Does Grammar Matter with Data Governance?
2011-10-01 03:52:00
When individuals think about data governance one of the last things they often think about is grammar. In fact, most data stewards focus on the alpha numeric structure of their data or how the organization they work for categorizes different types of data. However, grammar is an important part of your data structure and their are a number of things you can do to implement policies and approaches in your data governance strategy to ensure that your data accounts for quality grammar. An area that grammar is most important when applying it to data governance is when you’re considering data elements that accept open ended information from individuals entering data into your system. This scenario may allow for data entry employees to use short hand, improper grammar, or text that only they can read. This makes it difficult to gain any value from the data you’ve collected and entered into your enterprise systems. Data Governance Tools – Grammar Checkers One of th...

Open Source Software To Be Used For E-Governance Projects
2011-07-08 06:09:00
The Economic Times carries a report on a draft policy which says all new E-Governance projects should use open source software on computers and attached devices. The Department of Information Technology which is behind the draft has put forward the draft to hardware manufacturers and others before finalizing it. A major benefit after this draft gets implemented is of course ‘saving money‘. Open source projects are available to use for absolutely no cost at all. In addition to that it would even give the implementing agencies control over their hardware and the ability to further customize it as per their needs. The report goes on to say that the Aadhar Project makes extensive use of Blackberry phones, a closed platform. It is ironic that the government has been taking steps to jeopardize the existence of Blackberry phones in India, and the same phones are being used in a very important government project. India has been a supporter of Free and Open source software...

Data Governance Tools
2011-01-02 07:20:00
As with any kind of industry, it is extremely critical for every business owner to be able to manage data efficiently and effectively. Data governance tools play a critical role in the organization because of its ability to help cut back on labor and eradicating manual processes through the use of integrated computer and software applications. Contrary to popular belief, data governance has been around for the past few decades. It is only but recently that more people have begun to appreciate what it can bring to their business. Because of the threat of recession and budget losses, company owners have really taken the effort to find ways on how to improve on business results. Data governance used to be an option, but it was not necessarily always the first choice to consider. This was because it was very expensive to avail of data governance services in the past. Today, this type of application is now very easy to use and will be applicable in any part of the region. If you are stil...
Finding a Good Data Governance Job
2010-12-19 19:47:00
I often help friends of mine who are looking for jobs in Data Governance by connecting them with colleagues, clients, former co-workers, and other industry professionals.  One think I hear quite often is how hard it is to find good jobs online.  I decided to do a bit of searching to see what the online job search landscape was like, and I paid particular attention to jobs in the data management industry. The first thing I noticed was the large number of scams there are on these job boards.  I see a large number of work-from-home scams, ‘get your bachelors degree in 3 months’ type scams, and all around fake looking job posts.  It seemed that no matter where I looked, I found stuff like this – CareerBuilder, Monster, HotJobs, Indeed, etc.  The one place I had good luck with finding real jobs while cutting through the garbage is Jobfox. The Jobfox Scam policy ensures that spam and other bad stuff stays out of their listings.  You can read a bit more about the th...
Is Puttaparthi Glitter the ?Shining India??
2010-12-15 23:31:00
Many are the demonstrably mistaken accusations thrown at those who have stood forth to expose Sathya Sai Baba and his international sect. For example, typically taking our remarks badly out-of-context, it is said that we are: "India bashers". But they do their cause harm; and we learn that many Sai devotees will have nothing to do with them - although we also know that some who are close to Sathya Sai Baba have assisted them in various ways. Indeed, the absurdity and intellectual dishonesty of their attempts to defame will not win them the favour of astute and questioning readers.
Data Governance Talent
2010-12-10 01:00:00
Can you imagine what the world would be like without information technology, data and research? Centuries ago, people had to just rely on each other without knowing how to manage the information that they have been exposed to. If we fast forward it to today’s generation, almost every single business in the organization have been dependent on data for their companies to thrive. Whether it’s something as a simple database for recordkeeping to something as advanced as a computerized system to help them generate millions in revenue, we all understand that managing accurate and complete data is of the essence. Keeping this consistent is the focal point of data governance. While data and information is now easily available to us, data governance is something that still needs to be managed by someone who really understands the business. Implementing the best talent acquisition strategies goes beyond just the simple knowledge of certain computer programs or a Black Belt in Six Sigma. Th...
Recovering from the Five Stages of Chicago Democrat Governance
2010-10-10 18:00:00
From Dan Proft... According to the KĂĽbler-Ross model, there are five distinct stages to the grieving process. Given President Obama's economic policies, it is likely you have experienced the majority of them in the last two years. This contribution to the understanding of the human psyche has inspired my own. I present the five stages to the process of Chicago Democrat governance, applicable at both the state and federal levels....

Data Stewards & Data Governance
2010-05-11 18:58:00
A Data Governance team banks on its credibility to effectively handle data and ensure that the quality of data is flawless.  These responsibilities aren’t easy to perform, hence the need to make use of Data Stewards.   Data come from many sources – in the form of internal and external customers as well as 3rd party vendors and providers.  The amount of data gathered from all of these sources can very quickly become overwhelming.  This is where the role of the Data Stewards come into play.  Data Stewards are usually people that assume collateral duties of managing data in addition to their other roles (which could be doing any other types of tasks anywhere in the enterprise). In some cases, the Data Stewardship group within an organization is composed of the Data Stakeholders themselves.  These Data Stewards ensure that data-related decisions are carried out in a way that doesn’t conflict with another person or entity within the organization.   Aside from technical ski...
Data Governance Decision Rights
2010-05-11 18:54:00
Decision Rights are a key concern when it comes to Data Governance.  They can be very hard to define since there are some considerations regarding data, specifically in relation to rules and standards, that must be addressed. One issue that must be reviewed is deciding on just exactly who has the power to decide. Likewise, questions regarding when and how decisions can be made and conceptualized should also be settled.  Therefore, to avoid any inconsistencies, the Data Governance program must clearly define and document all decision rights. This documentation should also include those detailed and further information on all decisions made in regards to data. These decision rights must be defined very well to avoid any conflict, specifically when it comes to settling issues. On the other hand, decision-rights for programs related to compliance are quite easy to identify. The executive level of an organization has the power to choose if they will follow a certain standard, law or re...
The Mission and Vision of Data Governance
2010-05-11 18:41:00
To identify all governing rules and regulations, to continuously protect the interests of data stakeholders and to meditate and settle any issues as a result of disobedience to the said rules and regulations are the three main mission of Data Governance. These missions of Date Governance reflect those greatly affected by the process, specifically those data stakeholders and other participants.  To simply yet fully comprehend the mission and vision of Data Governance, let us take the example of on of the most common organization- a bicameral government. Data governance operates like this kind of government with its three separate branches: the executive branch, legislative branch and the judicial branch- all having their own duties, functions, and checks & balances. For background, the legislative passes, makes and even changes laws, the judicial branch interprets these laws specifically in terms of settling and resolving issues and the executive branch makes sure that these law...

Copenhagen Summit to establish global governance?
2009-12-17 17:18:00
Don't be surprised but this article leaves me about as speechless as can be. Tell me what you think, for Copenhagen is waiting for Barack Obama's magic wand on Friday:One of the Rothschild offspring laments the difficulty of establishing global governance. The December 2009 Summit in Copenhagen is meant to be a goosestep in the direction of fascist world domination bwo 'climate change' which was established years ago in a directive from the UN.You know, it isn't new for environmentalism to be used for taking over governments such as when Hitler used it to help establish the Third Reich. All of this reminds me of a dream I had after first hearing a few years ago that polar ice caps and glaciers are quickly melting - that a satellite with lasers was melting them from space! Crazy, huh? Looked pretty amazing as dream images go.Even crazier: that the ancient manuscripts of Atlantis holding the secret to longevity are thought by some to be under said ice. Thing is, the 'longevity' ...

2009-12-11 09:05:00
Reliance Communications has reportedly been signed up to develop the m-governance infrastructure capabilities for governments of Mumbai, Maharashtra and Kerala. RCom will provide the telecom infrastructure working in collaboration with the respective Government’s local VAS service partners. The m-governance initiative would aim at connecting various government departments in these three circles via the mobile platform. The two VAS players who would be working with RCom on this project are said to be  IIST Infotech in Mumbai and MobeMe Wireless in Kerela. M-Governance Projects On The Rise M-Governance projects have been in the news lately with Spice digital bagging the project for Himachal Government. Even last year the Lok Sabha Secretariat had implemented m-governance by partnering with Value First. So the RCom deal doesn’t come as a surprise as various state governments are already looking at the m-governance route. Why is m-governance BIG? According to telecom tig...

Achieving Efficient Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) for Financial Ser
2009-09-23 09:00:00
Now more than ever, financial institutions are struggling to comply with regulations and manage the risks and penalties of failing to operate within the rules. Establishing, maintaining and proving compliance requires both money and time that executives would rather invest in top-line growth. The myriad of procedures, tasks, and behaviors that bear upon compliance can be overwhelming. Yet financial institutions that can master the management all of these activities—and demonstrate that they have done it—operate more efficiently, compete more effectively, and build their brands and good names in the marketplace. Fortunately, newly available software platforms that have become known as Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) technologies can help. This white paper discusses the drivers behind the growing awareness of GRC information technology and introduces the elements of an effective automated GRC system.Request Free!

Ground-Up SharePoint Governance
2009-05-11 02:00:00
In case you hadn't noticed, SharePoint is everywhere (a bit like pig flu hysteria).  It's a great success story for Microsoft, and the release of MOSS 2007 added a ton of features that inspired businesses to either roll out the platform or upgrade.  Once SharePoint is made available, there is no turning back... good luck wrestling a site out of the hands of a department that's come to rely on it.
Justice Muhammad Shahab ud Din and Prime Minister Pakistan Muhammad Ali Bog
2009-03-17 10:20:00
Muhammad Shahab ud Din came to judiciary from Indian Civil Services. He rose to the coveted post of Governor East Pakistan in 1954 but history always recognises him as Justice Muhammad Shahab ud Din.Prime Minister Pakistan Muhammad Ali Bogra once gave a statement about East Pakistan without consulting him. Justice Muhammad Shahab ud Din resigned in protest. Bogra apologised and requested the Justice to continue but he did not agree. He took out his pen and dried its ink in the pot in his office before leaving the Governor house. His ADC Major S. G. Gillani was with him who asked, ?Sir, why have you returned the ink to the pot here.? Reply of the Justice was, ?It belonged to state for official work. How I can use the official ink when I no more hold the office.?
Governor's Rule in Punjab
2009-02-27 06:30:00
Supreme Court of Pakistan has disqualified Shahbaz Sharif ? sitting Chief Minister Punjab - for holding a public office and his brother Nawaz Sharif ? twice former Prime Minister of Pakistan - for contesting elections. The decision reminded me what one of my friends from Police department said only a month back, the beginning of an end has started. Punjab government will go by Mar and the center by end this year. I was wondering if he had given loner margin for the center. There is so much going on for weak governments all over the country ? war in Swat and Tribal areas, Taliban quagmire, economic recession, price hick and relations with India and Afghanistan.
Gilani?s Arithmetic
2008-11-16 06:53:00
Anwar Syed Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani seems to have lost track of the simple arithmetic he learned in primary school. Talking to newsmen on Nov 6 he justified the recent recruitment of 22 new ministers and 18 ministers of state on grounds that appear to be flimsy. The prime minister said the move would not place a burden on the exchequer. This is hard to believe. In addition to the usual salaries and allowances, the new ministers will have furnished homes, automobiles, servants, guards and other perquisites. All of this will cost many millions of rupees which the government will pay out of the exchequer. The prime minister based the above assertion on the premise that the expenditure on having a minister did not exceed that required to maintain a parliamentarian. This premise is not valid for as we all know a member of parliament does not receive in addition to his salary the perquisites (mentioned above) that a minister does.Consider also that the parliamentarians (342 in the N...

No Home-Grown Education System
2008-11-13 18:14:00
Anwar SyedSome commentators contend that the present education system in this country is a legacy of the British colonial rule, and that therefore it does not go well with our nativity. They would replace it with one that is rooted in our own historical experience and values. They assume that there was once a system that worked to good effect, and that it should be revived. This assumption is not entirely valid.Government-funded primary and middle schools, open to all those who might wish to enter, did not exist during the medieval ages. Education was provided mostly by seminaries, focusing on the scriptures and preparing young people for careers connected with religion. Colleges surfaced in Baghdad, Cairo, Rome, Paris, Oxford and Cambridge but these also started out as seminaries and only later took in mathematics, humanities, and the hard sciences.During the same period certain individuals in the Muslim world and Europe emerged as great scholars. Most of them began their education ...

Companies need to step up Singapore corporate governance, transparency
2008-04-26 08:27:00
Companies need to step up Singapore corporate governance, transparency By Rachel Kelly,  SINGAPORE: Minority shareholders in Singapore have plenty to think about in recent weeks, with the red flag raised on corporate governance and transparency issues in not just one, but three companies. These companies are Jade Technologies, Swissco International and China Aviation Oil. Associate Professor Ho Yew Kee, Vice Dean, Finance and Administration, NUS Business School, said: “I think it is a sign that corporate governance is taking an effect on the market and companies suddenly realise that they can no longer do things in the quiet. “For example, if an independent director is resigning, they can no longer sweep it under the carpet because they realise that they need to prepare statements. They have to explain to the market as to the kind of signal that is being sent by the resignation of the independent director.” Minority shareholders in Singapore are also increasingly ...

One of the greatest concerns is that municipal public health officials contribute to damages by eclipsing the history of persons with sensitivities behind controversy about the recent additional theories of so-called "doctors of environmental medicine." Thoughts on Global Governance Standards
2008-03-28 04:33:00
The general idea behind global governance standards is that, if all companies either adhere to the same standard or are measured against the same standard, then investors and other observers will be able to assess how well they are governed. Governance is important because well governed companies attract a premium to their share-price, and poorly ...
Internet Governance
2008-02-27 22:30:00
The recent case of Pakistan blocking access to YouTube underlines the need for better governance of the Internet. I’m not suggesting we should have heavy-handed, bureaucratic control. But the Internet is now critical to business and government services so we need a better international understanding of national responsibilities, especially for supporting services such as security and incident response. The UK concept of a “Third Way” suggested by the Rt Hon Alan Michael MP gets my support.
