Google Reader by Lee Lefever
2008-08-27 17:20:00
Lee Lefever is the creator of the Common Craft Blog and all the videos in Plain English. He recently posted one that he created for the Google Reader Team at Google. This one is getting the most out of your Google Reader.  If you don't know why we need a RSS feed reader, you can watch Lee's video on RSS feeds in Plain English on YouTube.  You can also go and read a post by Andy Kaufman on RSS feeds and the link to the video is there. Jon Washburn wrote a post a few weeks ago sharing his statistics from his Google Reader account (which is great for knowing what blogs he is reading). Sarah Washburn also wrote on a post on Getting Your Blog to the top of Google Reader. Everyone needs a feed reader, and my personal preference is Google. The only problem I have is the same one I have on Activerain with all my blog subscriptions. Too many, but I'm a nut about being afraid of missing something. This video on Google Reader is only 1.05 minutes long and I know it will be helpful to you ...

Sharing Information With Google Reader
2008-05-27 00:00:00
Google Reader is a very valuable tool that I am sure many of you are aware of, however, it has offers more than just keeping up with your favorite XML and RSS feeds. It also gives you the ability to share posts from your subscriptions that you find valuable and would be useful to your friends. You can mark posts with a star, giving you the ability to come back to posts that you want to revisit. Along with the star option, you can label feeds with tags so you can organize all of your feeds within specific categories. Other valuable options for you to share information that you find via the feeds that you read is the ability to share the post in a couple of different ways: Email Shared Page Widget Email Sending feeds to people that you think will be able to use is a very efficient way of sharing posts from your feed reader. The Google Reader makes this rather easy to send and incorporates the post along with a message. Shared Page Google Reader also offers a great way of sharing inf...
Bloglines Continues to Lead Google Reader
2008-05-21 22:12:00
Heather Hopkins of Hitwise has a new post for all you Blogliners out there. She's a VP of Research at Hitwise, a leading web analytics firm. She writes, "It (Bloglines) is the most popular web-based feed reader based on share of US visits." Or in other words, Bloglines is beating Google Reader in the U.S. In an interview done by RW/W on August of 2007, I said it was a "2 horse race." It still is. Heather goes onto write about the differences between the user bases. Bloglines users are also more inclined toward Photography websites, while Google Reader users are more inclined to visit Television websites. ...Bloglines users are 24% more likely to continue on to a retail (Shopping & Classifieds) website. It would be interesting to hear from Blogliners on your blogs to see if you really do track more photography websites. Google Reader lets users do micro-blogging
2008-05-19 21:52:00
Ok, Twitter and Google Reader aren?t exactly apples to apples, but the new ?Notes? feature in Google Reader feels a lot like posting status updates in Twitter. When you type a note, it?s automatically shared with all your friends unless you unshare, and it appears almost as a real article in the reading list of all your friends.googlereadernotes.pngTo- use the feature, log into Google Reader and click on ?Notes? in the sidebar under ?Your Stuff?. Type a note, and click ?Post Note?, and you are done. Try not to post too many tests because there is no way to delete them, and your friends could get annoyed. There is a second way to use notes also ? while reading an item, you can attach notes to items that you decide to share ? this is a good way to let people know your two cents.googlereadersharenote.png-I think this feature is awesome ? minus how it?s impossible to delete notes. What do you think? Could this give Twitter some competition? Or is it simply a feature on Google Reader that n...
Load Google Reader in the Firefox sidebar
2008-05-19 18:20:00
Google Reader has recently launched a revamped version of their iPhone interface in an attempt to make iPhone users’ experience in Reader much easier and far more comfortable. But what they probably didn’t think of is that this mobile-friendly version can also be loaded in the Firefox sidebar, just like we learned last week from the guys over at MozillaLinks. If you want to add Google Reader to your Firefox sidebar, simply open the bookmark manager (Bookmarks > Organize bookmarks) and create a new bookmark with the Google Reader for iPhone URL. Make sure the “Load this bookmark in the sidebar” option is enabled and click on the OK button. There! Next time you load this bookmark it’ll open right in the Firefox sidebar, enabling you to always keep en eye on the latest headlines in your feeds. Of course, you can also use this tip with other sites and make them open in the sidebar. This trick works better with websites that have been specifically design...

New Google Reader is iPhonerrific
2008-05-13 19:38:00
Attention, mobile RSS junkies. Google’s released a new iPhone-specific version of its Google Reader feed reader. The new version which, unsurprisingly, is in beta, is supposed to bring many of the features available in desktop browsers: you can star items, share them with others, and mark them as unread, and navigate your subscriptions via folders. They also claim to have tuned it for better speed performance. I’m not a regular Google Reader user, but I had at some pointed imported a bunch of my subscriptions into it, so I fired up the new version to see what the haps was (were?). At the moment, since it’s in beta, you’ll specifically need to point your iPhone to http://www.google.com/reader/i/- in order to check it out. The speed on EDGE wasn’t super fast—something I might chalk that up to my volume of feeds/unread items—but it was certainly usable. If only it synced with NetNewsWire, I could imagine using it as for all my iPhone feed-rea...

Google Reader Has Just Got Socially Sexier
2008-05-12 19:54:00
I think Google Reader has just got a damn sight more sexier and any lingering disloyal thoughts I might have had about going back to My Yahoo are now well and truly gone. The reason for my unwavering loyalty? Notes! Yes you heard me right - notes! There's now no doubt now that Google is gradually building a social network to rival all other social networks but it all seems to be in dribs and drabs and it's a bit confusing how they are going to eventually connect it all up. I mean, let's look at the various strands :
Google Reader going Social??
2008-05-07 17:19:00
It seems that Google is maneuvering to make their Google Reader RSS tool into a more social avenue by adding some features that will let its users share specific content and add notes about why they are sharing it. It is starting to sound very social to me.  The G Reader updates will provide its users with "bookmarklets" that will let them share content from the Web pages from any site. This also will include websites that do not even have a feed.G Reader users will be able to select some text from the web page before you have to click on the bookmarklet allowing the selection to appear as the item's body.  Kinda like the way StumbleUpon works.  Very nice.Use the 'Share with note' button on the item toolbar to create a copy of the item with your own note attached to it, including comments that will explain to others why you are sharing this content.  Looks like Google is migrating a little at a time in the social media area.CheersCovering the latest cutting ed...

Exporting Google Reader
2008-05-06 22:58:00
Every couple of days, Google finds new ways to tangle me up in their web. The latest is this shared item widget I've added. As you may know, I use Google Reader to aggregate all of my various news feeds. Recently, I added an application which takes the items I share in the reader and updates my twitter. This web service is called twitterfeed, and can be set up to use any kind of RSS input. But, I decided I wanted to make the news stories easily accessible from this page. So, that "Shamiq's Shared Items" thingy in the sidebar is my attempt to make an unobtrusive feature available. Every article/post first passes through a filter (my brain) and if deemed worthy for further syndication, finds itself on the sidebar. The topics of the articles widely vary, but all of them are interesting.Have a nice day.
Sharing made easier on Google Reader

There is even more control over what gets shared. Select some text from the page before clicking the "Note in Reader"... ...
