The amazing Endangered Gorilla.. Please Help!
2008-03-12 00:28:00 The largest of the great apes, the gorilla is among our most endangered species. Gorillas are shy and peaceful. The only natural enemy of gorillas has always been human beings. Caught in the act! Gorillas mate face to face
2008-02-14 01:11:00 Gorillas have been caught on camera for the first time performing face-to-face intercourse. Humans and bonobos were the only primates thought to mate in this manner. And while researchers have observed wild gorillas engaged in such an act, it had never been photographed. How about a little privacy! GEEZ! Off topic, I know. Travis travis@rightwinglunatic.com
Gorillas use man-like weaponry to defend themselves when provoked
2008-02-01 12:36:00 Cross River gorillas in Cameroon have been spotted hurling clumps of grass or tree branches at human intruders, a man-like behaviour which has never earlier been observed in the animal. According to National Geographic News, researchers documented three cases in which the gorillas on Cameroon's Kagwene Mountain used the vegetation as “weapons” against human intruders, who had provoked them. "At first we didn't think too much of it, but then we realized that this is quite remarkable," said Jacqueline Sunderland Groves, who established the Wildlife Conservation Society research team working in the area. "I don't think gorillas have been documented using this kind of weaponry before in the wild," she added. In one of the three documented instances, the researchers observed a local hunter stumbling upon a group of gorillas. When the hunter tried to scare off the gorillas by banging his machete on the ground, the group staye...

Gorillas of Rwanda
2007-12-02 18:13:00 Many thanks to all of my readers for bearing with a length delay in new posts since I left for Africa. It's been a few weeks of merciless, ass jarring travel through that ultimately led to the portion of my current travels that had most captured my imagination - Rwanda. After camping overnight in the northwestern town of Ruhengheri, my first full day in the country was the gorilla trek in the Parc du Volcans - first brought to the world's attention by Dian Fossey and her groundbreaking study of the mountain gorilla.A 6am wake up call had us at the trail head at the mediocre hour of 9am, a level of efficiency I affectionately refer to as 'African time'. When we did get rolling it was bliss stretching the legs as we hiked through the the village hugging the volcanic slopes towards the protected parkland. We moved towards the jungle under the escort of a guide plus two armed members of the Rwandan military. The latter being an overcautious assurance of safety due to the ongoing c...
Gorillas Use Tools to Fight Human Invaders
2007-11-28 19:54:00 Suggests earlier use of tools in human evolution.Don't mess with other primates, human.Wild gorillas have been seen using "weapons" for the first time, giving a new insight into how early man learned to use sticks and stones for fighting and hunting millions of years ago. Researchers observed gorillas in the Cross River area of Cameroon throwing sticks, clumps of earth and stones at human "invaders". It is the first time that the largest of the great apes has been seen to use tools in an aggressive way.Experts believe that our ancestors may have learned to use sticks and stones in a similar way to frighten away predators. The scientists noticed the unusual behaviour during a three-year study. They believe the animals might have learned to throw objects from humans who were seen throwing stones at the gorillas.Jacqueline Sunderland Groves, from the University of Sussex in Brighton, a member of the Wildlife Conservation Society team, said:"The area is largely isolated from other g...
Speaking of Gorillas and Boobies
2007-11-20 13:10:00 If you hadn't seen it earlier this year, you'll want to watch the Cadbury Gorilla commercial before watching this video. Being an amateur OCD enthusiast, I really appreciate all of the attention to detail - right down to the blinking. The model is British pop singer, rapper, songwriter and model, Jentina and yes, it's a real Wonderbra commercial (or at least a real Wonderbra viral ad). I personally think that she's way too skinny and the sight of her ribs kinda grosses me out but then the camera pans up to her boobs I hear Phil Collins and every thing's ok. Those prone to stalking at the drop of a hat should proceed to watch Jentina's video for her hit song "Bad Ass Strippa" - although I really wouldn't recommend it.

Zoo Visitors Go Ape Over Gorillas
2007-10-15 15:01:00 A new gorilla compound has led to record visitor numbers at one of the UK’s top zoos. Big names among the visitors Thanks to the gorillas and their new rainforest exhibit, London Zoo is preparing to welcome its one millionth visitor of the year. This is the first time the zoo - which was founded in 1826 - has reached the one million mark in eight years. Now the management is hoping to attract more visitors than in any year since 1991, when 1.1 million came through the turnstiles. Last year, the attendance figure was 883,000. The lucky one millionth visitor - who is expected in a few days’ time - will be given a special tour behind the scenes and a free lunch. Zoo marketing manager James Bailey said: “Our rising visitor numbers are proof that we are doing things right. “We are very excited about welcoming the millionth visitor this year. “It’s a real milestone for us and someone is certainly going to have an extra special day out.” source...

Mountain Gorillas Left Unprotected
2007-10-13 01:03:00 Park guards flee Virunga National Park amidst hostilityCongelese government troops captured by rebel soldiersImage: Riccardo Gangale/APEarlier I linked to the news that rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo had taken over the gorilla's protected zone in the east of the country. Today it?s being reported that park guards were forced to leave the area as the result of heavy fighting between the factions. As National Geographic reported:Today the fighting between rebels and the Congolese army heated up near Bukima, the park's main gorilla monitoring station.Rangers could also hear the exchange of heavy gunfire near park headquarters at Rumangabo, according to Norbert Mushenzi, director of Virunga's gorilla sector for the Congolese Institute for the Conservation of Nature (ICCN)."Rangers and local inhabitants are fleeing from all around the park, and the mountain gorillas are totally unprotected," Mushenzi said. With less than 700 mountain gorillas alive in the wild (half of whic...

Two More Gorillas Found Dead
2007-08-20 20:54:00 Good news of baby Ndeze's success marred by tragedyEarlier this week I linked to a story showing that the baby of one of the four murdered gorillas (one of whom was also pregnant) is currently in stable condition. Yesterday conservationists in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo discovered the remains of two more adult gorillas with one of their infants almost assuredly lost as well. This brings the death toll to nine this year. As I highlighted before, with only 700 mountain gorillas alive in the wild the loss of these individuals now represents the equivalent of 85 million people, or the entire population of Germany.According to Reuters:"Effectively, this means that not only are there six that are now dead, but there will now be a group of 12 gorillas that may not carry on into the next generation, said Gerard Collin, a consultant with the UNESCO team.So far this year, nine mountain gorillas have been killed in North Kivu. Two adult males, known as silverbacks because of their...

Gorillas Eat Vegetables Shouldn't You?
2007-08-07 11:30:00 Gorilla's eat mostly vegetables and fruit and are one of the most powerful animals on the planet. The fact that they're vegetarian and of such immense size and strenght blows me away. There is still a lot of debate about whether humans should model Gorilla's and eat a plant based diet. The fact is that gorillas have a completely different digestive system than we do and that they can tolerate much more fruit because of their superior intestinal flora. However, what we can learn from them is that they are a massive animal and they eat pretty much ONLY vegetables and fruit. There's power in that. I've said for a long time on this blog and in my writing the importance of having vegetables with each meal. Most recently a post about eating a salad with breakfast. Vegetables provide nutrients (albeit very few these days due to poor farming practices), much needed fiber and bulk and help us to eat smaller meals with less calories but yet feel full. This leads to a healthier col...

2007-07-27 16:32:00 Conservationists were shocked to find four gorillas found shot dead this week at a national park in the Democratic Republic of Congo, marking seven gorilla murders so far this year. The bodies were found in Virunga National Park with no suspects or motives for killing the animals. This is especially alarming since the number of ...
The baby gorillas who think their keeper is the best mum in the world
2007-06-26 20:44:00 For these two baby gorillas, clinging on to mum is the most natural thing in the world - even if she is making a cup of tea, rather than foraging in a tropical forest. Six-month-old girl Kouki and ten-month-old boy Oudiki were abandoned by their separate mothers soon after they were born. Since then, they have been hand-reared by zookeepers Donna Honey and Matt Stagg at Howletts Wild Animal Park in Kent. The western lowland gorillas are now doing so well that they are being primed for a return to the wild in their native Africa. Miss Honey, 25, said that the secret of mothering her two unlikely charges was to behave as much like a mother gorilla as possible. "We don't tend to carry them," she said. "We encourage them to grip on to us like they would their mum. We also make gorilla noises to make them feel at home."

HIV, hominids, humans, chimps, gorillas and evolution [Gene Expression]
2007-06-25 03:04:00 By now you’ve probably heard/read about the relationship of HIV resistance and hominoid evolutionary genetics. The original paper in Science that started it off is titled Restriction of an Extinct Retrovirus by the Human TRIM5α Antiviral Protein; quite a mouthful. Lucky for us Carl Zimmer has an excellent exposition as well as a background primer, while John Hawks offers further thoughts looking at the various hypotheses through the lens of someone with a deep grasp of paleoanthropology. Sex with Gorillas? Pubic Crabs Originated in Apes
2007-03-11 00:00:00 A DNA analysis of pubic lice, aka “crabs” revealed that the parasites were transferred from gorillas to early humans about 3.3 million years ago. This points to a close contact between our ancestors and gorillas, but it is far more likely that early humans got the lice from sleeping in abandoned gorilla nests ...

What is GorillaSushi?
2007-01-30 02:27:02 Reader Phyllis L. Snider asks "What Is GorillaSushi?" Excellent question, Phyllis. I've been waiting for someone to ask that question for almost a year now. Why has no one asked this basic question? Have you made your own assumptions? What are they? Back in '95 I had a serious internet addiction. There would be times when I would cruise back to work around 3am on a Friday night just to do a little more chatting. Luckily I didn't have an internet connection at home. I rearranged my job description to the point where my duties included "waiting for something to break" and "chatting online." That lasted about a year and then I severed my connection almost completely. Years later I was back online but less of an interactive relationship. The internet was now a place to consume information and a source of reference. About a year ago, the wife and I decided that writing blogs might be fun. I was faced with the task of cre...
