Google Apps: The Missing Manual
2008-06-04 03:17:00 This comprehensive and easy-to-follow new book enables you to explore Google's new office applications in detail. Once you do, you'll be in good company -- more than 100,000 small businesses and some corporations are already looking to take advantage of these free Google offerings. Google Apps: The Missing Manual teaches you how to use three relatively new applications from Google: "Docs and Spreadsheets," which provide many of the same core tools that you find in Word and Excel; and Google Calendar and Gmail, the applications that offer an alternative to Outlook. This book demonstrates how these applications together can ease your ability to collaborate with others, and allow you access to your documents, mail and appointments from any computer at any location. Of course, as remarkable as these applications are, Google's office suite is definitely a work-in-progress. Navigating what you can and can't do and -- more importantly -- understanding how to do it isn't always easy. A...
From Big G to Little Z: Google Apps vs Zoho Office Suite

Google Apps are a great choice for small-medium Mac shops
2008-04-21 23:53:00 Apple, Ink – As a Macintosh business consultant, Ive built up IT infrastructure for dozens of companies over the past few years. Most of these companies have been under 200 desktops and at least half Macintosh. I’ve just completed my first medium sized business move to Google Apps, and I have to say I am extremely pleased. Why I Love Salesforce.com Integration with Google Apps
2008-04-15 10:21:00 Etelos CRM, step aside. Is the end of software really here? Salesforce.com and Google Apps both offer business software as a service, and now the companies have joined forces. Salesforce for Google Apps will provide an integration of the enterprise-oriented application suites. The collaboration makes Google Apps available for all Salesforce.com customers at no added cost. Salesforce is also reselling the premier edition of Google Apps at an extra cost for larger and enterprise companies. I have been a longtime fan of Google Apps for small to medium organizations. Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoy using Outlook, but am no longer at the mercy of Microsoft Exchange ever since Gmail uses IMAP. As a former director of IT, I had to employ a dedicated Senior Exchange Administrator just to keep mail and Blackberries flowing. I wrote an ezine article explaining the benefits of Outlook and Gmail in IMAP mode. Add a Blackberry device to that, and you have a 3 way independent method of...

The Importance of Google Apps Engine

No Reason not to use Google Apps
2008-04-01 00:53:00 How did Matt and Brad organize RETechSouth, the conference presented by non-conference organizers? They used Google Docs, and shared the spreadsheet with the ad hoc organizing committee. The speaker list, the sponsor list, discussions on topics and speakers... all in one place and simple to use. Previously, the landscape of collaborative software was just too confusing for laymen adoption due to the high learning curve of a completely new application. Google Apps slyly provided a suite of Microsoft Office-like applications for normal folks and got them used to working the apps individually. The collaborative functionality turns on easily, and suddenly collaboration becomes a no-brainer accessible to even the tech-challenged. The only problem with Google Docs is when one needs to work offline, say in a plane or a ski cabin without wifi connection. Well, the blogosphere has been going wild today with the announcement that Google Apps will finally be usable offline using Google Gears...

But, don't worry!
Google Apps, "Hosting E-mail" Gratis
Hingga kini beberapa perusahaan penyedia jasa hosting e-mail masih membanderol harga "kapitalis" hingga Rp 1,5 juta per tahun hanya untuk hosting e-mail sebesar 100 MB. Dengan hadirnya Google A...

Customize the logo in Google Apps
2008-03-11 19:09:00 If you have a Google Apps account you can change the default Google logos to your own, putting all your stuff in company colors. Whatever I work with I always customize to give it the smooth Hack Your Day feel, so I needed to put my own logo on there, no question about it. It can pretty simply be done, all you need to do is go and manage your domain, click on domain settings and go to appearance. You will see that you can change the header image, although this will stay the same for all services. Be sure to make it exactly 143×59 or else it won’t work. For some reason Google crops bigger pics, but doesn’t put them in in the end. Another word of advice to Photoshoppers, don’t just downsize your pic if it’s a lot bigger. My logo was about 2400×1200 and it looked horrible. The reason probably is that you’re going too small, sizing a huge image to 300×200 is fine, but with this size it didn’t work for me. I got around it by changing ...

Is Google Apps the Next Microsoft Office?
2008-02-28 06:03:00 If you’re still skeptical about Google Apps and software as a service (SaaS), spend a day at Long Island’s Hofstra University. Roughly 13,000 Hofstra students have access to Google Apps Education Edition to collaborate online, according to Robert W. Juckiewicz, Hofstra’s VP of IT. The university’s ongoing experience with Google and SaaS — and Hofstra’s future goals — provide some clear hints about how the corporate software market may evolve to increasingly include Google. Nobody is predicting the death of Microsoft Office, but it’s clear that Google Apps and Microsoft’s desktop productivity suite are on a long-term collision course. Nobody is suggesting that universities running Microsoft Office will pull the plug on that desktop suite anytime soon. After all, Office provides a far more comprehensive feature set than Google Apps. Plus, students don’t have to be connected to a network to access and use Office. Assum...

Free Google Apps Team Edition
2008-02-08 18:21:00 Google is releasing a new edition of its hosted applications suite that end-users can bring into the workplace without the involvement of their IT department. It means that IT managers who fret about employees using unauthorized software at work will have another tool to worry about, especially in industries where information management is heavily regulated, like health care and finance. The new release, called Google Apps Team Edition, is due to be available Thursday for free. It is aimed at employees who are interested in using Google Apps but whose employers haven't signed up for it, said Rajen Sheth, Google Apps senior product manager.Team Edition contains the core communication and collaboration services and applications from other editions, like the word processor, spreadsheet, Start page, Talk instant messaging and calendar, but not Gmail, which requires IT participation to re-route the company's e-mail flow.So far, more than 500,000 mostly small organizations have signed up ...
Use Google Apps Without Pesky IT
2008-02-08 01:02:00 If you work for a company that has an IT department this news may put a little smile on your face. Personally, I would love to try out apps like Opera's Mini web browser, or the new Firefox mobile web browser once it is released but my IT department views these applications as a threat, so they block me from installing them on my Blackberry. While I understand their need to protect their own information as well as their customers, could someone please tell me how downloading a game from RIMS own website is a security threat? Well at least Google feels my pain as they are set to release Google Apps Team Edition that will allow users to download and install Google's popular productivity suite including the word processor, spreadsheet, Talk instant messaging, and calendar. Noticeably absent from the list is Gmail which still requires IT support in order to re-route the companies email. Under the agreement, Google will power some of the Web infrastructure that Clearwire customers will use, while Clearwire will control the look and feel of the interface. Clearwire has some 350,000 users so far, and expects to expand aggressively in 2008 with Mobile WiMAX implementations in dozens of cities. Google has a virtually identical deal in place with Sprint. Google’s deal with Clearwire is a big win for the search giant, but mostly because it sets the stage for much bigger things to come. TheStreet.com Senior Writer Vishesh Kumar explains it all (video).
