2010-10-13 10:00:00 Funny, I would have thought a unit sporting only three consistently contributing rotation members might be on the downturn near the halfway point of the season. Perhaps never running around in the backfield all season saved their energy, because this was their best performance of the season. There were better results against Boston College, but Pitt actually has some measure of talent. Pressure was consistent on Tino Sunseri all game, every line starter registered a hit on the quarterback, and Ian Williams and Sean Cwynar both had tackles for loss. It's all I can do to not wonder what grade I'd give if the strong rush on the final drive got the credit for forcing a game-ending intentional grounding the endzone. Ah, bad reffing.

The game plan seemed a lot more simplified, Crist threw a lot of quick outs and slants, which drew in the defense and allowed him to see a lot of single coverage when he did throw down the field. For his part, Dayne threw the deep ball fairly well, particularly in long completions to TJ Jones and Michael Floyd (Floyd's was called back), and he didn't make any of the bonehead reads that marred previous contests. Still....he just ain't right. 39 passes for 242 yards still isn't very efficient, he missed receivers with inaccuracy and heinously obvious miscommunication at key moments. All it really takes to have a situation where the manager can point to the bullpen without mumbling obscenities to himself or smoking half a pack of cigarettes in the time it takes him to walk out, is a reliable closer, two rock-solid set-up men, and one or two guys who can contribute situationally. The fact that the White Sox happen to be hiding some of the worst players in the league behind that fence in left field doesn't affect the quality of the group as much as you would think. It's just kind of embarrassing.

You have to agree that the White Sox have gotten that from this year's crop of backstops. Then Carlton Fisk established that being a White Sox catcher could be an avenue to getting the payday you coveted and deserved in your 20's, even if you're not still playing quite as good.

I was talked out of making the cover pitcher for this article a "naughty teacher" and going on all about how I was a strict grader but could be convinced into being more lenient, but I guess the uncomfortable sexualization of the relationship between devoted fan and athlete will wait for some other time.
