2008-04-29 18:17:00 One of my favorite musical sub-genres is sort of an off-shoot of trip-hop, a sultry urban electropop district where the downbeat influence of Portishead meets up with all kinds of interesting characters dressed like David Bowie in the ’70s. California pure pop a la Burt Bacharach, for instance, which we find in the likes of Saint Etienne (and the solo work of singer Sarah Cracknell), Mono and Hooverphonic. These groups are almost always fronted by female vocalists, and every year or two I trip across another one that just blows me away. In 2002 it was Frou Frou, and in 2005 the duo’s singer, Imogen Heap, knocked us out with the brilliant Speak for Yourself. Black Box Recorder did two or three must-have CDs and singer Sarah Nixey’s solo debut last year was one of my Gold LP winners. You try hard not to gush over it, but when the sounds hit your ears you realize what you are witnessing is a masterpiece of its genre. Goldfrapp’s fourth album is that — a masterpiece of ethereal pop. Seventh Tree truly astonishes in mood. Listening to the ten tracks is like floating on a dreamy sea of melancholy. Yet the songs aren’t truly sad. The album starts off with “Clowns”. All acoustic guitars, strings, bass and Allison’s breathy instrument that barely articulates anything in the song. Her vocals come and go like a tide due to backward masking and tape hiss effects. With all this atmosphere you would expect the song to be about the loneliness of a clown. Nope. It’s actually about fake boobies, “Only clowns would play with those balloons/What’dya wanna look like Barbie for?/…Titties that live on and on and on...

2007-12-28 17:25:00 Okay, so the bootleg of Goldfrapp's new "Seventh Tree" album has been floating around the internet for the last couple weeks now, but I didn't notice it until Perez Hilton got to it. Oh well. Anyway, the Youtube link he posted to the song was broken, so here's an embed that works. I was apathetic at first, but it's growing on me. First thing you need to know is that this is nothing like anything I've heard from Goldfrapp before. It's very acoustic and mellow and... Alanis-ish? I don't know, I'm having trouble placing it, but this sounds a lot like something else. Comment if you have any ideas.

A primeira é mais conhecida como a mutante-que-atravessa-paredes,- em X-Men, e o segundo é o pecado mais íntimo de Kate Winslet, em Pecados Íntimos (filmão!!!).
