Talking of Gram Parsons.......
2008-06-04 22:19:00 I first heard of him when I bought and was absolutely bowled over by Elvis Costello's album 'Almost Blue'. Elvis recorded it in Nashville, I think, with some local musicians added to the Attractions. Every track on the album was a country cover and the LP cover carried a sticker which famously said: "WARNING: This album contains country & western music and may cause offence to narrow minded listeners." The most memorable track, for me, was Gram's immortal 'Hot Burrito #1' (sensibly renamed 'I'm Your Toy' - never was a sublime song more ridiculously titled). When I finally caught up with Gram's own version with, of course, the Flying Burrito Brothers, I had to accept that the original was better, if only for the heartbreaking cracking of his voice at crucial stages, but Elvis gives him a run for his money. More of Gram perhaps when my son posts his own take on this seminal artist - and more of Emmylou when the new album is finally released. It's been delayed but I've ...
Gram Parsons, 'Long Black Limousine': Free MP3 of the Day
2008-04-08 00:39:00 When Gram Parsons first started recording in the 1960s, country was anything but 'hip.' But this Georgia boy's love for the music was genuine, and his laid-back 'cosmic' take on old-school standards opened a new generation's eyes and ears (and gave inspiration to bands like the Stones, the Eagles, and Uncle Tupelo). This vault release showcases previously unreleased live recordings from Gram's band the Flying Burrito Brothers in '69.[Download free MP3 now]Tech Special One

Gram Parsons- Live Archive, Vol. 1
2007-11-18 11:02:00 At the time of this incredible two-disc set's release in 2007, the Gram Parsons rarities well had been wrung so dry that Amoeba Records co-founder Dave Pinz had to nose around another band's vaults (the notoriously deep archives of the Grateful Dead) for these Flying Burrito Brothers tapes. The material--recorded by Bear Stanley, the Grateful Dead's legendary live engineer--comprises two honky tonk-heavy sets from April 4, 1969 and April 6, 1969, when the Brothers opened for the Dead at San Francisco's Avalon Ballroom. While the Parsons-era Burritos were never the tightest live band, Archives, Vol.1 captures the one short era during which everyone in the band was together, getting along, and feeling great about the music they had discovered. You can hear it in the tracks: Chris Hillman's delicate harmony on "Dark End of the Street," Sneaky Pete Kleinow's pedal steel pyrotechnics on Waylon Jennings's "Sweet Mental Revenge," and Parsons's lovely tenor on a devastating version o...

Gram Parsons - Another Side Of This Life: Lost Recordings 19
2006-12-12 10:44:01 These home recordings from 1965-66 (the sound quality is surprisingly good) are, essentially, the aural baby pictures of the artist as a young man. The Gram Parsons on display here has very little in common with the country rock titan he’d become a mere two years later. At this stage, he was a conventional (if [...] |
