[the naked gospel] closing thoughts
2009-09-15 18:00:00
Introduction Thank you for the opportunity to write a final statement after the week of reflections on my book, The Naked Gospel.  I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the reviews and interacting with the readers as well. It?s been a privilege to be a part of it all! I think it?s probably best for me to simply wrap ...
[the naked gospel] part 7: ego assult
2009-09-14 14:00:00
by Don F Perkins The concept of sin is so misunderstood both inside and outside of the church today. Could it be because it is of such great importance for us to understand, the deceiver has made it a priority to cloud our thinking about it since the beginning? Genesis 3:1b “Did God really say, ‘You ...
[the naked gospel] part 6: we don?t marry dead people
2009-09-13 14:00:00
by Andi Shaw I took on this opportunity because I have always been the type of person who observes the world and turns a critical eye on everything. I saw problems and was never content to just accept them. I grew up in the church with my parents. My dad has been a church worship pastor ...
[the naked gospel] part 5: cheating on Jesus
2009-09-12 14:00:00
by Ken Elsner As followers of Jesus Christ, we have, for centuries struggled living between two lives, or, more specifically, to ?Testaments.? Having been given the incredible gift of the Bible, (God?s love letter to His people) we live in a tension of not wanting to ignore the Old Testament while living in the heart of ...

by Bryant Neal As I begin this contribution to the blog project for the ?Naked Gospel?, the first thing I have to say is WOW!! Reading through this book was like standing outside in the direct line of a fire-hose gushing out ice cold water, but in an awesomely refreshing way. I felt like King David ...
[the naked gospel] part 3: crossing the line
2009-09-10 14:00:00
by Christopher Neufeld It has been a long time since I have read a book that has been as thought-provoking as The Naked Gospel. I appreciate being able to sit down and read something that challenges my beliefs, yet isn’t insulting. I like to think that I’m a pretty liberal Christian, but I find that this ...

by Tim Borntreger Oh wow?where to begin!  There is no way a short post can do any bit of justice to what I just read! It was this past Monday evening I picked up Andrew Farley?s book entitled The Naked Gospel.  Not sure why I picked it up but as I read the ?Fair Warning? section ...

Second, I’d like to make it clear that I did receive a free copy of this book for participating. The book is The Naked Gospel by Andrew Farley. This is a book about taking the ...
[the naked gospel] introduction
2009-09-07 14:00:00
Sometimes we need to get our world rocked. As I’ve read through Andrew Farley’s The Naked Gospel, that is exactly what has been happening to me. I’ve often found myself reading through the pages of this book asking myself whether or not I agree with what Farley is trying to tell me. In fact, Farley anticipates ...

JESUS + NOTHING This is exactly what the new book by Andrew Farley can be summarized as. The title alone is one that catches your eye… The Naked Gospel: The truth you may never hear in church. Wow! That is a pretty bold statement to make right on the cover, and that is exactly what Farley ...

Part 2: Crossan on the Meaning of Christ?s Sacrifice
2009-08-06 18:16:00
The following is excerpted from John Domonic Crossan?s book, ?God and Empire?: “THE MEANING OF SACRIFICE” Apart from narrativity, let alone historicity, there is the deeper question of the theology within which Jesus’s execution is understood then and now by Christian believers. For The Passion of the Christ and millions of Christians, it was a theology of ...

Thank God, I will get a view of the Battle of Armageddon from the grand stand seats of the heavens. All who are born again will see the battle of Armageddon, but it will be from the skies (Carl McIntire, 1965) What then should be the believer’s attitude to the destruction of the world by fire? ...
The Gospels and Anti-Semitism
2009-07-21 00:15:00
In his book, ?God and Empire?, John Dominic Crossan makes a good case for the claims that the popular portrayals of Jesus’ passion is at the root of anti-Semitism: The residents of the Bavarian village of Oberammergau have staged a Passion Play every decade on the decade and also on special anniversaries in gratitude for protection ...
Jesus? Radical View of Divorce
2009-07-17 19:10:00
Next to homosexuality the issue that seems to be most contentious for the Christian church is that of divorce.  I?ve heard people say, when arguing for Christian tolerance of gays, that in the Bible Jesus never spoke out against homosexuality but he did specifically condemn divorce, a practice widely accepted within (if not a prime ...
gdgt Spreading The Gadget Gospel

Have you ever expressed the guilty pleasure of "I've have to have an iPhone," "I've gotta get a netbook," or "I need to buy a Wii." If so, you might be suffering from 'gadgetnitus', the obsessive desire to own the latest and greatest gadgetry in the market. Gadget freaks are a growing breed of man (and woman) who revel in possessing the current technological toys-du-jour while becoming savvy technophiles.

A Gospel-Centered Response to Blog Attacks in Bandit Country
2009-06-04 13:00:00
Carl Trueman has a great post on dealing with web critics or blog attacking bandits. I thought his advice was spot on, and his example of a Gospel-centered response to criticism quite helpful. I took the liberty of quoting Carl at some length, but I encourage you to read the full article. This raises ...
The Gospel?s Work in Believers, Conclusion
2009-06-03 15:24:00
Continued from part 2. We have seen that the Gospel has many purposes for believers beyond initial conversion.  It is as much for believers as unbelievers.  I’d like to start this final post by quoting Tim Keller once more at some length.  (I should mention that the quotes from Keller in this series come from this ...

The Gospel?s Work in Believers, Part 2
2009-05-31 19:57:00
Continued from part 1. So, in the gospel, as unbelievers we found acceptance through Christ and forgiveness from sin.  But as believers, don?t we rely on that acceptance as we work out our salvation?  Don?t we need to be constantly challenged to obey more and be more faithful to God?  Does our spiritual life depend in ...

Tweeting the Gospel
2009-05-06 05:20:00
Twitter is becoming more and more popular these days.  One of the things it does is force us to be succinct, which is good.  Nine Marks Ministries‘ blog, Church Matters, is challenging all Christian twitterers to share the gospel in 1 tweet.  It’s a novel idea, and causes us to focus on the true heart ...

JOHN M. FRAME ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LAW AND GOSPEL
2008-10-28 23:48:00
LAW AND GOSPELBy John M. FrameIt has become increasingly common in Reformed circles, as it has long been in Lutheran circles, to say that the distinction between law and gospel is the key to sound theology, even to say that to differ with certain traditional formulations of this distinction is to deny the gospel itself.Sometimes this argument employs Scripture passages like Rom. 3:21-31, emphasizing that we are saved by God's grace, through faith alone, apart from the works of the law. In my judgment, however, none of the parties to the debate questions that justification is by grace alone, through faith alone, by the imputed righteousness of Christ alone. But it is one thing to distinguish between faith and works, a different thing to distinguish law and gospel.1. The Traditional DistinctionThe distinction between law and gospel is not a distinction between a false and a true way of salvation. Rather, it is a distinction between two messages, one that supposedly consists exclusive...
Top Agenda of the Emergent Church: Social Gospel!

-By Don Boys, Ph.D. Emergent Church leaders are into the social gospel of the early 1920s, a failure and departure from the Word now as then. These videos go along way in showing how gospel music is related to the blues. I hope that it helps the frat boys, the aging boomers and the corporate blues fans to go deeper into the roots of the blues. I know that it helped me to understand the relationship between these two great American music forms that I have been listening to all my life. And not that it matters how you came to the music, it just helps to understand where the music came from. Gospel blues
2008-08-03 14:00:00
blues playlist: Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Didn't it Rain, 1964I have been trying to get my mind around exactly what the Gospel Blues are. I have posted links to various artist, and to various videos that I think of as Gospel Blues, but the difficulty is in the fact that I grew up in a time and place when music was not put into as many categories as it is today. Some of the music that I heard in church (like the video above) was no different then some of the music I heard coming out of the local Juke Joint. And on some occasions it might have even been the same person singing in church that was singing in the Juke Joint. I doubt that Rosetta Tharpe ever performed in a Juke Joint, but I have no doubt that she would have been right at home. For me there is not much difference between some blues music and some gospel music. The only way that I separate Gospel blues and the blues is by who is singing it and where they are singing it.Wikipedia has a great list of Gospel blues musicians. And A...
America ? A Pagan Nation?

In the conclusion to my series on understanding the land promise made to Israel, I made the claim that America is just another secular, pagan nation. Christopher Lewis - Crisis, A Change Is Required [2Cd][2008]What can someone expect from an album titled Crisis? For most people, the word has a negative connotation. For singer/songwriter/musician/prod-ucer Christopher Lewis, however, crisis takes on a completely different meaning. To him, it simply refers to the crossroads that everyone eventually faces in this journey called life and the destiny-altering decisions that must be made during these periods. Appropriately titled Crisis - Change Is Required, the album (Disc #1) contains songs that not only allow the listener to experience these crisis moments, but also gives hope that God will always help you through them. Lewis' vast musical influences can be heard throughout with sounds ranging from urban/R&B, pop, rock and of course gospel. Standout tracks include Joy the reflective Man Inside of Me and Show Me The Way featuring Bishop Paul S. Morton.Disc #2, Honest Heart bonus CD, is a collection of acoustic worship melodies fou...
