Why I Stop Stumbling and Start Googling
2008-03-18 18:52:00
The Wall Street Journal had once passionately admired StumbleUpon with these words: "Next time you want to wander the Web, forget about Googling it. Stumble it." I'm sorry, Wall Street Journal. I beg to disobey your suggestion. I just can't forget Google. Google is the best thing that ever happens in the Internet. If I should forget googling, I would rather stop using the Internet. StumbleUpon has brought more frustrations than joys on my part. I hope I was not wasting my time at Stumble, but today I finally said: "I quit." Why I quit? When you go to stumbleupon homepage, you don't see an icon that says "submit, stumble a page, add a site, or discover a site." There is no focus in StumbleUpon. The social networking site, it seems, is still trying to find its niche in the world wide web. Trying to be MySpace-like? Trying to be Digg-like? Trying to be del.icio.us-like? Have I found meaningful friends with StumbleUpon? It's difficult to say...

Find Location of Person Who Is Googling Your Name
2008-02-19 07:17:00
Fifty million times a day, someone, somewhere "Googles" a person's name. Now, technology can help you figure out who's Googling you.Elizabeth Yekhtikian admits she's hooked on the visitor tracking service from Ziggs.com, a site similar to Facebook.com that caters to young professionals. At least once a day she gets an email alerting her she's been checked out."I can check on the site and it shows me with little maps where the searches are coming from, and from exactly which town, within which state or part of the country or the world," said Yekhtikian. "That's kind of cool."A similar site, naymz.com, helped Katie May figure out that an ex-boyfriend, with whom she didn't want to maintain contact, had been searching online for her."He works for a university and all those searches were coming from that university," said May. Ziggs CEO Tim DeMello calls the technology "caller ID for the Internet." When someone clicks on the Ziggs profile, the member receives an alert."Every comput...

Have you tried googling yourself?
2007-12-20 11:15:00
I'm just curious since i read this study on cnn, saying that more americans are googling themselves.. meaning they type their names on Google search engine and find out what the results will be.About 60 percent of Internet users said they aren't worried about the extent of information about themselves online, despite increasing concern over how that data can be used.53 percent of adult Internet users admit to looking up information about someone else, celebrities excluded. Often, it's to find someone they've lost touch with. But looking up information about friends, relatives, colleagues and neighbors also was common.Privacy on the internet has been a serious issue lately. People can learn a lot about a certain person just by searching at their friendster, myspace, or facebook accounts. That's why others are very careful on whatever information they are posting on the net, especially nowadays with companies also doing this online checking to know more about certain job applican...

Find Someone Without Googling Their Name
2007-10-26 03:43:00
There is a people search engine that lets people search for people by their name, keywords, or location of the person you are looking for. The website is called spock and is currently in BETA. At the moment this is just a tool to search for a specific person you are looking for and it is suppose to tell you about that person and anything that is suppose to be affiliated with that person.I can kind of see how this can be a very useful tool in the future. It could have a database of everyone in the entire world and you can find a lot about that person. Since this tool is still in BETA, which means its still new so they will be a lot more features added to it in the future. At the moment they just want to have all the basic functionality to have their website up and running.Potential of the ToolLets say for example, that I want to know what a girl in my work place likes and dislikes. Lets also say that spock is perfect, which means it will have information of that girl in their d...

Googling
2007-09-21 09:02:00
If you are a follower of my blog(s), then you'll know I am a fan of looking up how people find my blog through google (see the tale of how I got to number one on google for the term "hairy gymnast" - here). This morning I was looking at my stats, and it seems that after my post yesterday about the annoying "Colonmate" e-mails I received a series of hits regarding colonmate.Just over 50% of my search engine hits yesterday were about "Colonmate". So I went to google, typed in "Colonmate" and there I was 8th on the list (there are only 12 entries on google - possibly 13 after this post). Now this got me thinking. Maybe I should become a Colonmate affiliate - maybe the UK's number one Colonmate distributor. How about "Cloud Anxiety - as bought to you by Colonmate!!"It does have a ring to it.And maybe the product is actually quite good.Look at the list - and you'll see two hits for "buy colonmate locally" and one for "where to buy colonmate" - now these hits were all from the same person...
Googling the Moon?
2007-09-15 22:52:00
Google is sponsoring a $30 million dollar Lunar X prize."The Google Lunar X Prize will allow every schoolchild, teacher and person onthe planet to participate in going back to the Moon in a way that governmentexploration never could," said Bretton Alexander, executive director of spaceprizes for the X Prize Foundation in Washington.Alexander said the competition "harnesses the power and culture of the Internet to allow each of us to watch the development of the teams, send images and videos of ourselves to the lunar surface, and experience being on the Moon with the rovers."Wow, now that puts the Ansari X prize to shame. Now that suborbit has been done, it looks like we are turning our sites to the moon. I love how Alexander says that we are harnessing the power of the Internet; finally, we're using it for something other than dirty movies and World of Warcraft!Looks like we're finally starting to take getting out of the atmosphere seriously. It's about time.
Googling for Gold!
2007-08-19 19:26:00
Where was you money on the morning of Aug 19, 2004?In case you don't recognize the date, that's the day three years ago when Google (GOOG) became a public company after selling 22.5 million shares of stock at the now laughable price of $85.So much has change since then, Google then the relatively new search company was actually 3 years old back then and had about 35% of the search market and was generating nearly a billion dollars a year from delivering ads and related Web links alongside search results. Many people thought that Google maybe a good investment, they've never imagined the 478% return on the IPO price, now Google trades around 500$ a share. And while Google had introduced a handful of tools, including a blogging tool, that suggested it had ambitions well beyond bread-and-butter search, few investors could have predicted how powerful, expansive, and successful the company would become. In the past three years, Google has grown from a simple search engine worth around ...

Well if you want to try out a method that is not being monitored (Currently!) Check out this website http://www.g2p.org/. They offer up a search engine that finds shared files or files otherwise available for you to grab. What does G2P do?-G2P (Google to Person) uses some crafty Google searches to help locate open directories or otherwise shared files. These searches are nothing secret (In fact, take a look at the results, so you can see how it is done. However, it is much easier to remember g2p.org than these complex searches. Really I put this site together to make it easier on me, and then shared it with you.Why use G2P instead of P2P or BT? -P2P/BT is being monitored -- Using Google we can download a lot more safely. We are simply just following a link -- curious how it leads directly to the file we are looking for. =)and a little ...
The Mind “Googling†Problem of Mumbai Airport …
2007-08-07 21:09:00
Why I used the word “Googling†here because as Google find out search results, similarly the problems at Mumbai Airport has also some solutions may be correct or not, only time will tell. The forecast says it all that passenger traffic at Mumbai airport will increase to 50mn by 2012, so the need for a bigger airport has arisen. But, the current airport cannot be increase to that extent, so as to handle such a huge increase in passenger traffic. The solution lies in the form of airstrip @ Thane district (35km approx. from Mumbai). The plan is to transfer the smaller aircrafts from Mumbai to Thane airstrip and the larger aircrafts will be handled at Mumbai airport. The Mumbai airport has 88 night parking bays for planes, of which 24 are used by smaller aircraft. Small aircraft clogs traffic and the time they take in terms of navigation and runway use also reduces the speed. So if they (small aircrafts) are transferred to some other place then the space vacant can be used for bigge...
Google Phone! Googling Phone!
2007-08-06 18:44:00
Wall Street Journal Magazine is reporting that Google is showing a prototype phone to vendors. The phone could be out within a year! Wow! Wonder how will it looks like?!Google Inc. has developed a prototype cell phone that could reach markets within a year, and plans to offer consumers free subscriptions by bundling advertisements with its search engine, e-mail and Web browser software applications, according to a story published Thursday in The Wall Street Journal.A search from the internet.... Found this new below :Google has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in its mobile-phone project and is courting US and European mobile operators, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday. Google had engaged Taiwan's HTC to design a Linux software-based phone for launch in the first quarter of 2008. T-Mobile would probably be Google's US partner, with France Telecom's Orange selling the phones in other markets. Google had also approached the two big...
Shameless Panty Stories for Your Googling Pleasure
2007-07-27 17:06:00
I while ago, I posted a little something about how I was going to do some SEO by utilizing some of the more popular pornographic search terms that end up landing people at this site. Because, even though it's mostly the moms who leave comments, more than 50% of my hits come from folks who have misgoogled their porn. I was just joking around, didn't have much to say that day, and thought I would have a giggle at some of those crazy search terms. But you know what? That post continues to be the MOST VIEWED post on this site. Tired Of Googling? Use Mahalo
2007-06-07 06:51:00
I found about this fantastic search engine called Mahalo ,I was impressed after doing a single search, something you should try. This is a human powered search engine, meaning every search result is carefully reviewed by humans to select the best search results. It could be useful since its guaranteed to give the best results. But there is a downside as well ,because It may have difficulties accessing most newly updated web pages. But its a search engine with true human touch.I would like to add something about Google ,Google has introduced a new tool to its collection. Its called Google Gears. It is an open source browser extension that lets developers create web applications that can run off line.Recently Google has acquired a company called Panoramio a web service which you could use to place your photos on a world map,now Google is using this technology in combination with Google earth, fantastic.Soon we would be needing another search to find services offered by Google itself.Some...

My brain is Googling
2007-06-03 14:37:00
I just need to lament something here. Back in 1999 I was sitting at the computer in my little house in Minneapolis and I mentioned in passing, to my husband that there was a website I really thought was great. I could find almost anything on the web with it. (Of course the web was like, way small back then too but nevermind). I said; "Honey, it's a site called Google and it would be a
Blending, learning, googling
2007-05-28 09:49:00
Text has dominated learning for 500 years, but no longer… Here’s a post I meant to link to last week but never got round to. Jeff Jarvis notes how Google plan to include video, photos, and news into their search results. He says: This promotes other media to the exalted rank of text… You should be using whatever media best communicates information in the form the user wants. I completely agree. Although he’s talking about news, I would argue the same applies to here at ChinesePod and SpanishSense. It’s the end of the Gutenberg era. As is happening with news, no longer does text dominate the learning landscape. Now, audio and other forms of multi-media are all on an equal footing. There now exists a whole new variety of tools and channels with which to learn and communicate. Each one of them can add depth to the input, add more ‘dimensions’ to the learning. Crucially, it’s up to the user to decide which forms suit him best, to con...
No more googling for your college thesis
2007-05-23 22:48:00
Apparently, Google is quite the valuable research tool for college students. The problem of students buying prewritten theses on the Internet that they then submit under their name in their classes is so prevalent that Google is banning ads on its search site for such paper-writing services. The BBC reports that Google is blocking search ads for essay-writing services because higher-education institutions have complained that plagiarism is "threatening the integrity of university degrees."Google representatives did not immediately respond to e-mails seeking comment. Essay-writing services now join the list of other banned Google ad topics, including drugs, weapons, prostitution, tobacco, fake documents and miracle cures," the BBC said.http://news.com.com/8301-1-0784_3-9722220-7.html?part=rss&-subj=news&tag=2547-1_3-0-20-

Googling Your Date !
2007-04-10 14:54:00
In the Internet age the ability to check people out before they ever meet up has forever changed the rules. For better or worse, "Googling" your date has become standard practice. The results can be enlightening, surprising and sometimes, a little disturbing. With a little creativity and Internet savvy, a person can find anything from blog postings to news stories that might include personal details. It helps to know some basic details upfront, such as an e-mail address that could help turn up an online nickname; some go as far as paying for an online background check. >>

Googling Job Candidates and Consultants
2006-11-23 18:51:00
Googling prospective job candidates has become standard practice among at least the more technologically savvy recruiters.  According to CareerBuilder, twenty-six percent of hiring managers said they have used Internet search engines to research potential employees, and 12 percent said they have used social networking sites.  According to a 2005 survey of 102 executive recruiters by ExecuNet, an executive job-search and networking organization, 75% of recruiters use search engines to uncover information about candidates, and 26% of recruiters have eliminated candidates because of information found online. I too have Googled prospective job candidates and potential human resources consultants for several years now, and have found it to be helpful.  LinkedIn and Zoominfo are also useful sites for finding more about individuals pre- and post-job interview.  Some job candidates may have a presence at one of the social networking sites such as MySpace, Faceback, or F...

Capitalism With a Heart By John Tierney The New York TimesCompassionate conservatism has been an expensive bust in Washington. Googling MySpace

This is good news for MySpacers, since the built-in search at MySpace is not so great, to put it mildly. And everyone thought Murdoch was going to ruin MySpace. Ha!
NOODP Tagging Makes For 'Truer' Googling
1970-01-01 00:59:00
The "snippet" that Google displays below a found page title is taken from DMOZ's Open Directory Project (ODP) or the META DESCRIPTION tag on the page, or from the page contents itself: If your web site is listed in the ODP then Google (and MSN) will regularly use the ODP's description text to describe your web site in their search results. This can be problematic as ODP descriptions are often woefully out of date, not reflecting your current (read: preferred) messaging. It used to be the case that you were forced to suffer this anachronistic data being returned, and take it on the chin... ...that was until May of this year (2007). Google did the decent thing and introduced a Google-specific META robots tag value. The NOODP (No Open Directory Project) robots tag prevents Google from using DMOZ's description. There is a comprehensive practical instruction from Google on how to implement it here, but as a brief overview here are the basics: To prevent all s...
