Government bailouts of Freddie and Fannie like giving candy to problem chil
2008-07-15 21:10:00 'Let them fail' Government bailouts of Freddie and Fannie like giving candy to problem children "Let them fail," says Libertarian Party spokesperson Andrew Davis, referring to the mortgage institutions Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, who the Bush administration has said it plans to rescue from financial collapse. "Let them fail, and let them learn from their mistakes on their own dime," says Davis. "Bailing out these two institutions will only delay the inevitable outcome of any financial firm insulated from the market by government backing. The long run damage of continuing a policy of bailouts far exceeds any short term woes in letting the market consume failing institutions." The Libertarian Party is calling for an end to government bailouts, which it equates to nothing more than welfare for businessmen. The Party believes that government support of these institutions decreases the incentive to make responsible decisions, and unfairly socializes the risk--putting taxpayers...

How To Get What You Want From The Chinese Government, Part II. Make It Win
2008-07-03 10:23:00 In The Subtle Art of Lobbying the Chinese Government , Alistair Nicholas of Off The Record posted on our post on how to lobby the Chinese government. Nicholas noted something very important I left out in my post. Our post focused on who to lobby and the logistics of lobbying, but it left out what to say to get the government to go along. Off The Record filled in that missing element rather well: My key learning over 20 odd years of lobbying both successfully and, sometimes, unsuccessfully across three countries are that politicians the world over are all the same. If you want them to support your cause you need to figure out what’s in it for them and offer a deal they can’t refuse. I’m not talking about delivering brown paper bags stuffed with cash or other bribes. * * * * Before you approach a politician for help you need to (with apologies to John F. Kennedy) ask not what your government can do for you but rather what you can do for your government. This is the s...

How To Get What You Want From The Chinese Government
2008-07-02 00:19:00 Well, within limits. Bizcult has an interesting post up on the basics of lobbying the Chinese government. The post is entitled, "How to Lobby the Chinese Government," and it is based on Scott Kennedy's book The Business of Lobbying in China. According to Kennedy, Chinese policy arises from three things: 1) bargaining between elite politicians and various bureaucracies, 2) expertise provided by intellectuals that include economists, lawyers and researchers in government-sponsored research institutes, 3) National People’s Congress legislation. To lobby effectively, you need to concentrate on these three processes and the policies they create. Lobbying by foreigners is commonly done in China and the most successful lobbyists are those who communicate and make personal visits regularly. Kennedy has the following to say about where and how to lobby: "Lobbying via Chinese trade associations can have mixed results." There are many such associations, but only some of the...

To Clean Out K Street Cut Government, Says Bob Barr
2008-06-28 14:49:00 Saturday, June 28, 2008 This is on www.nationelections.blogspot.co-mTo Clean Out K Street Cut Government, Says Bob Barr “Big Government reduces our liberty and prosperity,” says Bob Barr, the Libertarian Party candidate for president. “It also corrupts the political process. For it is pursuit of federal dollars and regulatory privileges that has led to the explosive growth of the lobbying complex we call K Street,” explains Barr. After the Republican Party took control of Congress in 1994, the GOP leadership attempted to take control of K Street, forcing the hiring of more Republicans and using the lobbies for partisan advantage. “Now the Democrats, having won control of Congress in 2006, are trying to do the same,” observes Barr. Roll Call reports that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and other Democratic leaders are demanding that K Street accept and work with the new rulers of Capitol Hill.“Unfortunately, the housing legislation ...
Suing For Access To China Government Information
2008-06-20 10:35:00 The Chinese Law Prof blog has a fascinating (at least for legal geeks) post on the first Beijing lawsuit to access government information under the Regulations on Open Government Information which came into effect on May 1. Such a case would have been unthinkable even five years ago and the court's accepting the filing of this case is progress. The underlying facts of the case are also fascinating because it involves someone seeking to trace what had happened to family property during the Cultural Revolution. My firm has assisted in lawsuits seeking compensation for property taken by Eastern European governments, but I have always been under the impression such lawsuits would be pointless in China. Am I right or wrong about this?

Hostile Government Take-Over Bid
2008-06-17 06:19:00 -By Thomas E. Stuart Wheeler takes Government to court over Lisbon Treaty.
2008-06-09 08:00:00 Stuart Wheeler gets his day in court today. He intends to prove that Gordon Brown's refusal to allow us the referendum his government promised in their manifesto is:"Not only immoral but illegal, too . "This was a referendum the people of Britain were promised well before the last election, during it, and after it. "But instead of fulfilling that promise, Gordon Brown has tried to push the Constitution in via the back door by rebranding a document and presenting it as a completely different text. "This is a ridiculous argument. Leaders across Europe - including Valery Giscard d'Estaing, the author of the EU Constitution - have acknowledged, indeed almost gloated about the fact, that the Treaty is the Constitution in all but name. "Furthermore, regardless of what name it is given, the vast majority of the British public want a referendum on this Treaty as demonstrated by the results of a YouGov poll last month."I had to laugh at the response from the Foreign Office spokesman: "Hard...

The ugly Americans
2008-06-08 16:16:00 In the mad rush to blame speculators for high oil prices, our solons in Washington have inadvertently revealed a U.S.-centric, 20th century mindset. I’m sure Sens. Carl Levin and Dianne Feinstein think they’re enlightened types, far beyond any sort of “ugly American” mentality. But that’s exactly what they betray with their notion of closing the “London loophole.” Says Levin, “The [Commodity Futures Trading Commission] didn’t have good information about who was trading how much US oil when, and whether traders subject to US speculation limits were circumventing them by trading in London. That’s why I and my colleagues have repeatedly introduced legislation…

June 7, 1926--Milwaukee's First Airmail Service Flown
2008-06-07 20:01:00 The Wisconsin Historical Society informs of this historic occassion: a airmail service is from Chicago to Milwaukee to LaCrosse to St. Paul is up and operating before the Great Depression.. Are you telling me that we cannot--82 years later!--have a passenger railway operating from Chicago to Milwaukee to Madison to LaCrosse to Eau Claire to St. Paul? I don't think it is a matter of can versus cannot; instead, it is a matter of policy versus politics. Let your representatives know that they should quit playing politics with policy that need to be implemented.

U.S. government keeps LORAN alive.
2008-06-07 02:21:00 This year, the Department of Homeland Security decided that a 30-year-old navigation system used by mariners will be upgraded to back up GPS. The decision preserves the Long-Range Aids to Navigation (LORAN) network, which has been teetering on the verge of forced retirement since the 1980s, according to the Coast Guard?s Navigation Center Popular Mechanics I remember back in the day, sailing around the Puget Sound before we had a LORAN system on the sailboat, charts and navigation and knowing your buoys and reading light signals etc. Then we got a LORAN receiver and it was easy, none of that old fashioned navigation necessary: plug in a waypoint and go. Now of course GPS is even better. But the LORAN system provides much the same capabilities...at least to shipping...on the coasts of the US...which is what matters to the Navy and the Coast Guard. All the consumer products would still be crippled if GPS had a massive failure of some kind. They'd be...

Will UPA government win in Next Election?
2008-06-06 19:33:00 In present conditions, it becomes very easy to predict that future elections will never be going easy for the Congress lead UPA government. Already, Congress is constantly losing one after another election in different states. This trend can even continue in centre election also causing exit of UPA from centre. Recent hike in oil and gas prices have already angered many poor and middle class people of India, who are finding it hard to manage their budgets. On the second hand, inflation is on constant rise week after week touching new heights. Therefore, common people have no help available in their hands and situations are only becoming more difficult for them. Soon we will also see effect of rise in petrol and diesel prices in other areas of life. Most of the common eatable items are transported through rail and road network, therefore, rising in petrol and diesel prices will increase cost of transportation of all these items. Therefore, there are good chances that we can see more ri...
