Veep Pool Swimming With Governors
2008-02-24 16:32:00 The Republican and Democratic nominees are certain to come from the Senate. Thus, the nation's governors seem a ready pool of would-be vice presidential candidates who could provide management experience lacking at the top of each ticket. "Seven governors have become president of the United States, and four have become vice president," said Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, the chairman of the National Governors Association opening its winter meeting with such bits of history. The Republican didn't, of course, mention that he's among the many governors who might have the chance to try to increase those numbers. He, like the others, tends to eschew such talk. Still, names of more than a dozen governors have been floated as potential running mates on the Republican and Democratic tickets. Arizona Sen. John McCain is assured the Republican nomination, while Democratic Sens. Barack Obama of Illinois and Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York are continuing to battle for the Democratic nod...

2007 Governors Races Rankings
2007-09-20 03:26:00 There are only three, but they're good ones;Kentucky: Incumbent Republican Ernie Fletcher looks like he's in big trouble against Democratic former Lt. Governor Steve Beshear, who has led by double digits since he won the primary back in May. Lean DemocraticLouisiana: An open seat is the best hope for the Democrats, and even thought it's open, Rep. Bobby Jindal of Metarie is way ahead, but don't count Chalmette State Rep. Walter Boasso out just yet. If it goes to a runoff, Boasso has a shot. Not a very good one though. Lean RepublicanMississippi: Haley Barbour is too popular here, he should be on the Republican VP shortlist or even the 2012 Presidential candidate shortlist should they loose next year. The only Democrat running is John Arthur Eaves, Jr, a pro-life, anti-gay marriage Democrat who has declared; ?I am a Democrat because I am a Christian.? It may play well in conservative Mississippi, but conservatives down there have no issue with Barbour. Solid Republican

Governors as Senate Candidates
2007-09-12 04:54:00 Swing State Project has an article up cataloguing how sitting and former governors fared in their attempts to become U.S. Senators since 1986. Overall, 24 governors made the attempt and 15 were successful. That's a 62.5% success rate, which isn't bad, but shows it's by no means a certainty that governors, even very popular ones, will win Senate races. However, over the past three cycles only 1 of 4 such candidates was successful. There's not a significant difference in success rates between races for open seats and challenges against incumbents, as 8 of 12 governors who ran for open seats were successful while 7 of 12 governors who challenged incumbents were successful (although two successful challenges in 2000 had unusual circumstances: Mel Carnahan won in MO despite having been killed in a plane crash several weeks before the election, while Tom Carper won in DE after Bill Roth fainted several times while campaigning during the final runup to the election). This is inter...

Governors Win: The case for Mike Huckabee
2007-08-20 17:01:00 Look back into the history of the past century, and one U.S. political-cultural truth is eminently clear: Governors win the presidency. Just consider the following: George W. Bush: Governor of Texas. Bill Clinton: Governor of Arkansas. Ronald Reagan, California; Jimmy Carter, Georgia; Franklin Roosevelt, New York; Calvin Coolidge, Massachusetts; Warren G. Harding (Lt. Governor of Ohio before serving as a U.S. Senator but missing over two thirds of the roll-call votes during his tenure and hence leaving little paper trail); Woodrow Wilson (New Jersey); William Howard Taft (governor-general of the Philippines); Theodore Roosevelt (New York). Governors win, and when it?s a governor running against a U.S. senator or even vice president or president, the governor wins. Senators who become president are those who run against other senators or ascend to the presidency after serving as vice president when a sitting president dies in office. The last senator to win the presidency without b...

Call for school governors to be given same status as non-executive director
2007-06-28 10:03:00 The contribution made by school governors should be given the same recognition as company non-executive directors, especially by future employers, according to an education charity. The call by the School Governors' One-Stop Shop follows research that found governors were critical to the successful shaping and direction of a school, and performed a role similar to that of non-executive board members at a major company. Following changes to the remit of schools, governing bodies now have non-executive responsibilities for the appointment of senior staff, the strategic direction of the school and financial management. The report said governors added analytical, problem-solving, decision-making, communication, teamworking and listening skills to the mix. Head teachers were also appreciative of skills in areas such as marketing and public relations. Steve Acklam, the charity's chief executive, said: "Ideally, we would like to see a measurable change in the way governors are...
Tweaked rules after Board of Governors meeting in New York
2007-06-21 02:18:00 A player may now be awarded a penalty shot if he is fouled on a clear breakaway anywhere in the neutral or attacking zones. Previously, a penalty shot was awarded only when a player on a clear breakaway was fouled on the attacking side of the centre line. For more on the tweakings, see TSN.I don't mind the above rule as much. But I would really like to see the general obstruction calls lessened. There are too many penalties now! I hate watching powerplay after powerplay. If the players would stop all the obstruction then fine. But is that ever going to happen to a degree where we don't see 6 obstruction calls per team during most games? That's already 24 minutes of power play time in one game without the trips, roughing, etc included. Half of the minutes in games are special teams. Bullshit! How about only making the call if the obstruction actually impedes the puck handler's progress? T Tags: NHL rules changes
Conspiracy between Democrat governors against Bush or are they just that du
2007-06-01 02:14:00 I don't believe in conspiracies, but this sounded a little fishy to me. I'll say it's just a coincidence to keep my unblemished record of non-paranoia. Anyways, three governors recently chose to take cheap shots at the president with the following poll-tested idiocies: First Ted Strickland: I remain concerned for the continued and unprecedented sacrifice our men and women in the Ohio National Guard bear in relation to the ongoing conflict in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere," wrote Mr. Strickland. "As Governor of Ohio, I will continue to press for assurances that every Ohio Soldier is provided with the most up-to-date equipment and that every Ohio Soldier receives appropriate training. As I have expressed earlier, our Soldiers and their families deserve nothing less." He asked for a "timely" response to his request for Mr. Bush's assurances that Ohio soldiers will be provided with the most modern equipment, including individual body armor systems, M-4 rifles, and other weapo...

Indonesian Governors Curb Logging to Reduce Climate Change
2007-04-28 02:16:00 The governors of Indonesia's three most forested provinces have pledged to jointly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from logging and land clearing to reduce the impact of climate change. Tropical rainforests absorb the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, the main gas responsible for global warming. The governors of Aceh, Papua and Papua Barat provinces agreed on a policy of "environmentally friendly, sustainable economic development and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation." The unprecedented pact to reduce carbon emissions was made Thursday at a roundtable meeting in Bali at the site of the upcoming United Nations climate change conference in December. Facilitated by the World Bank, the roundtable was attended by representatives of the Indonesian central government, civil society, the international community, and the private sector.
For Governors, a Temptation to Go Faster
2007-04-20 09:33:00 DAVID KOCIENIEWSKI and RONALD SMOTHERS There is always another hand to shake, delaying departures. Constituents or colleagues waiting at the next stop to have their photos taken or questions answered. Too many meetings squeezed into too few hours. From the Empire Zone: N.Y. Mayor on Seat Belts | A Poll on Corzine's Job ApprovalSo despite guidelines reserving flashing lights and high speed for emergencies, former governors and others who frequently rode in their motorcades said it was hardly unusual in this state of 2,835 highway miles for them to race as fast as 91 miles per hour, as Gov. Jon S. Corzine’s sport utility vehicle was doing en route to a meeting Thursday night when it had a devastating crash. “It happened all the time,” recalled Pete McDonough, who traveled frequently with Gov. Hotchkiss was one of the longest serving chairman having served six, two year terms and was a key component in ending the most recent labour dispute, but not until after a season had been canceled. During Satellite Hotstove on CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada, Eric Duhastschek noted that the executive committee will compile a short list of canidates for chairman, which is one of the top three jobs in the game. He was told that George Gillette from the Montreal Candadians is someone who might be on the list along with “progressive owner” Ted Leonsis.
