Google Knol - Another Wikipedia like ServiceKnol has been described as a rival to Wikipedia. It is an online wiki like publishing platform from Google. It will be used to create user-generated articles on various topics. It was announced on December 13, 2007Earlier this week, we started inviting a selected group of people to try a new, free tool that we are calling ?knol?, which stands for a unit of knowledge. Our goal is to encourage people who know a particular subject to write an authoritative article about it. The tool is still in development and this is just the first phase of testing. For now, using it is by invitation only. But we wanted to share with everyone the basic premises and goals behind this project. The key idea behind the knol project is to highlight authors. Books have authors? names right on the cover, news articles have bylines, scientific articles always have authors ? but somehow the web evolved without a strong standard to keep authors names highlighted.

Google has opened access to its private beta invitation-only knowledge sharing service called Knol (Knol originated from Knowlegebase) that will combine parts of Wikipedia, Squidoo, Mahalo to create a new user generated authoritative online knowledgebase of everything. Google's New Service: Google "Knol"
1970-01-01 00:59:00
If Google has its way the likes of Wikipedia and Squidoo are set to face some stiff competition. Yesterday they announced that they have begun building the groundwork for a serious contender. Google Knol (apparently it means a unit of knowledge- who am I to judge?) is intended to provide a resource that will be the first thing that someone who searches for a particular topic- for the first time- will want to read. The concept is that because the web allows information to be disseminated so freely there is no way to maintain the association between an author and their original work. For authors Google Knol would be a step in the right direction, but I'm concerned with how Google would go about actually ‘hiring' or selecting authors for a topic (maybe I've missed something- if I have please comment). It is possible that in picking the author for a Knol Google will by default be able to decide the tone and balance of a Knol. The claim that they will not edit any content is l...
