight for "internet time." Its always tough on weekends when I have my son because between him and my wife, I can't get on the computer! I shouldn't bitch though because the trade off is, I can watch sports all day long.Anyways...International TestArgentina-24Italy-6This game will be shown on tape delay Sunday morning at 8:00 am so I'll give you my thoughts after I watch the game tomorrow.Rugby Super League FinalsBelmont Shore-27Chicago Lions-21Chicago held the lead until the final minute of the game when USA Eagle Francois Viljoen scored the game winning try as Belmont celebrated their 4th Super League Championship. A full game recap can be found HERE.Gold CupUSA-2Trinidad & Tobago-0The USA dominated the entire game and looked like they shook off their rocky first game versus Guatemala. Gold Cup: USA vs Trinidad & Tobago
2007-06-09 08:27:00
The United States hopes to improve Saturday as they continue their quest to defend their Gold Cup title. The U.S. struggled Thursday night as they held on to defeat Guatemala 1-0. Clint Dempsey scored the lone goal in the 26th minute.Trinidad & Tobago lost their opener to El Salvador 2-1. This should be a nice test for the Americans, as T&T qualified for the 2006 World Cup this past summer. The U.S. will be without defender Oguchi Onyewu, who received a red card in the 73rd minute. He will be replaced most likely by Jay DeMerit.TRINIDAD & TOBAGOGK: Marvin Phillip (North East Stars), Daurance Williams (San Juan Jabloteh), Jan Michael Williams (W Connection FC);DF: Dwayne Jack (San Juan Jabloteh), Thomas Nickcolson (W Connection FC), Anthony Noreiga (Joe Public FC), Trent Noel (San Juan Jabloteh), Seon Power (Joe Public FC), Keyeno Thomas (Joe Public FC), Glenton Wolffe (North East Stars);MD: Romauld Aguillera (United Petrotrin), Christon Baptiste (Defence Force), Kerry Baptiste (J...
Reminder: Live International Rugby On Setanta Sports Tomorrow
2007-06-09 03:34:00
Just a reminder, if you live in the U.S. and have Setanta Sports, you can watch Live International Rugby, starting very early Saturday morning. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to stay up until 3:00 am to watch the New Zealand game live. My thinking is, I'm going to sleep in a bit and catch the first two matches on replay later in the day and watch the South African vs Samoa test live. I'm most interested in the South African game anyways. All Times Listed As Eastern (US):New Zealand vs France-3:00 am (repeat at 6:00 pm)Australia vs Fiji-6:00 am (repeat at 11:00 am)South Africa vs Samoa- 9:00 am (repeat at 6:45 pm Sunday)Setanta is also providing delayed coverage of the Argentina vs Italy match on Sunday at 8:00 am.As was the case last week, I will provide scores and quick notes regarding these games, as well as the rest of the Rugby action on Saturday. I will also post a recap of the U.S. vs Trinidad & Tobago Gold Cup soccer game tomorrow night.
USA Struggles In Gold Cup Opener
2007-06-08 06:14:00
It was a tale of two halves. The United States dominated the first 45 minutes, while Guatemala literally bullied the U.S. the final 45. Luckily for U.S. fans, Clint Dempsey was able to find the back of the net in the 26th minute and despite being down a man for the final 15 minutes or so, the U.S. held on for a 1-0 victory in Group B action. The U.S. will take on Trinidad & Tobago Saturday.

The 2007 Gold Cup Historic Races at VIRginia International Raceway
2007-06-04 00:00:00
The 2007 Gold Cup Historic Races at VIRginia International Raceway will celebrate the 50th anniversary of VIR?s opening in 1957. It was the weekend of August 3-4 that year, and Carroll Shelby won the feature race in John Edgar?s Maserati 450S, ahead of Walt Hansgen and Charlie Wallace in Briggs Cunningham?s D-Type Jaguars. We only get one chance to celebrate a 50th anniversary, and we?re planning to do it right. The date will be June 8-10, 2007, and we are already working on the details. On hand for the occasion will be a number of very (and we mean very) special guests and cars. Among our special guests will be Carroll Shelby, who has graciously agreed to serve as Grand Marshal, and the legendary motorsports journalist Chris Economaki, who served as the announcer for VIR?s inaugural race in 1957. There will be no featured marque, other than ?VIR History Cars and Drivers.? We have also commissioned a painting from artist Mike Mate, which will depict the most significant cars in th...
