Government Spending

While Millions Hunger, the Bureaucrats Feast
2008-06-04 18:20:00
Your United States tax dollars are helping to support this summit, which gives men like Robert Mugabe a platform to attack the United States and blame others for his actions. And your tax dollars also give him a big meal with Lemon mousse with raspberry sauce for dessert, all while he intentionally starves his own people.
This Is Not Homeschooling

Because Rebecca is enrolled as a government school student, the government must provide an adequate education. Since she refuses to go sit in the classroom, the local school board decided to pay for school to come to her. Unfortunately, she just didn't like her tutor. Or boarding school. Or any other type of actual studying.
See, This is the Problem With Congressional Republicans
2008-05-20 14:24:00
They are losing elections because not only is the base disgusted with them, but the center doesn't trust them. They simply do not do what they say they will do. They used to stand for small government, now they pass $300 billion farm bills, loaded with earmarks and tax breaks.
Breakdown of the Farm Bill Spending - Where Does the Money Go?
2008-05-14 09:58:00
You would think that in the Farm Bill, the bulk of the moeny would go to, well, farms. Instead, a bulk of the money goes to domestic nutrition programs. What exactly is a "domestic nutrition program?" Food stamps.
Democrats fail to control government spending [Digg]
2008-05-13 13:50:00
Everything we earned up until that date was required to satisfy our tax bill for the year. That means Americans, in effect, belong to the government and are forced to work for the government. Forced. The money is taken, not given and that means we are anything but free. We ended the practice of owning people and forcing them to work for free.

Harry Reid Wants $45,000,000 for MagLev Train to Disneyland
2008-04-21 10:36:00
While Nevada faces “a multi-billion shortfall in basic highway, bus and other transportation needs,” Harry Reid is earmarking $45 million dollars for a train to Disneyland: Start talking about magnetic levitation trains and people quickly fall into two categories: dreamy-eyed futurists whose eyes widen with the promise of 300 mph travel or dismissive cynics who see the next boondoggle heading down the track. When it comes to building a maglev train between Las Vegas and Southern California, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has remained a believer. This week, he is risking the wrath of the Senate anti-pork czars to secure $45 million to push the train project along. Who wouldn’t want a 300 mile per hour train in Southern California? So what reason does land baron Harry Reid give for this train to So Cal? Pure show: ?If it?s going to be really done in a big way, a Las Vegas way, the magnetic levitation would be the way to do it,? Reid said. ?We could bring someone...
Republicans Want to Rein in Spending. No, Really.
2008-04-17 11:00:00
Remember when the Repubican party was known as the party of fiscal conservatism? Well, they are trying at least: The latest effort to restore fiscal responsibility comes in the form of a Spending Limit Constitutional Amendment. The Republican Study Committee (RSC) is targeting out of control federal spending in order to equalize federal government spending with national economic growth. Their goal is to decrease the burden on American families, so that the budget does not increase more than the collective incomes of those families. I would have been happier with “so that the budget does not increase.” For me, here is the saddest paragraph in the article: About ten members of the RSC represented the amendment at the press conference, including earmark reform leader Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) and RSC Chairman Jeb Hensarling (R-Tex.). Hensarling reminded listeners that ?as bad as Republicans are, Democrats are a thousand times worse,” not only on spending but by raisin...

So on March 26th, Senator Chuck Hagel the Great (R-NE) was interviewed by Sean Hannity the Great (R) and Alan Colmes (D) on the Hannity & Colmesshow, to discuss the war in Iraq, conservativism, government spending, and his new book America: Our Next Chapter: Tough Questions, Straight Answers.  Here’s a video of the interview: And here’s a ...
81% Say US Going in Wrong Direction, 41% Have A Little Sense
2008-04-04 08:39:00
Big headline: Poll: 81 percent think US on wrong track I agree. The country is on the wrong track, or should I say road? Seeing as how bad news hits the airwaves more than good news, it is no surprise that people think the country is heading in the wrong direction. I mean look at this article: More than 80 percent of Americans believe the country is headed in the wrong direction, the highest such number since the early 1990s, according to a new survey. The CBS News-New York Times poll released Thursday showed 81 percent of respondents said they believed “things have pretty seriously gotten off on the wrong track.” That was up from 69 percent a year ago, and 35 percent in early 2002. The survey comes as housing turmoil has rocked Wall Street amid an economic downturn. The economy has surpassed the war in Iraq as the dominating issue of the U.S. presidential race, and there is now nearly a national consensus that the United States faces significant problems, the poll f...
Obama Proposes Further Strengthening Government?s Role in Your Life
2008-03-27 18:16:00
At what point did we lose it? There was a time in this country, when we believed that we were responsible for ourselves, and if we made it, we made it on our own. And if we failed, we failed on our own. Those days are long gone. Barack Obama wants to take $30 billion from Americans who earned it, and give it to people who made poor investment choices, and lost money: Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama called for greater government regulation of the U.S. financial system on Thursday and proposed a new $30 billion economic stimulus plan to help homeowners. To help homeowners? I’m a homeowner. I don’t want your damn help! Or does he mean the home owners who speculated in the home market, and lost money when the market tanked? The people who signed loans they knew had ARMs when they didn’t even have JOBs? The people who bought WAY over their heads? Yeah, we responsible tax payers have to subsidize these guys, so no one fails. “If we can exten...
How Much Tax Do You Pay?
2008-02-25 11:15:00
It’s that time of year - it’s tax time! At least that’s what the evening news tells me. Actually, paying taxes is a pretty constant event in this country. People most often think of paying taxes as the money the government takes out of your paycheck. While that is certainly the single biggest collective lump for most of us, it doesn’t even begin to cover all taxes that you pay throughout a typical year. Here’s a partial list showing just some of the ways the government takes money from us. Cigarette Tax Corporate Income Tax (passed on to the consumer) Dog License Tax Federal Unemployment Tax (FUTA) Fishing License Tax Food License Tax Gasoline Tax Hunting License Tax Inheritance Tax Interest expense (tax on the money) Inventory tax IRS Interest Charges (tax on top of tax) Liquor Tax Local Income Tax Marriage License Tax Property Tax Retail Sales Taxes Recreational Vehicle Tax Road Toll Booth Taxes State Income Tax Telephone federal excise tax, uni...
Rich People And Politicians Aren’t Evil; Government Spending Is
2008-02-14 13:23:00
Stadium construction is always a hot topic amongst sports economists, particularly when it comes to public subsidies. Right or wrong, the general consensus is that the benefits for municipalities rarely outweigh the costs. Since the teams keep almost all of the revenue generated from the facilities, and often pay extremely low rent fees, this shouldn’t be a great surprise. But the next question seems to be generate more emotional responses. Namely, who is most at fault: the rich, “greedy” team owners, or the politicians that enable them? The real answer? Neither. The Gall of the GOP
2008-02-13 19:29:00
Maybe they think it will work. Maybe they are so deluded they actually think that calling Barack Obama out for his spending will resonate with the American public. I can’t imagine anyone hearing the Grand Old Party try to pass itself off as fiscally conservative, heck even fiscally responsible, and not cramp up in fits of laughter. But still they are trying: If Obama Could Enact All Of His Campaign Proposals, Taxpayers Would Be Faced With Financing Over $850 Billion In New Spending Over One White House Term Oh my goodness, who will save us from this crazy Democrat and his spend happy ways? That ship has sailed for the GOP. They can get it back, but it is going to take more than talk. Or a fancy thermometer graphic with Obama’s smiling face on it. It will take time, sacrifice and some fiscal conservatism. Remember that? I don’t buy it, and I’m a Republican. Actually, now that I think about it, it’s insulting to me. Like I’m supposed to just look at...
Libertarian Party Sends Its Condolences to the Republican Party
2008-02-11 21:48:00
With the rise of John McCain as the front runner, and the only other candidate in the race being Mike Huckabee, the Libertarian Party felt condolences were in order. So they sent a wreath of flowers to the RNC, expressing their sympathy on the apparent “death of small-government principles within” the party: The wreath was hand-delivered to the D.C. offices of the Republican National Committee. “We simply felt the need to express our heartfelt sympathy for the Republican Party as they undergo this tough time within their party,” says Libertarian Party National Media Coordinator Andrew Davis, who delivered the wreath. “Given that it has become readily apparent that Senator McCain will soon be the presidential nominee for the Republican Party,” reads a card that accompanied the wreath addressed to RNC Chairman Mike Duncan, “we, the staff of the Libertarian National Committee, send our condolences to you upon the death of small-government p...
$3,110,000,000,000 Budget Proposal
2008-02-04 19:06:00
Good Lord: President Bush on Monday sent Congress a record $3.11 trillion budget request that sees the federal deficit widening over the next two years but projects a balanced budget by 2012. The budget is the final one submitted by Bush, but it’s the first ever sent in its entirety electronically. Gone are the massive budget books that end up sitting on shelves gathering dust. “This is a good, solid budget. It’s not only an innovative budget, in that it’s coming to Congress over the Internet, it’s a budget that’s balanced — gets to balance in 2012 and saves taxpayers money,” Bush said at the White House after a meeting with his Cabinet. The budget request seeks a 6% rise in total government spending for fiscal 2009, which begins Oct. 1. The deficit would total $407 billion. The White House expects to end the current fiscal year with a deficit of $410 billion — a sharp increase from the deficit of $162 billion last year. ShareThis
Berkeley: ?You Marines needs to get out of our town.? Sen. Jim DeMint: ?
2008-02-02 19:05:00
Sen. Jim DeMint just earned my “Coolest Senator of the Week Award” with these statements right here: “The First Amendment gives the City of Berkeley the right to be idiotic, but from now on they should do it with their own money.” “If the city can?t show respect for the Marines that have fought, bled and died for their freedom, Berkeley should not be receiving special taxpayer-funded handouts,” See, Berkeley’s City Council voted this week to tell the Marines to get their recruiting office out of their city. The Marines, who fought the Battle of Iwo Jima for a month, thought that was kinda funny: In the meantime, a senior Marine official tells FOX News that the Marine office in Berkeley isn’t going anywhere. “We understand things are different there, but some people just don’t get it. This is a part of the military machine that gives them the right to do what they do, but what they are doing is extreme.” Not to a libe...
CNN Shows How Tight Money Is in America Today, Unemployed Forced to Buy Fla
2008-01-31 18:01:00
Is no one responsible for themselves anymore? I am told that things are bad all over America, that people have to choose between food or heat, between food and meds, people who bought houses with ARMs when they knew they didn’t even have a job are losing thier homes…OH WOE IS ME! Personal responsibility? It doesn’t exist. Take this CNN Piece for instance: ?Veronica McNeil has two kids,? said CNN correspondent Alina Cho. ?She recently lost her job. Her husband?s an iron worker and the family is feeling the pinch.? While McNeil was introduced as struggling financially, she then announced that for the right price she?d buy an unnecessary high-ticket item. ?If I?m here to buy baby stuff and I see a TV at a good sale price, I?ll grab it,? McNeil said. Cho pointed toward ?rising gas and home heating oil prices and Americans losing their homes? for money being ?tight.? Unfortunately, Cho entirely missed the personal responsibility angle ? if there is s...
Just Because Universal Health Care Failed in California, Illinois, Wisconsi
2008-01-31 00:03:00
Both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama plan to institute a universal health care plan when they become president. They pledge to cover every citizen in the United States, but they don’t want us to know one thing: how much it will really cost. California just had its latest plan for universal health care squashed before it was even voted for. It was not squashed by the RINO governor, but by the Democrats in the California Congress. They looked at the program and saw its fatal flaw. It was just too expensive: Like collapses in Illinois, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, this one crumpled because of the costs, which are always much higher than anticipated. The truth teller was state Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata, who thought to ask about the price tag of a major new entitlement amid what’s already a $14.5 billion budget shortfall. An independent analysis confirmed the plan would be far more expensive than proponents admitted. Even under the most favorable assumptions,...
Fred Thompson’s Plan to Reduce Federal Government Spending
2008-01-11 00:59:00
In 2007, the federal government’s spending rose to an astounding $2.8 trillion– the equivalent of $22,000 per household. Growth in federal government spending, however, rarely translates into better services for the American people. Solutions for many public policy problems are best found in the private sector, and then at the State and local level–not in ...
America?s Farm Subsidies and the World Economy
2007-12-06 13:00:00
The United States produces a great deal of food each year. Actually, it overproduces food. This is the result of federal farm policies that pay farmers by the amount of crop they produce each year. This results in lower prices for grains, not only in America, but around the world. And the rest of the world isn’t happy about it. So why should I care what the rest of the world thinks? The main reason is national security. It takes a while to get there, but stick with me. The overproduction of any commodity results in the lowering of the price. It is simple supply and demand. In America, the farmer is compensated with subsidies if the market is low. However, farmers in other countries are not. While he was President of the World Bank, Paul Wolfowitz called for the end of subsidies because of the negative effects they had on poor nations. He understood what I am going to explain to you: Mr Wolfowitz increased pressure on the industrialised world when he said the tempor...
Scams, Scandals and Downright Stupidity: The Fraud, Waste and Abuse of the
2007-12-05 13:00:00
There is a combination in Washington that draws fraud, waste and abuse like bees to honey. The combination is free money plus government bureaucracy. The federal farm subsidy program has created some stories that are as unbelievable as they are outrageous. Your Government at Work As we discussed in part two of this series, farm subsidies encourage overproduction because farmers are paid by the amount of crop produced. So while the system is unintentionally increasing the number of acres being planted, it is also paying farmers not to plant. The government spends around $2 billion a year for fields to remain empty: Such fields cover about 5 million acres of North and South Dakota. Nationwide, there are 34 million acres in the conservation reserve, an area equal to about 7 percent of U.S. land that’s planted in crops. That’s an area bigger than the state of New York. That was in 2005. The Heritage Foundation puts the number of acres left empty at around 40 million now...
How We Got to $286 Billion in Corporate Welfare: A Short History of Farm S
2007-12-03 13:00:00
One of the bills Congress still has to vote on is the mammoth $286 billion Farm Bill. Farm subsidies have not always been a part of the federal budget. There was a time that the federal government understood and respected the Constitutional role it had in agriculture. That all changed with Herbert Hoover. Following World War I, America’s farmers were dealing with falling crop prices. American farmers had been compensating for the lack of agriculture in Europe and following the Great War, there was a glut of product on the market. The farmers turned to the federal government. They found a friend in President Hoover, who started the Federal Farm Board via the Agricultural Marketing Act of 1929. The act hoped to solve the low farm prices through a series of price fixes. For example, if a bushel of wheat was priced below 80 cents at market, or 20 cents a pound for cotton, the federal government would buy it up, store it and hope to sell it at a profit at a later date. Se...
Medicare Dollars v. the Free Market
2007-11-30 20:44:00
Remember the brilliant words of P.J. O’Rourke: “If you think health care is expensive now, wait until you see what it costs when it’s free.” : Medicare spends billions of dollars each year on products and services that are available at far lower prices from retail pharmacies and online stores, according to an analysis of federal data by The New York Times. The government agency has paid above-market costs for dozens of items, a comparison of Medicare figures with retail catalogs finds. For example, last year Medicare spent more than $21 million on pumps to help older and disabled men attain erections, paying about $450 for the same device that is available online for as little as $108. Even for a simple walking cane, which can be purchased online for about $11, the government pays $20, according to government data. These widespread price discrepancies, including those for oxygen services, have been noted in dozens of regulatory reports. The oxygen services...

Farmers Report Near Record Profits, Senate Adds $10,000,000,000 to Farm Bil
2007-11-13 14:29:00
This makes sense: Thanks to the application of a little last-minute budgetary magic, the farm bill before the Senate this week authorizes about $10 billion in new subsidies, price guarantees and disaster aid in the next decade, even as farmers report near-record profits. There is a new $5.1 billion “disaster trust fund,” as well as a revenue ...
Hillary on Social Security: ?I do not believe it is in crisis??
2007-10-16 01:46:00
Like the good socialist that she is, Hillary Clinton refused to accept the failures of a government run entitlement system, even one as obviously doomed as Social Security: Speaking with the Post’s Dan Balz and Ann Kornblut aboard her “Middle Class Express” bus in Iowa, Clinton announced that we have no Social Security problem. “I do ...

One of the themes I promote over and over again is if a product is needed, the market will make it profitable. Government subsidies are unnecessary. Let the product fail or succeed on its own accord. That is what makes it disappointing when I see Fred Thompson making this promise: Meeting with reporters, ...
Ron Paul on Federal Government Spending

Along with being much more morally justifiable, a limited republic is much more pragmatic than an expansive central government. The reason this is so is simple: government wastes money because it doesn’t have to earn it. It is much easier to stupidly spend other people’s hard earned money. Click here to read the venerable ...
