Minnetonka Gopher Bassmaster Club Tournaments
2009-09-04 03:19:00
This past weekend we had our last two regular season club tournaments on Lake Minnetonka, we fished the West side on Saturday and the East on Sunday as two separate events.  There were quite a few things on the line this weekend.  I was in the final four for our Match Championship, I was leading the Angler of Year by a tiny margin and in position to be our State Team Captain and guaranteed boater next September at the MNBFN TOC on Lake Minnetonka. On day 1, I had practiced one day the previous weekend and tried to find some deeper fish on the west side with my partner Henry.  We caught some fish, but nothing consistent, big or schooled.  With the mostly unproductive practice and my limited knowledge of that side of the lake, I decided to stick to my strength and fish shallow with a jig for the majority of the day.  I caught about 15 keepers, one on a black Secret Weapon Lure Buzzbait and the rest all came on various 3/8oz and 1/2oz Tru-Tungsten jigs flip...
Knife Lake - Gopher Bassmasters Tournament - July 12, 2009
2009-07-17 21:21:00
I was able to get up to Knife Lake on Friday night for about 3 hours to scout the lake for my tournament that was on Sunday, prior to that I had never been on the lake.  I did catch a few fish, but nothing bigger then about 2lbs, learned my way around the lake anyways.  Because of some last minute adjustments, I ended up fishing alone in this tournament and there for was last boat to take off.  So I decided to just start by the landing.  After working the shallows with buzzbaits, frogs, jigs and a chatterbait, I decided to toss my Carolina Rig out from one of the small points, it did not take long to put a nice solid keeper in the boat on a ring fry.  I ended up catching one more fish on the C-Rig and another on a Chompers Twin Tail Grub  on a TackleSmith Tungsten Bronzeback Football head jig.  Not too long after that, I picked up two smaller keepers on a chart/white Fishing Magician VooDoo.  Fished a few docks along there and got nothing on t...
Rush Lakes - Gopher Bassmasters Tournament - July 11, 2009
2009-07-17 21:21:00
Saturday morning came very early this weekend, as several Gopher members stayed up in Hinckley the night before and participated in the town festival on Friday night.  I actually was retying most of my rods as my partner Rick was parking the truck and others launched.  We were boat #2 and boat #1 actually went to the same area on East Rush that we did.  We set down about 75 yards apart and worked a weedline towards each other.  I made sure I had my buoy on my deck, so if we ran into the school that I hoped was there, we would be able to stay on them.  (More on Buoys here)  Sure enough a few pitches with my 3/8oz Tru-Tungsten jig and I had a nice fish hooked and in the boat, as I fought it, I kicked the buoy in with my foot and it was game on.  I was able to boat 6 fish on my jig, lost 3, and my partner got 2 and lost 1.  After that the fish stopped biting, we tried a few other baits, but then left.On the next spot, I cracked a nice fish o...
I Can't Gopher That (No Can Do)
2009-06-01 22:58:00
About six years ago, my wife and I purchased ten acres of farmland just outside of Ripon, California. ?Eight acres of the property are still orchard, while the front two acres serve as home to my wife and me, our two children, my father-in-law, and a varying number of gophers. If you're one of those people who can't stand the thought of any living creature -- no matter how ugly and annoying -- being harmed, I'd suggest you stop reading here, because the fact is that gophers are evil creatures that deserve to die a painful, horrifying death. ?I feel nothing but joy when I club a gopher over the head with a shovel and then toss his lifeless carcass into the orchard as a warning to the other gophers. ?I've even been known, while in the throes of a gopher-killing frenzy, to cackle evilly and make dire but nonsensical pronouncements such as, "Oh, I'm AFRAID the deflector shield will be QUITE operational when your friends arrive...."Here's a second disclaimer, before I go any further...
Gopher Bassmasters 2009 Schedule
2009-01-20 00:12:00
The 2009 Gopher Bassmasters Schedule has recently been set, I plan to fish all the events this year on top of my Bassmaster Weekend Series tournaments, the BFN Northern Divisional, MNBFN TOC and maybe a BFL or 2.  Looks like a fun schedule, few bodies I have never fished and a couple that I am pretty familiar with.  If you are thinking about joining a bass club, Gopher Bassmasters is taking new members for this year yet, check out their website. Gopher Bassmasters Fall Classic - Lake Waconia - September 21, 2008
2008-09-27 00:38:00
Saturday I was out on Minnetonka again, trying to get dialed in for the Weekend Series tourney this weekend.  I cannot say that I found anything that great, guess I have a couple 3-4 new areas that have some 3lbs plus potential, and I will need plenty of those for this 2 day tournament format.  My best fish came on 3/8oz Tru-Tungsten Jigs and soft plastics.Sunday was our 4th annual Gopher Fall Classic for the club.  This is our one tournament that is more fun, as it does not count towards standing and its a team format.  I was on the winning team the prior 3 years, so I had high expectations for Frank & I.  Another unique thing, is that we do not find out the tournament site until 2 days before the tournament and there is no practice allowed.Frank has had some prior experience on this lake, and I have been on it a couple times, but never really this time of year.  We started in the reeds, Frank caught a small keeper on a Power Slug and lost one on a...
Lake O'dowd Gopher Bassmasters Jr. Tournament - June 15, 2008
2008-06-24 09:49:00
We had our first Jr Gopher Bassmaster Club event on O'dowd in Shakopee this past Sunday.  I was available to be a boat captain, and I always like to fish these when I can.  This tournament, we had one adult club member acting as captain and a jr. angler to form teams.  It was a shared 5 bass limit, but the catch was, that the adult angler could only weigh a maximum of 2 bass.  I drew Cody Sieben who is a very accomplished youth bass angler, he has 2 state titles to his credit along with many other wins and high finishes.I had been on the lake once before earlier this spring, so we started near one of the island working topwater, I started with a Vixen and Cody a buzz frog.  Nothing happening, we try some adjacent vegetation and pads, one little dink on a ring fry.  We then moved to a small section of pads and I catch a solid 2lb fish on a floating frog and Cody gets a good one keeper on a green pumpkin jig.  We continue working shallow vegeta...
Gopher Balls
2008-06-07 18:19:00
On Thursday I took a look at Johan Santana in order to see if there were any commonalities amongst his home runs surrendered, via Pitch F/X, when compared to other results. The results showed that, on his home run balls, not only were the pitches right down the middle of the plate but they came ...
Death of the Gopher
2008-05-04 00:19:00
Gopher are your friendGopher is a distributed document search and retrieval network protocol designed for the Internet. Its goal is to function as an improved form of Anonymous FTP, enhanced with hyper linking features similar to that of the World Wide Web. I have use this many times. The Gopher protocol offers some features not natively supported by the Web and imposes a much stronger hierarchy on information stored on it. Its text menu interface is well-suited to computing environments that rely heavily on remote computer terminals, common in universities. With the vast popularity of the World Wide Web, Gopher is all but disused at present, with remaining sites being run by individual enthusiasts. It is a shame at the death of the Gopher.Has anyone else used the Gopher.Types of Internet serversThis is going to be series of post on the types of internet servers. My Sweet Widdle Gopher
2008-04-21 21:54:00
(This photo was found here.)During my breaks at work, I often slip outside by myself. Near a particular nook where I stand to take shelter from the wind, there is a gopher hole. The gopher who pokes his head out of it is never too thrilled with my presence, and he whistles at me in this way that puffs out his cheeks to tell me to get off his fecking property already while only blinking one eye at a time. I click my tongue at him in return, which always makes him cock his head a bit, as though he could decipher what I might be trying to say. I like him.I am also fully aware that this little gopher is probably fifty different gophers that have burrowed under that section of land, but I am an inveterate anthropomorphizer. I prefer to think of all fifty gophers that might pop their heads up out of that hole as this one, whom I have decided is male. This way, I feel less like of an idiot when I ask him how his day is going, and I can pretend that we are getting used to each other. ...

Alex Gopher - Motorcycle
2008-04-15 21:23:00
‘Motorcycle’ is the first Kitsune release for Alex Gopher. Tracks on Kitsune and Ed Banger seem to be always defined by a single synth line that gets pounded, then breaks down, and then comes in even stronger. This is exactly the formula here, as Alex starts with a simple, catchy synth line and proceeds to ...
Ted Roof heads Gopher defense
2008-03-04 20:32:00
Former Duke head football coach Ted Roof has been hired as the new defensive coordinator at Minnesota. The press release from the school indicates that the 44-year-old Roof is a “veteran defensive mastermind” which may stir up some interesting comments from Duke fans. Roof replaces Everett Withers who has taken the defensive coordinator’s position with North Carolina. ...

Gopher Bassmasters Fall Classic - Coon Lake - September 23, 2007
2007-09-29 00:00:00
Well its that time of year again, its late September/Early October, time for the 3rd Annual Gopher Bassmasters Fall Classic.  This tournament is different then the usual club tournament, for a few reasons:Its our only team tournament, the lake is drawn last minute, so no prefishing.  We also try to pick lakes with big fish potential.  The first two years, we fished Minnetonka & Medicine lake, neither one produced giant bags like we had hoped when we started the Fall Classic idea.  Coon Lake was the lake selected from the proverbial hat for 2007.  On a positive note, the Fall Classic has been good to me, as my team has won the first two and I had ideas in my winning the 3rd as Coon Lake is one of my favorites lakes in MN.Its been a few years since I have fished Coon Lake, but I have had my share of success there.  I figured we could run and gun until we got on a pattern and I knew the lake well enough to keep it going from there.  I dr...
Gopher Bassmasters Jr. Tournament - Bald Eagle Lake - August 25, 2007
2007-08-31 00:00:00
I served as a boat captain in one of our Jr. Bass Club tournaments this past Saturday.  I believe there was a total of 4 boats and 7 youth anglers.  I had only a single youth member, Zach Martens.  I had not been on the lake in about 10 years, and Zach had never been on the lake.  We decided to start in the slop right next to the access.  I let Zach use on of my baitcasters that was spooled up with a braid and had a black Optimum Furbit floating frog on tied on.  He had a few bites there and even caught a small keeper on it.   We tried the cattails for a bit, but nothing happening.  Zach then said he wanted to try some docks.  I brought him to some docks that I had caught fish way back when.  He started throwing a Watermelon Red Flake Yum Dinger he soon lost one and caught another small keeper.  He was then out of dingers, so I dug threw my plastics and let him choose from stick baits that I had in the boat. ...
A Gopher Museum?

Torrington, Alberta with a population of less than 200 is probably not on most peoples list of neat places to visit. Gophers Coaching Staff Looking Good
2007-04-07 04:06:00
Yahoo sports seems to be praising the new Gophers coaching staff.Yahoo - "...The spring game will also give fans a first look at Brewsters' staff, including defensive coordinator Everett Withers and offensive coordinator Mike Dunbar. Withers will get his first taste of coordinating Saturday after spending the past five years as a defensive backs coach for the Tennessee Titans. Dunbar joined the Gophers after serving as California's offensive coordinator last season when the Golden Bears averaged 32.8 points per game -- ranking Cal 11th in the country."We get the man who led Pac Man at Tennessee and the man who led Marshawn Lynch the Pac10 Offensive Player of the Year at Cal.For the first time in my life I'm actually excited to see how good this Gopher team will be in 3 years once this coaching staff gets some of their recruits in place.
Go Gophers...
2007-03-18 04:12:00
A big day for the Golden Gophers of Minnesota... No, not the March Madness basketball tourney, where the Gophers are significantly absent, but in some of the "non-glory" sports, where they continue to dominate. Congrats first to the Gopher Wresting team which won it's 2nd consecutive national title. Heavyweight Conrad Cole won his 50 somethingth match in a row and won his second NCAA championship with a fall in the first round. He's considered the greatest of the Gopher Heavyweights, which includes among others... Brock Lesnar of the professional wrestling fame. Gontrats secondly for the Golden Gopher Hockey team that won the WCHA Final Five. (of course Hockey of officially a glory sport here, but not necessarily for the rest of the country). If you are a highlight ESPN watcher you will likely see the final goal as number 17 dives for a puck and take a backhanded swipe only to have it nudge past the goaltender for the winning goal in overtime. The ironic thing is that this parti...
Gophers just miss at-large bid for NCAA Tournament
2007-03-12 01:44:00
With an RPI of 190, the University of Minnesota men's basketball team narrowly missed out on making the field of 64 today.  Their outstanding record of 9-22 put them as the 9th seed in this weeks Big Ten conference tournament.  After their first round loss versus Michigan, Athletic Director Joel Maturi needs to do something to change the direction of a once proud, err, I mean middle of the pack program.  The first task on his list should be directed towards finding a new coach.  Whether he decides to stick with current coach Molenari or go in a different direction a decision needs to be made.  Currently the players have said that their choice to be head coach next season is Molenari.  This simply cannot happen in my opinion.  The Gophers need to build buzz around the program.  The easiest way to do that would be to get Flip Saunders or Bobby Knight to leave their respective teams to roam the sidelines at Williams Arena.  This will b...
Gophers idle this weekend
2007-02-13 10:22:01
The U of M men's hockey team is off this weekend, but not to worry folks, they will be back in action Feb. 16-17 when they take on Colorado College in Colorado Springs. The Gophers are currently in first place in the WCHA standings with a 15- 4- 3 record (23- 5- 3 overall) and a total of 33 points. They have a comfortable lead ahead of St. Cloud State (11- 5- 4, 17- 5- 4) and Denver (12- 8- 2, 20-10- 2) who are tied for second with 26 points each and CC (12- 7- 1, 16-10- 2) whose has 25 points. After this weekend there will only be three weeks of regular season left, so many teams will be fighting for those final spots to make it into the WCHA Final Five and maybe onto the Frozen Four. The Gophers will try and hold off SCSU and Denver to capture another conference championship and MacNaughton Cup for the second consecutive year. The three remaining weeks of the season might pose a challenge for the Gophers. CC always plays tough at home, SCSU will be a chall...

Gopher Bassmasters Fall Classic - Medicine Lake - September
2006-10-03 04:15:03
We decided to have the take-off at 8am, as the fall can often be more of a afternoon bite.  It was a small tournament with 5 boats fishing as two man teams.  John and I made a quick pass through the reeds while I scraped the corrosion of my battery terminals.  No bites in the reeds and I finally got the main motor started. We headed to a hump in the south end of the lake, we fished around looking for good weeds, found some, fished with jigs, soft plastics and spinnerbaits, no bites.  We then headed over to some docks, on about my 5 pitch to a small patch of milfoil, I set the hook on a 2lb bass, got it up to the surface and it came unbuttoned.  Tough loss, but it was early.  I figured if I kept fishing my jig, we would get a solid limit by the end of the day.  John then missed a bite right after that, so I figured we were on a good pattern.  About 15 docks later I got a small 12.25" fish on a 3/8oz Sunfish Tru-Tungsten Jig.We hopped around dock...
Gopher Bassmasters Fall Classic Preview
2006-09-30 03:57:01
Tomorrow is the last event of our club season.  The standings are final for the year, but we have this as a fun tournament to end the year.  It differs from the rest of our tournaments as it is our only team event and does not count for AOY standings or towards our state team qualification. We are fishing Medicine Lake tomorrow.  This tournament is also unique in the fact that we just found out yesterday this was the lake we were going to be fishing and it is a no practice tournament.  Tomorrow looks like we will have sun and a warmer day, so I look forward to a tournament with quite a few fish caught and a few big ones.   My game plan is to hit one or two deep spots and maybe some pads early then probably run docks and pads the rest of the day.  My partner and I will fish as a team, we will throw different baits until we dial into what they want and then focus in on them and try to come up with a nice 6 fish sack.Check back Monday for results.....R...
