Color and some format options were already available of course, but you can now specify borders, you can add divs with styling, create different types of lists in seconds. Since all this is implemented in CSS, you can just specify different classes for different types of content and then encase the specific contents in divs. This means you will format your document once, which will take you 10 minutes, and after that formatting a whole blog of text will only take about 2 sends. However, unlike with word-processing documents, spreadsheets and presentations can only be viewed, not edited, according to a post by marketing manager Andrew Chang on the Google Docs blog Friday. That's still useful, though. Chang gives the example of giving a slide presentation without having to worry about network access. The offline access uses the Google Gears technology the search engine giant introduced in 2007 as an open-source project. Google is trying to take on Microsoft with its online software, but Gartner believes Microsoft poses a greater competitive threat to Google with online ads than Google does to Microsoft with online office suites.

I understand why Google is pitching it as a safety net for a flaky online connection, as opposed to an honest-to-goodness offline application. As we noted yesterday, you cannot yet create a new document when offline. And something we weren't told: when working offline, you can't insert a picture into a file nor review its revision history. Furthermore, offline edit reconciliation isn't quite what I was told it would be. I fired up a shared Docs file, pulled the Ethernet plug on my machine, and started to make changes. Meanwhile, I asked Josh, still online, to edit the same block of text I was working on. When I plugged my machine back into the Net, Josh's changes overwrote mine with no warning. This means that you will be able to use Google Docs without internet access, and when you do manage to go online your stuff will be synchronized automatically. Offline access will probably mean that you will loose some features, but no loss of data, and the ability to edit documents online. I don’t really know what features you can use, since I haven’t got the feature yet, but I’m sure that basic text editing will be seamless. The benefits of Google Gears is great, now you don’t have to worry about getting disconnected or if you’ll be able to work from the train or not. Just go to offline mode, write all you want and when you get wired again docs will sync on its own.
